David Carr goes off on a teammate who calls him 'cute' and no one calls him on what's either just skirting the edge of homophobia or is a not-so-subtle indictment of us? What's wrong with this picture? rolleyes.gif

From looking at the article I took the whole thing as nothing but some teammates joking around with each other. There's nothing to indicate that Carr was really angry or "went off" on anyone.

Why would he say that he was going to slap the other guy?

The way that the article read, he came off as a jerk. So the guy said that he was handsome and cute. Just laugh it off, and say something like, "Compared to you, anybody is cute. Or that joke: if my dog had a face like yours, I would shave its ass and teach it to walk backwards."

I don't know. His cuteness went down some, like Jeremy Bloom.

We had this on Jock Talk yesterday:

David Carr Is Cute: Houston Texans quarterback David Carr came to training camp with a new haircut, after letting his locks grow long last season. See before and after photos. Guard Zach Wiegert told Carr he looked like a "European supermodel," according to the Houston Chronicle.

Center Steve McKinney seemed to upset his quarterback when he called him cute. “I said he looked cute," McKinney said. "He didn't like that comment, so I said, 'Let me rephrase it: You look handsome.' " Carr also didn’t like that, and told the Chronicle: "I told him I'd slap him if he said that again." Oooh, how butch! McKinney wouldn’t give it up, saying: "He's just real sensitive about the way he looks. If somebody told me I was cute, I'd take it as a compliment."

Carr, who goes out of his way to praise the Lord and mention his wife in almost every interview I’ve seen of him, fingered the latter for his new look. "My wife (Melody) wanted me to cut it," said Carr. "It's kind of what I've had my whole life, so I'm used to it. I feel like I've lost 10 pounds."

Carr's apparent inability to just laugh off his teammates' compliments struck me as homophobic too. Although he didn't make any direct anti-gay slurs, I think he should be put on the Watch List as he is getting close to earning a point on the Rocker Scale!

Maybe he's not smart enough to say something like that. So he joked and said "I'm going to slap you." You'd have to see a videoclip to see and hear the whole tone of the conversation with the reporters -- how his face looked, the tone of his voice, etc.

Maybe this is telling -- he said "I'm going to slap you," not "I'll kick your ass!" Slapping someone instead of punching them is kind of gay, dontcha think? tongue.gif

These kind of situations always make me wonder. With the huge dollars in play one has to assume that star athletes' agents (or more likely their staffs) keep a close eye on all media regarding their clients, including the internet and Outsports.

Attention from the lucrative gay community is a good thing for them, up to a point.

I can imagine an agent saying:

"Dave, our research data says that the gay market's response to you has transitioned from admiration/attraction to speculation. Let's try to knock it back a peg. We'll keep feeding the gays some body shots to keep 'em interested but let's do something to let the straight boys in Texas stay comfortable. My people with get back to you with a couple comments we can leak that should even things out a bit. You the Man Dave!"

Biblically driven homophobe. I can't stand these closet phobes who hide their hatred untill something like this comes out and BAM they go off.

They sit in church and agree on how sinfull gay people are and how "marrige = one man one woman". Vote Bush! They try to act like they hate the sin, not the person but that's b.s. It never works and crap like this happens.

We have entered an interesting time, where SOME people lie about being homophobic. I guess that's better than the out-right hatred of the past, but in some ways the silence is worse. It's like 60+ percent of the population still does not think we should be allowed to get married, so in my mind the homophobia is still there, even it it's hidden.

If David Carr is trying to butch it up using phrases like "I'm going to slap you" aren't going to help. I guess it is his wife who bitch slaps him at home since he does whatever she says. His center McKinney seems more comfortable with his sexual identity than he is. I wonder what David thinks of now when he places his hands under his center's butt to get the ball.

Nothin a shotgun offense wouldn't fix

About Carr, I never understood his hype, and thought he was overrated comin out of college.

The words mountain and molehill come to mind here.

I've known lots of guys, staright and gay, who didn't like to be called "cute". And since we weren't there, maybe Carr said it dripping with sarcasm.

Yeah... cute and handsome are two words that I despise. I'd rather just "look good." I think some folks read way too much into things people do and/or say.

I also don't understand the seemingly jab at Carr for "praising the Lord." I admire folks who are so deep in their faith. What does that have to do with cutting his hair??

I definitely will give Carr a pass here. It might simply be the way he expresses his Humbleness(?) Humblibility? Humbleishness?

I used to hate being called cute or handsome too...Now I pay people so I can hear it at least once in awhile. tongue.gif
