Hey not fair! - the Mets just played the Brewers -- winning two of three -- a shot in the arm for any team!

How are the Mets relevant to this thread? They don't have the most obnoxious fans in North America!

The Flushingites were fully expected them to be mediocre this year (and they *may* rise to that level)... I do feel vindicated for calling for Steve Phillips' head last fall -- CLEARLY Valentine was the Metsies' problem, right?
Anyway, I hope the A's get to vanquish the Yanks in 5 months and inaugurate the New Dark Age in the Bronx, rightfully and delightfully. With Ted Lilly pitching the clincher.

Oh, my, looks like I hit a nerve. There, there, I understand, Bill. My guess is that you've been predicting a "Dark Age" since 1996. You've been waiting a while, but I think you're going to have to continue to wait. Luckily, if inept baseball is your preference there's plenty of that available at Shea Stadium.

Sorry I missed it. Just like the Martinez-Clemens classic duel back in aught-zero, Roger just can't manage to maintain against the best pitchers in baseball.

Cy Old indeed. (ESPN headline:
Two Greats, One Future)
The Red Sox don't see the A's until August, hope we might have a Zito-Pedro battle to look forward to this year. Pedro, btw, has got his mojo back. It was a joy to watch him pitch a complete 5 hit, 1 run game on Saturday against the Twins. Way to keep the bullpen from blowing the lead! Too bad he couldn't work Friday and Sunday, too...

fellas its thefirst series of the year that they lost. cause for great concern. clemens pitched fine, one run was unearned, and the yanks didnt capitalize on many opportunities. see ya in october boys.
Okay, I've decided to behave in a respectable manner this time! The Yankees will obviously be contenders throughout the year, there's no doubt about that. but I think other teams in the American League have just as much of a chance at the WS as the Yanks do. Take the AL West for instance; The Yanks are not dominating the best teams in that division, nor have they done so in recent years. Bill W., I see your point about obnoxious Yankee fans; Did you see any A's or M's fans gloating when Zito and Meche shut out the Yanks?? I realize that we have more mild-mannered NYY fans on this board, but you have to admit, that's not the case most of the time. Also, Steinbrenner seems to buy any player who does damage to his team, just so they remain champions for the next 400 years. I think that's what creates so many Yankee haters.

The Yankees have faced their first mild slump of the season (5-5 in the last 10 games). Coincidentally or not, this happened to occur when the Athletics and the Mariners came to town. Nobody is questioning the talent of either Oakland or Seattle because they have been probably 2 of the best 4 teams in the American League for the past 8 years now. However, the bottom line is that neither team can get it done. Anaheim beat the Yankees last year. Oakland had their shot to get to the World Series, and what happened? They lost to a Minnesota team that was playing over their heads. Seattle won over 116 or 117 games the year before that, and what happened? They got their heads handed to them in the ALCS. If the Yankees were the ONLY team in baseball that spends lots of money to keep a team winning then I could understand. But, the bottom line is that teams like Boston (and in previous years, Baltimore, Texas, and Cleveland--albeit not any more for the Indians) have spent loads of money and cannot get it done. Since 1995, even when the Yankees have lost in occasional years and been completely out of the way, no one (except the Angels last year--barely!) has been able to win in the American League. It's not the Yankees fault that Cleveland lost to Atlanta in 1995 or Florida in 1997. It's not the Yankees fault that Seattle and Oakland crumble every post season. It is not the Yankees fault that Boston is the most inept baseball franchise (with the exception of maybe the Mets) in history. I will give Oakland their due as a result of their successful history. But let's face it... They haven't won a World Series in 14 years. So, when people whine about their teams--you know these poor, poor guys with the sparkling new stadiums (Seattle? Cleveland? Houston? Baltimore?), it is funny to a Yankee fan. When someone sees Alex Rodriguez get paid 25 million a year when Texas has consistenty failed, it is funny to a Yankee fan. And, of course, when we see teams like Boston and the Mets (neither whom are hurting for money last time I checked) emulate every move the Yankees make and still fall apart, it is funny to a Yankee fan. The only way to get a Yankee fan's respect is to win. Anaheim did it! Where has Seattle been? They've had since 1976 to do something!

All these teams need to clam the f**k up. My favorite quote was the Minnesota player quote b4 the Yanks/Minny series, when asked why the Yanks dominate Minny like they do, something to the effect of "Last I recall, the Yanks went home earlier than we did last year..." And where did that get ya? Losing to Anaheim.
See, all these teams look at the past and what they've "done"...the Yanks look to the future and what they're "gonna do."
"Cy Young vs. Cy Old"...Yeh right...Clemens didn't lose the game (and I'm not a Clemens fan), Yankee base-running blunders lost the game. Let's not sit here and act like Oakland completely wrecked the Yanks this weekend. Dominance is more than taking a series in May.

You're right, Catcher... And as fine as the Yankee teams were during their '96-00 run, they also had a fair amount of *luck* in winning all those short series. (discreetly avoids mentioning the phantom HR against the Orioles, or the TV-mandated twilight sun in Terrence Long's eyes) ... '98 was really the only year they crushed everyone in sight.
That's why I chuckled at Steinbrenner's determination to "fix" his team after the early exit last year... As if he could ensure they'd outplaying another good team in one 3-of-5 series! Oh, I forgot, they should ALWAYS win cuz they have more "heart" and "Yankee magic"... *gags*
