His actions lately: knocking over coolers and breaking a bone in his pinky finger and missing a start, and now
shoving cameramen, sending one to the hospital.
He's 40 years old. Isn't it about time he acted his age? No wonder the Rangers have collapsed.

How many of these "goes nuts" threads are we going to have? Elton John goes nuts. Tom Cruise goes nuts. Kenny Rogers goes nuts. Maybe we need to consolidate it like tge "People who should be shot" thread and have a "Celebrities going nuts" thread.

The "Elton John goes nuts" was sort of my inspiration. wink Really, I think that thread should be re-titled. It's now about his concert here on the 4th of July. After all, if the "Phillies 2005: Impending Disaster?" thread could be changed even though that disaster is clearly still impending... wink
Any thoughts on if MLB will suspend Kenny Rogers and if so, for how long? If I were in charge he'd get at least two weeks, to set an example for other morons of his ilk.

Kenny Rogers broke his finger on Jun. 17 after he was roughed up in a game. The Texas Rangers did not release this information until Jun. 27 or 28 (not in enough time for me to bench him on my active fantasy league roster  ). Why do ball clubs wait so long to report minor injuries like this so early in the pennant race? Bad publicity?

In addition to the (probable) suspension from baseball, Kenny Rogers could be facing criminal charges, as one of the cameramen involved, Larry Rodriquez, filed a complaint with the police. Rogers could be charged with assault. Rangers' owner Tom Hicks said the organization will issue an "official statement" on the incident today.

So what is Kenny so upset about anyway? Hmmmmm... could he be hiding some deep dark secret about his sexuality? Does he have DSB?

Does he have issues at home? Did he just break up with someone he cares a lot about?
When people have anger outbursts like this there is something big brewing just under the surface like a big zit that needs to be popped!
Okay, enough of the psychology. I will crawl back under my desk with George Costanza...

The issues begin first with his contract status, which was completely up in the air before this incident.
But from what I understand, he is getting completely destroyed in the Metroplex press/radio after the broken hand/water cooler punch.
The amazing thing about this whole incident is that when the Pacers went into the stands after having something actually thrown at them, this board destroyed them. But now, when a player who was unprevoked, goes after a cameramen who was simply doing what he does 82 times a year, and physically attacks a man, there's barely a ripple.
The punishment will be light... 10 games? ...to a pitcher who pitches every 5 days... MLB wants a pennant race in the West so desperately. Hypocrisy.

While it in no way condones what Rogers did, his actions didn't occur in the middle of a game with a building full of people in the seats and didn't cause a riot to break out.

"Rogers suspended 20 games, fined $50K
Story :Associated Press
Texas pitcher Kenny Rogers was suspended for 20 games and fined $50,000 by Major League Baseball on Friday for an outburst that sent a television cameraman to the hospital and prompted a police investigation.
The players' union filed an appeal on behalf of Rogers. "Mr. Rogers' behavior was unprofessional, unwarranted and completely unacceptable," commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement. "Major League Baseball is a social institution and all of us in the game have an important responsibility to act with reason and good judgment."
Rogers shoved two cameramen before Wednesday's game against the Los Angeles Angels in a tirade that included throwing a camera to the ground, kicking it and threatening to break more. The incident was captured on videotape and led to KDFW cameraman Larry Rodriguez being treated at a hospital.
"While I recognize the relationship between players and members of the media may sometimes be difficult, there is no circumstance in which a player may settle a difference of opinion or a dispute through physical means," Selig said. "Media coverage is important to the game and we in baseball are obligated to treat members of the media with respect and civility."
Rodriguez filed an assault report, and Arlington police spokeswoman Christy Gilfour said the case was being investigated as a misdemeanor assault. Rogers hadn't been interviewed by investigators and no charges had been filed Thursday.
Rogers was in Seattle with the Rangers for a weekend series. He was scheduled to pitch Sunday."

Has there ever been a situation where the Players Association did
not appeal? Seriously, I can't ever recall one. They'd appeal disciplinary action if Rogers went out and shot a dozen people on the field in broad daylight.

Let's see if he goes to the All-Star game. The consensus is it would be a major distraction if he showed up. I wonder if Selig has the guts to tell him not to show up, or to hold the appeal quickly enough so that his suspension starts before the All-Star break?
Adam
Jul 7 2005, 09:27 AM
I wonder whether Rogers would be a distraction with fans--the paying customers--or if he'd be a distractionm merely to media members. Sportstalk radio and others in the sports press seem to be making a lot more of this than regular fans.
~Adam
Why can't the appeal be held quickly? The Players Association appealed several days ago. Does it take that long for an MLB official to fly to Texas or wherever the Rangers are playing to hear an appeal? Ridiculous.
Joe in Philly
Jul 7 2005, 06:33 PM
Generally it seems it's held when a player's team is in New York, so it can be done at the league offices. Now, if a team doesn't have a trip to NYC scheduled the rest of the season I assume they do a phone conference or something...but I'm just guessing.
Someone here's gotta know this. I could have sworn that MLB officials have flown to a player's city to hear appeals. I know it happened with a Cubs player a year or so ago.

Wells added: \"I probably would have done the same thing.\"

The reporters were doing what they do every single day of their professional lives. Kenny Rogers was doing what he has done every single day of his professional life. As far as I can tell, the reporters were where they usually were. And he decided he didn't want his picture taken.
So, let me get this straight. The cameramen "raped" Kenny Rogers. I'm sure Barry Bonds is sick of being talked about in columns. If they keep writing about him anyway, does he have the right to go bonk the columnists on the head?
I've seen Kenny's picture more in the last few weeks than I have in the previous ten years. I know a guy who, for one reason or another, really doesn't like his picture taken. But he works in a position where no one will ever take his picture. Maybe Kenny should look into that.

\"People are going to do whatever they are going to do,\" Rogers told the newspaper Sunday. \"I'm going because I was voted in by the players and I earned it. I want the players to know their vote means a lot to me. I know how the players feel and if I thought it would benefit them if I didn't go, I wouldn't go.\"
---
\"I know that I belong there without a doubt,\" he said. \"Even though there's other opinions out there, I really don't give them much weight. But players put me in there. They voted me in there, so I know it's one thing I deserve without a doubt, and that has a lot of weight.\"
Rogers, speaking to a group of reporters after a game for the first time this season, also said he didn't want to be a distraction to the game and the other players there.
In his first start at home since his videotaped tirade June 29, Rogers was greeted by a mostly supportive response from Rangers fans. Cheers overwhelmed an audible chorus of boos.
He doesn't want to be a distraction so he's going to show up. Yeah, that'll work.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Texas Rangers pitcher Kenny Rogers had another run-in with a cameraman Monday when he turned himself in on misdemeanor assault charges stemming from an earlier tirade against two cameramen.
The three-time All-Star, who is appealing a 20-game suspension and $50,000 fine, was released after posting $1,500 bond. Rogers jawed at a cameraman for Dallas-Fort Worth television station WFAA as he was booked into the county jail. Just as with the incident that led to the charges, the exchange was caught on tape.
WFAA reported on its Web site Monday that photographer Mike Zukerman was videotaping the procedure when Rogers turned to him and said, \"You're getting really close; you know that? Do you hear me?\"
A few seconds later, Rogers again turned to the camera, saying, \"You must be pretty proud of yourself, too.\"
After Zukerman replied, \"It's just my job, Kenny,\" Rogers responded: \"Yeah. Your job. That's just your excuse.\"

Saw it on SportsCenter. After Rogers told the cameraman that he was pretty close, the camerman zoomed in for an extreme close-up on Rogers' face. That seemed like the camerman was trying to incite something.

Rogers clearly has snapped. I'm not sure I necessarily buy the "it's just my job" defense, however. If your job requires you to do things that are unkind, intrusive or worse yet outright disreputable or dishonest, then you should find another line of work or accept the fact that it's not the job, it's you.

Instead of saying "It's my job.", it probably would have been more accurate for the reporter to say "It's what my editors want!".

Am I missing something here? The cameraman was at a public legal proceeding, and he is legally entitled to be there. I tune into the TV every night and see people who have been charged with all sorts of crimes being photographed at these types of proceedings. Is Rogers so special that he deserves preferential treatment?
Just because the cameraman zoomed in on Rogers (as Adam pointed out), doesn't mean he was intrusive to Roger's personal space - Hence the "zoom" feature on the camera. He probably didn't step an inch closer to Rogers.
Kenny should thank the world he doesn't pitch in New York right now. We all saw how he personally melted as a player when he did pitch for the Yankees. Can you imagine how bad he'd be grilled right now if this same incident happened in the media center of the world?

Jul 19 2005, 04:28 PM
I saw the exchange too and I agree that the cameraman wasn't attempting to incite anything or get too close, Rogers was just being a pampered sports jerk, I mean, jock.
The cameraman wasn't acting like a paparazzi jumping out of the bush or getting in his face. He was just standing in the same area as Rogers filming Rogers standing in line. Rogers said "you're getting kind of close" when the cameraman was clearly at least two feet away. So instead of "getting in his face" the cameraman used his zoom lens feature, which Rogers wouldn't even know was happening unless he has a TV monitor in his head.
You'd think with Rogers' history with cameramen and "his personal space" that he'd learn to be a little more cool about the whole situation instead of coming off as some paranoid dude.

Kenny Rogers loses his appeal. His suspension is supposed to begin tonight. There's been talk that the union would file a grievance because both the original suspension and appeal decisions came from Bud Selig. We shall see.

If Kenny Rogers (who really hasn't been pitching that well since this whole incident happened) wouldn't have appealed, his suspension would be over by now. Instead, his sinking Rangers are now going to have to do without him for most of August.

When he was being fingerprinted, a news camera was shooting it as it happened (why the police allowed this is a different story) and Rogers started snarling and mouthing off at the cameraman. How do arbitrators get assigned in these cases? The one who decided this one is the same one who denied Rafael Palmiero's appeal...and yet I think he should never be allowed to be involved in a sports case again.
