Well the best NFL pregame show, ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown, has just been scratched from my list of must see TV. Rush Limbaugh has joined the show.

From ESPN.com:

QUOTE
\"Football is like life and I know life,\" Limbaugh said in a statement. \"I am a big fan of the NFL and now I get to do what every football fan would love to do. I get to take my observations from the living room couch to the ESPN studios and talk football with the best journalists and players in the business.\"

Limbaugh, who will appear either on the show's Bristol, Conn., set or via satellite, will provide a weekly opinion piece on an aspect of the NFL making news that week, and participate in impromptu exchanges with the analysts and challenging their opinions on various issues. Limbaugh will be allotted three challenge opportunities to use at his discretion during the show.

\"Rush is a great communicator and a fan's fan,\" said Mark Shapiro, ESPN's executive vice president of programming and production. \"His acute sense of what's on the minds of his listeners combined with his ability to entertain and serve as a lightning rod for lively discussion makes him the perfect fit for this new role.

\"We want to give fans a voice, and Rush is the person who can do it.\"

I'm happy. I can't imagine football analysis from a lib. "We just saw #69, Joe Blowski, sack quarterback Billy Bobb, ending the Cockroaches' march down the field. Dan, did Blowski gain approval from the UN before he unleashed that preemptive strike? What can we do to end this cycle of violence?"
PhillyFan
Well William... Blowski... polish name and white, he would be taking a job away from a hard working black man... only to have a chance to become a coach, when no black man has a chance to coach in the ever-so-racist coaching ranks. You know where ray rhodes deserves a chance to coach because he's black... rather than being fired cause he's a F'in idiot... who proved he cant coach to save his life.

Further more, no sacks should be allowed in the NFL as someone might be hurt. and every game should end in a tie, so one has their feelings hurt. You know we have to be fair to the teams like say... the cards who can only win 2 games a year... we could take away 4 of the iggle victories and give it to them... I mean who the hell are they to try and better themselves.. shame on them...

But instead, with Rush, we'll get fair and honest reporting... someone who is not afraid to tell it like it is. An actual football FAN.

Then after that , they can flip over to irvin while he bangs some skanky hooker and sniffs some coke. The cowboys fans will love that!

QUOTE
Don’t encourage homosexuality by teaching it in grade school
Think of what the NYC school system was trying to teach first-graders without any objection from the ACLU. One of the books recommended, Heather Has Two Mommies, describes how two lesbians become mommies. (One of them was artificially inseminated by a “special doctor.”) Another book was Daddy’s Roommate, which pictures Daddy and his male roommate in bed together. A third was Gloria Goes to Gay Pride. In the first grade! Can anyone tell me with a straight face that such teaching is not for the express purpose of indoctrinating students with the false notion that homosexuality is as normal as heterosexuality? Surely no one can argue that it is healthy to encourage such a lifestyle. Even if you reject the moral objections to this lifestyle, you cannot honestly deny the overwhelming evidence that homosexual behavior statistically reduces one’s life span. And, if kids are learning about homosexuality in first grade, what do you suppose they are learning in high school?

As Joe in Philly pointed out, Dennis Miller was also suppossed to have been a huge football fan. Him and Berman and Irvin on the same show means I have to choose one of the other shows.

Let's see, CBS has Deion Sanders and then Marcus Allen sings on the Christmas show, so that's out.

FOX has Terry "1-800-COLLECT" Bradshaw along with Jimmie Johnson. No thanks. Even the thought of drooling over Howie Long for an hour doesn't tip the scales.

Guess I'll have to forget about the pregame shows! frown
PhillyFan
I think maybe Irvin is on the monday countown... i dont know.

Dennis miller was witty and all, but the problem was... most people had no clue what the hell he was talking about. Rush is more plain spoken, he will be a hit, just watch. Anyway, it sounds like he's just doing a bit on the show... it's not like he's gonna be sitting next to everyone doing the breakdown of the game...

Ditto. Somehow, he'll blame the Democrats for his team losing a game. And if the Republicans were playing, they would win all the time.

I know that I am taking a risk & may get an in-depth explanation(if not an earfull from both PhillyFan & William1865), but can someone explain to me why some posters on here seem to turn the most simple, non-threatening thread into a black/white, liberal/conservative hostile one. Hey Guys,
Lets be honest, the only reason Rush will be on is because he can draw more viewers, over 15 million listeners is the only reason hes going to be on there. I am a staunch republican, always have been and always will be,however his show sucks and he will suck as an analyst. Dont get me wrong,I wish I had the numbers he does, but hes nothing more than an innovative sell-out,and his sports background consists of being a salesman for the KC Royals, that doesnt justify him being on ESPN sunday mornings,I think that if they really cared about improving their product they could have done a lot better than that.

Same here, but I love Howie -- so I'll keep the mute on and just watch!

I like Wanda Sykes (but can't remember which show she's on). She did this great piece up at Lambeau last year where she ended up talking with a woman in the crowd who was spouting the virtues of living in Green Bay: "we're a wonderful culturally diverse community ..."

Wanda looked up into the surrounding stands -- saw a sea of white people, turned to the camera and said "Yeah, I can see that ..." wink

Wanda Sykes is on HBO's Inside the NFL, their weekly wrapup show that airs Thursdays. She's doen soem frickin' hilarious bits. I think she also does some stuff for FOX's pregame show, but as I was always watching ESPN's I can't say for sure.

I didn't think Limbaugh fit in very well last night -- maybe there's no chemistry yet between him and the others (actually I don't think I'd wanna develop chemistry with some of those guys, come to think of it!) -- and his persona seemed oddly flat.

I also found it odd that ESPN had him sitting way off to the side -- couldn't they have had him join the panel at their table for his commentary? It was like they had him in quarantine!

We'll see how he does on Sunday.

Okay not to be mean but is Michael Irvin retarded or what? This used to be my favorite pregame show and its now become almost unwatchable. Tom Jackson, Steve Young, Chris Mortensen and the field reporters are still top notch, but Boomer is just insufferable, English isn't even Irvin's third language let alone his first and Rush Limbaugh just doesn't fit it at all so far.
Joe in Philly
What a surprise: Rush has put his foot into his big fat mouth. On Sunday's program he said that the media has overrated Donovan McNabb because he's black!

QUOTE
\"I think the sum total of what you're all saying is that Donovan McNabb is regressing, he's going backwards. And...I'm sorry to say this, I don't think he's been that good from the get-go.

\"I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. I think the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. They're interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well; I think there is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of his team that he really didn't deserve.

WOW i finally get to bash rushy...

I really think that if the NFL were trying to pump up black coaches or black qb's... Ray Rhodes and Kordell would be in the hall of fame.

This is easily put to rest with 2 examples... baltimore's SB year and Tampa's SB year. Good D's and a crappy QB who doesnt make mistakes... nuff said. OH, both were white.

Rush doesnt know what he's talking about on this issue because he didnt see that team turn around the minute dmac went in at QB. Fact is, they became good when he started playing.

That has nothing to do with him being red, white, or purple.... I've never thought of him as a "black" QB. That's never even crossed my mind. Dmac gets media attention because he's a likeable guy. Look at Fatt Sapp, no one wants him on commercials cause he's a big fat idiot, and not likeable... Has nothing to with him being black, just and idiot. Dmac is just an all around good guy in a league that promotes them.
la_meatman
Although I don't like Rush on ESPN...I do agree that McNabb is product of being over-hyped, and part of that is the socially correct, caucasion americans like myself DO WANT TO SEE successful, black, superstar QB's in the NFL. We do want to see succesful black head coaches.

ON the subject of McNabb..the eagles showed his true value last year, by going undefeated, and making it to the championship game with a THIRD string, pocket passing QB.

The first two games showed that McNabb is indeed, NOT a superstar. Superstars carry there teams thru difficult stretches. He did not display any of the traits that players given the "superstar" label possess.

Every few years the media hypes up the "running QB"...but the fact still remains, they may have a couple of decent seasons, but they never survive, until they learn to stay in the pocket. The only potential HOF QB in the past 30 years known for his running is Steve Young...who was BENCHED until he learned how to stay in the pocket. The exciting, running QB's make for great press...they just don't translate into Super Bowl Champions, which is the true mark of ones greatness.

They didn't go undefeated. They lost the regular season finale. And it doesn't diminish McNabb that the team won without him. It shows that the rest of the team had enough talent and the coaches called the right plays. Both of those elements were missing in the first two games this season. McNabb played poorly in both games but with the injuries, lack of depth and poor coaching, God Almighty wouldn't have won those two games.
la_meatman
Without turning this into another Philly bashing thread...the point was Rush stating that the media wants a black QB superstar, and he doesn't see dmac fitting that bill.

Neither do I.

Running QB's in the NFL provide a couple good years, then become also-rans. History teaches us this. Of all the people that should have learned that lesson, would be the philly fans. Surely you remember all the hoopla over Randall Cunningham, how he was gonna change the way the NFL would be. The running quarterback is nothing more than a quick fix, until teams figure out the containment, then they are dead. This isn't "old" news..it goes back to the mid'70's when the NFL fell in love with Bobby Douglass.

Now I jumped back off topic again. I agree with Rush that Dmac got too much of the credit for PHilly's success. I do beleive the media wants a "superstar" black QB to emerge. The NFL and the media want a BLACK head coach to win a Super Bowl, to shed the image (rather correctly or wrongly) of racism within the head coaching fraternity.

I'm not a Rush fan...and hate seeing him looking so frail, isolated away. Yet he was right on the mark with his statement about Dmac. Only time will tell about its accuracy.
PhillyFan
If i remember correctly... that 4-1 record... the 4 wins were against bad teams, and the one loss was against the Giants....

I dunno dude, i've never ever read anything on dmac from the philly press that EVER pumped him up as simply a "black QB"...

OH, and Young AND Elway were both running qb's, they just happened to be white... AND they won SB's.. doesnt that throw your running qb theory out the door?

The won super bowls AFTER they learned what a pocket is. The mentality of both of them, in the latter part of their careers was to PASS, not run.

To show you what a moronic statement that was. Steve Young, for his first 6 NFL seasons, average ONE run per 3.7 rushing attempts. In his championship years, that changed to 1/6.43.

Elway averaged a whopping 13 yards per game for his career. How is that a "running" qb? Career rushing for Elway=3407 over a 17 year career.
Mcnabb=2040 in 4 years. His run/pass ratio is 1/4.92

Stats speak alot LOUDER than hometown allegiance.
Look at Randall Cunninghams stats...compare the two. Nearly identical in every way to Mcnabbs.
Kenny
Uh oh! PF might have met his statman match!
mdphl
Rush Limbaugh's comments about McNabb were obviously carefully designed by Limbaugh to create controversy. The guy is a master circus performer from his "right wing rantings" (there is considerable speculation that the guy is actually a lib) to his recovery from deafness (speculation is that he never really was deaf).

The guy is a loon. He sucks as a sports commentator.
Joe in Philly
Carefully orchestrated? Well, he IS coming to town. Coincidence???

QUOTE
On ESPN Sunday morning, Rush Limbaugh opened his mouth and in one fell swoop attacked Donovan McNabb's ability, indicted the media and offended any person who has evolved beyond caveman.

Tomorrow he'll be in Philadelphia to give a keynote address at the 3-day National Association of Broadcasters radio convention, known as The NAB Radio Show. Hmm...

Cynics will say Limbaugh is no dummy. What better way to drum up interest in your talk than to attack the sacred cow of the city you're visiting - and everyone knows Philadelphia's holy Holstein is its football team.

Whether or not you believe he's that calculated, Limbaugh tomorrow will stroll into the center of the maelstrom he created by saying McNabb, the Eagles' quarterback, gets more credit than he deserves because he's black.

Limbaugh will kick off the day at the Pennsylvania
Convention Center ballroom at 9 a.m.; he will deliver the Radio Show's keynote speech. (For more info, go to www.nab.org/conventions/
or call 800-342-2460.)

Later he will be on the dais at the Union League, one of a number of speakers on hand for a private luncheon sponsored by WPHT (1210-AM) for folks in the business.

Limbaugh was not asked to attend Eagles practice.

Meanwhile, ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz was asked yesterday whether the network had any reaction to the furor raised by Limabugh's comments. He said Limbaugh and his fellow analysts were engaged in a \"sports and media discussion, not a political discussion\" on the subject of McNabb. He said Limbaugh's target was the media, and Limbaugh did not criticize McNabb on racial grounds.
mdphl
JIP -- Limbaugh trying to hype an event --- I can't believe the guy would do something like that! wink
ballplayer3
I am not sure about Young but the reason Elway won a superbowl was Terrell Davis.. if Donovan ever had a really good running back.. and Duce Staley is not it.. he would win a super bowl..without Terrel Davis..John Elway is.. Donovan McNabb..except he is white. And i do thinik the statement Rush made was racist.. he is no better than Al Campanis in my book
PhillyFan
I guess i need to do some stat research...

However, Elway was a scrambler and not a pocket passer. ie when things broke down he moved around. At that point, he would throw or run the ball.

Scrambling around for 30 seconds then throwing a pass... makes you just as mobile as dmac or randall... you just dont get the running stats. No one doubts elway was a scrambler. Same with Young.

The only thing randall and dmac have in common are the fact they are black.. that is all. As far as performance goes... has randall ever won a playoff game? Dmac is in his 5th year i think, and he's already 4-3 n the playoffs. Much like Elway was at this point of the career.

At the end of the day.. it comes down to the rest of the team.
