Full Version: Parcells. . .just an inflated super ego???

Even with the media telling us to expect Parcells to be announced tomorrow as the Cowboys next coach, I somehow don't believe it. All of us down here in Tampa area have heard this story before from this aging has been. He stood us up at the alter a year ago (with a signed contract none the less) and he's likely to do the same to Dallas. I get the strong feeling that he just likes to get his name out there once in a while to reinforce his self worth.

Regardless, he's not Gawd and the cowboys turnaround won't be a quick one or two year project I feel. Sure he had some success several years ago. . . but the jury is way out insofar as what he'll do IF he ever does commit and coach.

Overall, though, I can't think of a better city and team for him and his ego to go to. . . he'll fit right in with Jones and company!!!

"He stood us up at the alter a year ago"

Great line BigBucBoy. Being a Giants fan, I've had the same feelings about Parcells for years. And I'm sure Jets fans and Patriots fans are in the same boat with us. He loves to take over teams at rock bottom build them up into winners and then bolt out of town like the Lone Ranger. I heard someone mention his name in the same breath as Vince Lombardi. I don't think Lombardi was this type of coach was he? Parcells has no loyalty to any organization. He just likes for people to fall in love with him. What sickens me is now having to face Parcells twice a year.

I'm happy that he helped get us two Super Bowl wins but as far as I'm concerned he has no memorable affiliation with my team anymore.

I hope Jerry Jones drives him batty.

Even with the open roof, Jerry Jones' and Big Tuna's swollen heads can't fit together for long in Cowboy Stadium.

Lisa Marie's next marriage will last longer than this one.

I have been watching this in the media and am very skeptical that Parcells will be the next Cowboys coach. With his huge ego and Jerry Jones and his son, Stephen being involved in Operations, I don't see Parcells humbing himself to the position of coach with Jerry pacing up and down the sidelines during final minutes of a game telling Parcells what to do. I see this relationship being more volatile than the Jerry Jones/Jimmy Johnson affair.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Parcells is scheduled to fly to Dallas on Thursday.

Although most of the information in the article is according to "sources close to Mr. Jones and Mr. Parcells", it seems to indicate a $16 -$18 Million deal is in the works, and the Tampa Bay hurdle may be easier to overcome than previously thought...

Parcells set to take over...

As a Pats fan, I have no love loss for the (very) big Tuna, but I have to admit he does a good job turning a team around. There's three big differences tho' between what he did for NY/NE/NJ and what he can do in Dallas.

1. It takes a couple of years. All three of his previous teams went through a year of mediocrity before making the Superbowl. That was okay for teams that had a history of disappointment, but are Dallas fans willing to wait? Especially when they're paying Parcells so much money.

2. His staff. Parcells isn't going to have Bellichek et al to back him up. He used basically the same coaching staff in all of his successes, and now they all have better jobs. They're not likely to rejoin Parcells to take second fiddle.

3. Jerry Jones. Is there ANY chance that these two won't butt heads? And is there ANY chance this isn't going to negatively effect the team? no.

I predict a big bust in Dallas, and much of the lustre shed from Parcell's image.

Completely agreed. I feel Parcells has tarnished his own legacy substantially with the shoddy way he left the Patriots, then the Jets, then essentially reneged on the Bucs.

whenever one of my tuna-loving employees gets a bit too obnoxious, i point out that bill belicek has won a super bowl without parcells, but parcells has never won the big one without belicek. he shuts up quickly.

The deal is done. Parcells is in as next Cowboys coach.

Jerry may be a laughable GM but he knew what to do to get those luxury suites re-leased. Cha-ching.

Can't we have a wait and see attitude. Jones appears to be willing to bend a little in giving Parcell some control over his staff and personel. Surely, Jones has finally heard the yaks about his lack of football knowledge to give someone else (some) control over the operation of the team. Jones knows that Dallas fans won't accept the Cowboys production of the last few years without some sign of progress for future championships or at least winning seasons. As Theo said "luxury suites re-leased. Cha-ching", that's the bottom line, Jones knows corporate Dallas can't sell a losing Cowboys team to their clients without a big name coach and at least an appearance of a future competitive team. The dollars will be going to the Mavs and Stars not the Cowboys 'psudeo Bengals'. The big thing here is Jones is giving someone else control, some control. This is one of the few moves Jones has made during the post Johnson era to make sense.

Quite frankly this is a match made in heaven, or is it hell? Either way, Dallas and Parcells deserve each other. As both a longtime Parcells-hater - the distractions he provided during the 1997 Super Bowl were completely unprofessional - and a believer that Dallas is the most over-hyped team in the league, whether they are winning or not, I can't wait to sit back and watch the sparks fly. Parcells may be able to produce winning football teams, but never for very long, and not without pissing off a huge contingent of fans and players. Even if he produces, Dallas will be the team to root against, given all the animosity Parcells has created, and the number of people who have enjoyed Dallas' decline over the past few years. And if he fails to produce - watch out! Either way, this should be the drama of next season.

Interesting that Parcells gets to face all his former teams next season.

Also, I hear that the Bucs are still looking for compensation from the Cowboys for signing Parcells.

Given Parcells' track record, I can't imagine he'll stay in Dallas for the duration of his contract. I give it three years, at best and then he'll bolt...again, saying he's done with coaching...again. As for him and Jones, Jerry may stay out of things for awhile, but at some point, he's going to start meddling again. And when those two egos clash, look out.

This will last a couple of months, maybe! No way Parcells and Jones are going to click.

As a longtime Cowboy hater I would like nothing better than to see another Dallas coach fail miserably and to see Jones and Parcells engage in a nasty public feud -- BUT after watching the highlights of Thursday's news conference I actually think Jerry (as ruthless and insensitive as he is) was sincere when he expressed his intentions to "do everything in his power to make this relationship work" after realizing all of the mistakes he has made in the past few seasons as Dallas owner....I actually had to catch myself -- for a split second I almost began to feel a sense of compassion for the evil millionaire owner who treated classy Tom Landry like dirt (after 29 years of loyal service) and the coach who obviously has NO sense of loyalty after walking out on THREE teams and heartbreakingly proclaiming to the media and fans that his coaching days were over once and for all.

Well, at least Dallas still will have to play six tough intra-divisional games every season against three up and coming teams....I honestly think the Parcells-Jones relationship WILL probably last the full four seasons of the contract before Bill decides to walk away again -- only this time he will do so WITHOUT leading a team to any postseason success....I look forward to enjoying watching those two egotistical maniacs suffer over these next few seasons -- just another reason to hate the Cowboys -- as Jackie Gleason used to say, "How sweet it is!"

Oh that Parcells is so full of himself. Tampa Bay would have been too boring a team to take over. Tuna needed a challenge. Tuna needed to do something real heroic. Rescue "America's Team".
After three 5-11 seasons Tuna gets to take over a team right where he likes it. At rock bottom. The Buccaneers were just not rock bottom enough for Tuna. It's all about him.

I am a Giants fan. And I too love seeing the Cowboys when they're down. But Bill Parcells becoming head coach of this team is just too surreal.

This may be soap opera in Dallas that'll be even bigger than "Who Shot JR". Sounds like alot of sweet talking is going on with Parcells and Jones but sooner or later one of their egos will surface. BTW does Jerry Jones look terrible or what? The guy looks like he's about 150 years old. Guess that facelift didn't quite workout!
amazin12
Yeh it looks like Jerry Jones took a page out of Michael Jackson's book by going under the knife. Let's just hope he doesn't start dangling babies over balconies.

But with the millions of dollars he has, couldn't Jerry Jones find the right plastic surgeon.

La Tuna, at $4.5 million/year, joins these other high-priced coaches:

Steve Spurrier, Redskins: $5 million
Mike Holmgren, Seahawks: $4.5 million
Mike Shanahan, Broncos: $4.1 million
Mike Martz, Rams: $4 million

Funny, I don't remember seeing a single one of these teams in last week's playoff games!

Parcells hired Detroit Lions' offensive coordinator, Maurice Carthon. There was a comparison in the media between the Dallas offensive productivity and Detroit's, thus quieting the critics of this acquisition.
