So sad! sad.gif I hate that these things happen.

QUOTE
Trevin Dilfer, the 5-year-old son of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Trent Dilfer, died Sunday in California after a 40-day battle with heart disease.

The boy's parents and three sisters were at his bedside at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford University.

\"Trevin was a very brave young boy and we are comforted in knowing that as a child of God he has returned to his maker,'' the family said in a statement. \"We grieve, but not as those without hope.''

The Dilfers thanked supporters and hospital staff while requesting privacy, and a family spokesman said there would be no additional comment. Team president Bob Whitsitt said the organization was \"deeply saddened'' by the news.

Services were pending.

Trent Dilfer played for the Baltimore Ravens when they won the 2000 Super Bowl, joining the Seahawks in August 2001. He missed the second half of last season with a torn Achilles' tendon.

I am curious about this quote from the family: "As a child of God, he has returned to his maker. We grieve, but not as those without hope."

Who exactly are those without hope? Those who don't believe in the same God that the Dilfer family does?

Please don't turn this into some sort of religious debate. A family lost a child. You misinterpreted the family statement. I'm sure they mean that they've not lost hope, unlike many parents who've lost a child.

There are a great many people (I'm thinking
of Kurt Warner, not Trent Dilfer) who try to
get mileage out of people's deaths to advance
their of religious opinions. That may be what
TheOtherFSU was getting at; he will have to
clarify that himself.

(If you don't believe that's possible, then
observe the character assassination on
Madeline Murray O'Hair and her family. For
years, the religious right propagated the lie
that she and her family stole money from
American Atheists, when in fact they have been
murdered. They even coaxed her son, William
J. Murray, a fundamentalist christian, not to
provide a DNA sample to help identify their
remains.)

Dilfer's reasons for saying it were certainly
not self-serving, but let's not pretend it's
always that way. Invocations from the ilk of
Reggie White, Shrub, Christina Aguilera's
"prayer" on her video, etc. definitely are
self-serving.

Pointing out the occasional dishonest motive
is no more anti-religious than criticizing
Ariel Sharon's policies is anti-Semetic. If
not, then Fred Phelps could claim he has a
valid complaint.
