Just heard ESPN nfl analyst Sean Salisbury, who is a former player claim that, in all his years of playing he has "NEVER seen a player put on a cup in the locker room."

If his observation (hmmm, obviously he was looking ) on the cup is as good as his analysis of the Steelers and Jets quarterback dilemmas (Steelers should stick with Stewart only spelling him with a backup, Jets should live or die with Pennington - or whoever - and put Vinnie out to stud) then maybe, just MAYBE, the cup issue is settled.

This Heap is miiiine!

I saw that last night. It just seems implausible to me that they'd go without cups. Too physical a sport.

Sportinlife, what was the context for SS's remarks? It's not the normal thing you'd hear an analyst talk about. Not that I'm complaining, mind you.

Hmmm...Heap....hanging to our left (his right) it would seem. Nice.

I heard him say it too--and I think he was talking about hits on wide receivers etc. saying that they don't wear them because it would slow them down. I took it he implied that others may, but if you were in a speed position you wouldn't.

As was said in another movie, "I feel the need....for speed!"

You might think football players would wear protective plastic cups in their supporters, as do hockey players and baseball catchers, but hardly any do. The only Steeler Freyvogel's seen wear a cup was Justin Strzelczyk, who'd slip one in every time they played the rival Cleveland Browns because, "He'd get kicked quite a bit."

If you ever listen to Salisbury on the "Dan Patrick Show" on radio, he often asks Rob Dibble why right/left/center fielders wear cups. He seems to have something of a fixation on the subject.

The context in which I heard the comment was a back-and-forth between Salisbury and another non-player commentator whose name I forget.

It was one of a number of issues upon which the two had opposing views. One was the quarterback situations I mentioned in my initial post, another was I think running back situations, and the jock or no jock was just another issue.

Salisbury seemed to speak from experience and know "exactly" whereof he spoke, whereas the other guy who insisted that players couldn't possibly not wear cups, was just a sports writer who'd never played pro ball.

I think Salisbury was right on every issue, especially the cup, about which he was surprisingly adamant.
