Full Version: Quincy Carter Released by Cowboys

Incumbent starting QB Quincy Carter will be released by the Cowboys today, according to ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli....either Bill Parcells has a lot more faith in an aging Vinny Testaverde (who did lead his Jets team to the playoffs about 5 years ago) than most other NFL "experts" do or Dallas has a "secret deal" in the works to acquire another QB that has yet to be revealed....I can't imagine that Drew Henson, who hasn't played ANY football in 3 YEARS, would be ready to take over the reins this quickly.

I know that the egocentric duo of Jerry Jones and Parcells are always looking for ways to generate publicity for the 'Boys but this move has apparently caught EVERYONE by surprise.

ESPN has now updated their story both to confirm that Carter has been officially released and to add that the reason is due to Quincy failing a team administered drug test....since it has now been revealed that he was already in the NFL substance abuse program (due to testing positive for an undisclosed illegal substance in the past) it will be interesting to see if any other teams (Dolphins perhaps?) leap to sign the former Georgia Bulldog.

...and the starting quarterback for your Dallas Cowboys...

Vinny Testaverde!

Where have all the loud Cowboy fans gone?

Parcell and Jones in conference now. They are not commenting about the reason but say it was not a difficult decision.

Think I'm suprised because all of the recent press, alot from Qunicy, about how he was ready to be the leader and all.

So, guess now things are unsettled and will be for awhile...not sure what to expect from the team this year now. Sometimes being a fan isn't all roses, but they are still my team!

Well, THAT didnt take long. I guess some folks just can't help taking pleasure from someone else's pain.

The boys will be fine. Quincy was average at best. I'm looking forward to seeing Drew Henson play. Congrads to the Cowboys for releasing him, no player doing drugs should be tolerated....but I bet a lot of them are.

Drew Henson? Yeah, that'll work. rolleyes.gif wink

yeah just like McNabb--can't win the big game.

Yeah, they'll win the division... if the Eagles start Roman Gabriel or Ron Jaworksi at QB, the Redskins start Billy Kilmer or Joe Theisman at QB, and the Giants start Y.A. Tittle at QB.

You are dreaming.

Quincy was never the answer for the Cowboys, but I think they're going to have to pull a rabbit out of their hat soon. Vinny might last one series, but the dude is almost as old as me. I don't think Drew Henson is up to the challenge yet and Tony Romo is next in line. Chad Hutchison back? Ackkk! I don't think so.

Quincy made a stupid mistake and blew it (probably for his entire NFL career). He's damaged goods and wasn't that good in the first place. Good riddance. Maybe he can join the Ricky Williams tour in Asia. frown

Here's the deal - Vinny may start the season as the Cowboy's starter, but if they plan on relying on him all year you might as well throw this season away. He's not mobile. He's lost arm strength to throw the out pass. He was never able to throw the deep ball consistently, and thrived in "dink pass" offenses - - Hey maybe he is a good fit given that the Cowboys acquired a "dink pass" receiver in the off season! biggrin.gif

Seriously, the Cowboys best bet may be via trade, or waiver wire pick-up after camps cut down. You look at teams that the Cowboys have had favorable relationships with in the past, who also may have some seasoned depth at QB that may be expendable and the first teams that come to mind are Oakland (Gannon) and Tampa Bay (Griese). Oakland, with the release of Tim Brown today is clearly signaling a desire to get younger, and with the pick-up of Kerry Collins in the offseason may not bode well for Gannon. Tampa, who likely plans on grooming Chris Simms for the future will likely have to cut Johnson or Griese as camp concludes - neither of those two would likely accept the #3 spot on the depth chart. Just my initial thoughts.

Oh, and one more thing, don't be surprised if the NFLPA is all over the Cowboys for this release and this saga gets really, really drawn out and becomes a major distraction.

While a trade is still a viable option can any team honestly expect to get a quality STARTING QB off the waiver wire (i.e., the equivalent of the NFL scrap heap)?....anyone care to start a pool on how long it will be before Keyshawn starts whining about not having a decent signal caller to "throw him the damn ball" tongue.gif ....and this is before "the mouth" has even played a SINGLE game (regular or exhibition season) for the Pokes.

Me thinks this will be a fun year for all the Cowboy-haters (or, to be more precise, all the Bill Parcells and Jerry Jones haters) with plenty of sound bites and front page headlines yet to come out of Big D.

I've a question about all this. The drug test in question was a team administered one?? Doesn't the players' union forbid that--and require that all drug tests be administered by the league, not individual teams?? Has Gene Upshaw of the Union spoken to this yet? From what I heard of the press conference (admittedly, only bits and pieces,) Jones and Parcells danced around the cause of Carter's release which made me wonder if they're afraid of some kind a legal action.

Oh, and you heard it here first: Troy Aikman will be approached to be the Cowboys' QB. biggrin.gif

Cowboys CUT someone for being on drugs? whoa, there is a new sheriff in town. Quincy was just trying to bring back the glory days....I heard Nate is waiting for him in the slammer.

Vinny is dead by week 3. The only thing coke head had going for him was that he could run around. Vinny cant even do that anymore. Well he never could.

Parcells never relies on the QB in the system. They won last year by D and getting 3 yards running the ball. He'll do exactly that, put the kid in and hope that he doesnt make mistakes.

How can Parcells be against players on drugs?? Didn't he used to coach Lawrence Taylor??? biggrin.gif

It was not a team-administered test. It was a league administered test, and when the Cowboys got the results that it was his second positive, they apparently made the decision. Jones and Parcells danced around the issue because they respect his privacy, but knew the press would find out anyway.
