David Woodley, the QB who Dan Marino replaced in Miami, has passed away at the age of 44. From ESPN.com:

QUOTE
Former Miami Dolphins and LSU quarterback David Woodley, who started in the 1983 Super Bowl, has died at age 44.

The cause of his death Monday had not been determined, his brother Joe Woodley said.

David Woodley played four seasons in Miami, including the Dolphins' 27-17 loss to Washington in Super Bowl XVII. He also played one season in Pittsburgh.

Woodley finished third in Dolphins history with 5,928 career passing yards and 508 pass completions, behind Dan Marino and Bob Griese. He holds the Miami rookie record with 176 pass completions.

Woodley played at Byrd High School in Shreveport, and shared playing time with Steve Ensminger at LSU from 1977-79. He led the Tigers to a 34-10 victory over Wake Forest in the 1979 Tangerine Bowl.

In 1990, Woodley moved back to Shreveport and studied toward an information technology degree at LSU-Shreveport, where he worked in the physical education department. Woodley also was a radio commentator for Byrd's games last season.

He is survived by six brothers and sisters.

Funeral arrangements had not been set Tuesday.

Anybody remember the whole "Wood-Strock" controversy before Dan Marino came to the team? I was surprised when I read that Woodley was the third most prolific passer in Dolphins' history (after Marino and Griese, of course)! They still haven't said what the cause of death was.

In some ways this is a ghost of Christmas past. I remember him from that era.Must admit I forgot about him over the years. I am sorry about his passing. I hope it is not in poor taste, but there were some rumors around DC at that time.
I find it interesting that it doesnt say if he ever married. It also brings back memories for me as I first met my late partner a few days before the 1983 Super Bowl. Our first real date was going to a (straight) sportsbar in DC and watching the 1983 Super Bowl.We had a wonderful time and I knew that maybe I was on to something wondeful and later found out I was.May all the dearly departed rest in peace.

The obituary I read made no mention of a wife or children. Also, it said the cause of death was liver failure; Woodley had had a liver transplant several years ago.

I was only 13 and living in Texas at the time. My only fond memory of that Super Bowl was Fulton Walker's kickoff return for a touchdown. The Dolphins had a 17-10 lead at halftime, and never scored again. I live in the DC area now, and as a Dolphin fan, people don't let me forget that Super Bowl. We never really heard much from David Woodley again as the rising star of Dan Marino had begun the next year. The little snippets that I would hear every now and then over the years about Woodley, though, seemed to suggest that he was not leading a very happy life. I am sure there is an interesting story here that we may never know.
