ABC's NFL \"Monday Night Football,\" the most successful and longest-running primetime sports series in television history, will kick off its 36th season as the two-time defending Super Bowl champions, the New England Patriots, host the Oakland Raiders and new receiver Randy Moss on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 9 p.m. ET, it was announced jointly today (March 21) by ABC and the NFL.
ABC Sports bookends the NFL kickoff weekend with the first of 16 consecutive Monday night games on Monday, Sept. 12 at 9 p.m. ET when the NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles travel to Atlanta to take on Michael Vick and the defending NFC South champion Falcons in a rematch of the NFC Championship game, which the Eagles won 27-10.
The remainder of the 2005 \"Monday Night Football\" schedule will be announced at a later date.

The Raiders can abviously thank Moss for that one, since they may not have gotten an ABC apperance otherwise. I was hoping that it would be San Diego going to Foxboro, which probably would've been the case had Moss not been traded.
Other national games in week 1
FOX doubleheader - Dallas at San Diego
ESPN - Indianapolis at Baltimore
MNF - Philly at Atlanta
Also the Niners and Cards will play a Sun game in Mexico City's Azteca Stadium. May the over/under on Mexico attendance vs. the other 7 home games begin.

So, "Monday Night Football" will air its first game next season on a....Thursday. This has a nice "Alice in Wonderland" quality to it, don't you think: "I've had nothing yet," Alice replied..."so I can't take more." "You mean you can't take less ," said the Hatter: "it's very easy to take more than nothing."

For the past 3 years, MNF has started on the first Thursday of the season, and does not air a game the last Monday.

Joe In Philly, I will be sure to relay your message to Stinger85.
However, since this thread concerns the kickoff of football season, we should concentrate our efforts on wishing all teams the best of luck.
I look forward to all of these games, it will be quite exciting to see how well Randy Moss associates himself with his new teammates. Hopefully he can show everyone how great he is, and what a gem he can be in the locker room. For me, that will be quite refreshing! Good luck to those Patriots too!

Rather than be happy with the national TV exposure for his Raiders, owner Al Davis is apparently peeved at the NFL and calls the scheduling "payback".
I'm assuming he is upset about it being the kickoff game rather than being upset about playing the defending champions since the schedule is pretty much made years ahead of time.

Al Davis is just a complete joke now. Does anyone think the Raiders will ever win the Super Bowl again as long as he's running things?

I heard on the radio this morning that the full season schedules will be announced on April 13th. The radio hosts were making light of the fact that apparently the NFL Network will have a 2-hour special to announce the schedules. wink

I use to think NFL schedules were set according to team performance; ie, teams with the best records were assigned tougher schedules while the teams with the worst records were awarded weaker schedules?
This must have changed with the realignment.

in inter-conference play each division rotates between playing the 4 teams in another division in the AFC next year the East plays West and South vs. North and then the Pats other 2 interconf games would be againt the north (Pitt) and south (Indy) winners of last year (Jets would get the N&S 2nd place teams, Bills 3rd, Dolphins last). The newer scheduling ensures that every team will play all teams in its conference at least once every 3 years.

It's pretty obvious the NFl wants to overhype Vick this year, that's for sure. Anyone taking bets on a preseason injury?
We get the obligatory b-o-r-i-n-g MNF game of the year as usual:
Monday, Sept. 19 Washington at Dallas
...and the obligatory Manning loss:
Monday, Nov. 7 Indianapolis at New England

The NFL 2005 ScheduleVikes look to have a pretty easy schedule for the most part. Aside from the six divisional games they get the Bucs, Saints, Browns, Rams and Steelers at home and the Bengals, Falcons, Panthers, Giants and Ravens on the road. Steelers, Falcons, Panthers and Ravens will be tough but the rest of the schedule looks pretty winnable right now. That being said, look for Vikes to start out something like 7-1 and struggle to get the Wild Card!

The Columbus Day weekend is at Dallas. Hmmmmm...that might be fun, and with the federal holiday I can fly in Sat. and fly out Mon. and not miss work (assuming I haven't quit by then).
As far as the home games...Cyd, you MUST get down here for one of them. That's an order.

I could be persuaded to do the AZ trip if anyone else is. We have some time until tickets go on sale...not that games in AZ sell out.

The trip to TX appeals to me only because of the holiday weekend.
The Dallas game here -- I guess it won't be too cold by then. Is that the likely game for the PF trip home? And will you bring the relocated booty boy stinger?

I'm not sure why the 6-10 Dallas Cowboys deserve to get two MNF games this year, as well as an internationally-televised Sunday night game and their usual Thanksgiving game. Meanwhile the 9-7 Buffalo Bills, who very nearly made the playoffs, get no MNF games. Ditto for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
I see the New York Giants have a game in San Diego this year. Something tells me that Eli Manning shouldn't expect a warm reception...

It's presumably because Dallas games still draw higher ratings, although the longer they go in their current state of ineptitude I would think the frontrunner segment of their fan base would drop off.
Complaints about the Eagles schedule on the radio and in the paper this morning:
1) The 2 games against the Giants both follow Monday night games, leading to a conspiracy theory that the NFL wants the Giants to be competitive again
2) The final game on Jan. 1st interferes with the Mummers parade (although if they run away with the conference like they did in 2004 no one will care about that game anyway)
3) Christmas Eve game being in AZ
4)
The NFL \\"didn't give the Eagles the proper respect\\" as compared to the Patriots

What are the chances of being able to get seats for the Eagles - Giants game on Dec 11? And would I get out of the stadium alive if I showed up and rooted for Big Blue?
Joe in Philly
Apr 14 2005, 09:12 AM
Other than going through ticket brokers and the like, whatever seats that aren't going to season ticketholders will be put on sale around June, I guess -- based on what we did last year for the Vikings game (calling Ticketmaster in weird locations like Miami instead of dealing with busy signals at the Phila. number) you should be able to get some seats in the upper level.
As for your survival, well, that depends. George and stinger survived last year because:
- (1) they weren't being obnoxious or confrontational
- (2) they were with us Eagle fans
- (3) they got lucky and didn't run into drunken idiots who would disregard (1) and (2) and cause trouble anyway
(Wonder if we should do a special thread for Eagles game get-togethers? PF has to determine which game he's coming home for, we're looking at bringing Cyd to town for a game, there still might be a small chance of a road trip to AZ, etc.)
