LIONS ANNOUNCE PRESS CONFERENCE
The Detroit Lions have scheduled a press conference today tentatively set for 4 p.m. EST at the Allen Park Headquarters and Training Facility. A confirmed time will be distributed by 1:30 p.m. EST.

Lions President and CEO Matt Millen will address the media at that time.

Oh...here we go again!

I always thought the problem was Millen.

Matt just got a Five (5) year contract extension.
He's not going anywhere...

I think WAY too much emphasis is placed on Millen and his role in the Lions poor play. Besides what other GM do you ever hear about in the NFL besides him or Jerry Jones?...quick, who's the GM of the Jacksonville Jaguars or the St. Louis Rams????...yeah...thought so.... biggrin.gif

Most of the stories on Thursday night and Friday, were "talks are underway", etc. kind of stories....The Ford family traditionally flies to Palm Beach right after the Thanksgiving game for the holiday weekend and what we heard is that nothing would be decided (although it pretty much had been) until Monday. We interviewed Mooch at 7:45 this morning Live and he still hadn't received any word of it and was progressing with his day as usual. It all came down about 11am ET and what still hasn't been leaked is if Dick Jauron has agreed to take over for the rest of the season.

Maybe Matt will draft another WR in the first round this year. Nice job Mattie! That's the way to build a contender! Mariucci should be thankful to get out of that hellhole. If Tice goes at the end of the year, I don't think I'd mind if the Vikes hired him.

I got the impression Mariucci had little control over who was or wasn't drafted - he just had to coach. If that's the case, Millen should be as accountable as Mariucci because the draft picks have turned out to be deplorable.

I've never thought much of Mariucci even when he was with the 49ers, since he simply inherited a George Seifert team that was inherited from Bill Walsh. However, I don't think the problems with the Lions are simply his fault alone - Millen is just not a great GM and Bill Ford needs to wake up and smell that coffee. Unfortunately, he may not be willing to part with the money that will come with breaking Millen's contract extension.

Yeah, when is Millen held accountable? He's the guy who has made the mostly crapola draft and free agent choices. Yes, another wide receiver with the first pick is in order for 2006. I think all Millen's buddies at Fox cover for him in their pregame show and analysis when he deserves the axe as much as Mooch.

Let's see, which "hot" candidate will Millen go after again and violate the league's diversity mandate? Which player will he call a faggot next? Millen is a bad joke who deserves the boot, but given how messed up management is there, he'll probably get another extension on top of the one he just got.

Well I can't name the GM's for the Colts, Giants, Steelers, Seahawks, Bengals, Bears, Broncos or even the Jaguars or Rams. But I can tell you they are 10-0, 7-4, 7-3, 9-2, 8-3, 8-3, 9-2, 8-3 and 5-6 respectively. All better records than the 4-7 Lions. And all those teams have made playoff appearnces in recent years or are amking runs this year and have won playoff games since the last time the Lions won one.

Harrington is the problem. When you invest in a QB who does not work out.....

You will never win till you cut ties with him.

Jim, Jim, Jim... take a look see in the ESPN archives or on NFL.com and all the Football "experts" (including guru Mel)put the Lions and their Drafts in the top five or higher in the League over the past three years or so. It's how you MOTIVATE and EXECUTE with those picks that spells success in winning. Mariucci had LONG AGO lost the confidence of his players and the lockerroom is totally divided.

Something had to be done!

Mariucci, as a choice of head coach, came more from the Fords (after all, owners have the last call) than from Millen.

And let's add this little stat. Lions under Mariucci 15-28 (.349). Lions under Millen 20-55 (.267). That means before Mooch, they were 5-27 (.156). And Millen shouldn't be accountable because...?

I can't remember where I read this, but somone posted on a message board that have you noticed that once a coach gets fired from the head coaching job in Detroit, you never hear from or hear of that person again!

Not true MDB. Wayne Fontes took my order at Burger King just last week.

NFLJockGuy, I see what you're sellin', but I'm not just quite buyin' it right now, LOL. However, you're right there in the thick of the quagmire, so you clearly have a better perspective of the situation than most.

Jerry Jones had considerable sway as a GM over his players, even when he had mediocre coaches (I remember - I was living in Dallas during that period). Millen comes off as more of a hands on GM than most and that is why I don't completely agree that the choice of Mariucci came more from the Fords than from Millen. Below are a couple of quotes from Yahoo Sports:

"Mariucci was cut some slack in the past because the team he inherited was crafted by Millen, but expectations were high heading into his third season..."; and

"Millen hired both Mariucci and his predecessor, Marty Mornhinweg, and drafted or signed most of the players currently on the Lions -- and Detroit is an NFL-worst 20-55 since 2001. Millen, a former NFL linebacker and TV analyst was given a five-year extension before this season."

Is there a reason to think either of those quotes aren't true?

Who in their right mind drafts wide receivers in the first round in consecutive years when you need an offensive line to protect the quarterback and produce holes for your running backs? Maybe it's me, but Detroit and Millen could take a page from the Seahawks draft playbook right now in terms of that great offensive line that is protecting Matt Hasselbeck and making Shaun Alexander look like a running God.

Why do I even care about the Lions? I should be more focused on why my Redskins are losing all of the close ones!

I thought he worked at Wnedy's! "Wanna Biggie Size that order?"

He got fired from Wendy's. He didn't get enough production from the crew there either.

I'm beginning to wonder if NFLJockGuy is Matt Millen himself, or at least a member of his immediate family. wink

Anywaaaay.Matt Millen is obviously very good at selling himself but he should definitely have been fired as well.I hope the new coach will find a way to get more production from Kevin Jones and Charles Rogers first and foremost.I'd also like to see a little more originality in the play calling.

Sounds like a very fractured lockerroom in Detroit.

QUOTE
At least two Detroit Lions players remained in Steve Mariucci's corner Monday.

Cornerback Dre' Bly and quarterback Jeff Garcia both thought the blame for the team's poor record shouldn't have rested on the now ex-coach.

\"If we'd had production on offense, in particular the quarterback position, Mooch wouldn't have been fired,\" Bly told the Detroit Free Press. \"If Jeff Garcia hadn't gotten hurt, we wouldn't be in this position today. Mooch wouldn't have gotten fired.\"

Garcia missed the first five games after breaking his leg in the final preseason game. He started twice -- winning in Cleveland and losing to Chicago -- but then missed the Minnesota, Arizona and Dallas games with soreness in the leg.

\"We're all at fault, but I just feel like Joey [Harrington]'s been here four years, and being the No. 3 pick in the draft, he hasn't given us anything,\" Bly told the paper. \"He hasn't given us what the third pick in the draft should give us.\"

Garcia, who played for Mariucci in San Francisco, pointed to the Lions front office.

\"You start to question whether the organization has the people in place who can go about making the proper selections,\" Garcia told WXYT-AM, according to the paper. \"You really have to question that.\"

Typical knee jerk reaction of a lousy franchise - instead of doing what it takes to field a winning team (scout talent, draft smartly, have a longer term gameplan) the Lions chopped the head most visible. And Millen skates? He must be giving the Fords some good head. eek!

Marty,
I love it when you talk dirty! How did Shirley ever let you go?!

Since the Lions don't seem likely to perform a miracle,I think the new coach should go with rookie quarterback Dan Orlovsky for the rest of the season. Why not? I think their loss to Minnesota, today, just proved my point.

Many Lions fans will be wearing orange today as a protest to the poor management of this team. The game will be televised here on CBS.Cincinatti will probably feel right at home with their team colors being displayed throughout the stadium!

The anti-Millen signs and chants have surfaced at games of other Detroit sports teams since Thanksgiving, as well as at University of Michigan and Michigan State basketball games.

On Friday night at The Palace of Auburn Hills, Pistons forward Rasheed Wallace joined fans in the chant during a late timeout in the game against the Chicago Bulls.
