Even though it doesn't start for another week, the Redskins are off to a bad start. This Mark Brunell signing is only slightly better than the Deion Sanders deal.

This team that doesn't have a defensive lineman on its roster that should start, gives an $8.6 million signing bonus to a 34 year old, 11 year, quarterback. Quarterback ain't one of the Redskins needs!

Actually, this might be a little worse than the Deion deal.
Joe in Philly
But...but...this can't be! I mean, it's Joe Gibbs! He's a freakin' genius! He'd never do something stupid, would he??? wink

Mark Brunell... Isn't he the guy that does all those reality shows?? tongue.gif

Didn't they trade for Brunell? I thought I heard that they gave up a third round draft pick.
PCC
They actually did trade a 3rd round pick for Brunell, which only makes it worse.

A third round pick for the right to overpay an aging quarterback...
Joe in Philly
Technically they haven't made the trade. Trades aren't permitted until March 3. But Brunell has agreed to contract terms once the trade officially takes place.
PCC
Two papers report Dolphins will pick up Eagles' Feeley

...and just think, they did it without giving him an $8.6 million signing bonus!

Patrick Ramsey is not very happy about the Skins acquiring Mark Brunell....ESPN's story recounting the dinner meeting that Ramsey's agent, Jimmy Sexton, had with Dan Snyder in Indianapolis last night definitely makes it sound as if Patrick is not going to quietly accept his demotion to second string (and I can't say that I blame him either)....a few interesting quotes that I found from the story include:

"There's only one way to resolve this mess and that's to trade Patrick," Sexton said. "I mean, they knew how Patrick felt before [Friday night], and they certainly know even more so now. He wants out. Plain and simple. And if they don't think there is a viable market for him, give me 15 minutes, and I'll bring them a fistful of offers".

As for Gibbs' assurances that Brunell and Ramsey will compete for the starting job, well, Sexton isn't buying that at all.

"It's a farce," Sexton said. "I mean, how can they say that? They just paid Brunell, what, like $40 million? The finances dictate Brunell is the starter. That's the reality, and they can't think we're dumb enough not to know that, can they?"

I'm not a big fan of many sports agents (at least greedy idiots like Drew Rosenhaus and Scott Boras, anyway, who don't give a damn about the impact that their client's contract has upon the long term welfare of the team or the sport as a whole, for that matter) but I find it refreshing to see an agent like Jimmy Sexton speak the truth instead of the "politically correct" b.s. that we so often hear via the media....if nothing else, this should make for an interesting training camp come late summer (assuming Ramsey is still on the Skins roster, of course).

Btw, does anyone happen to know if this is the same Jimmy Sexton who was a middle infielder for the Astros and the A's in the late 70s and early 80s (and who was so cute back then he was one of my first "baseball crushes" as a kid)? smile.gif

Here's a twist: the 49ers say Terrell Owens failed to file the necessary papers with the NFL to void his contract and become an unrestricted free agent, and the NFL ruled that he's their property for the final 3 years of his current deal, pending a grievance hearing. His agent says there will be an appeal.

Free agency opens tomorrow. The Vikings have the most room under the cap at $33 mil. Here's to hoping they find a great CB (possibly stealing one from the Eagles biggrin.gif ) and I'm hoping for a good #2 WR. I like Nate Burleson, but I wouldn't mind seeing the Vikes try to go after Darrell Jackson.
Joe in Philly
Well, the Eagles aren't rushing to sign Troy Vincent or Bobby Taylor. And say what you will about how well the Eagles have (or haven't) replaced guys they let escape via free agency, but when they let someone go, those players aren't having much impact on their new teams. Brian Mitchell and Hugh Douglas last year, Jeremiah Trotter before that. So let the buyer beware.

The Niners have released Jeff Garcia.

Da Freak is in Da House boys....
PCC
And Da House overpaid for him and his bad back.

Guess that ends your dream of Sapp signing with the Iggles. wink Sure looks like a great deal.

Meanwhile the Bears picked up Thomas Jones, who before last year was thought to be a HUGE bust after 3 lousy seasons in Arizona. He kind of bounced back last year in Tampa but I don't know that he is an upgrade over Anthony Thomas.
PCC
Redskins agree to terms with Shawn Springs.
PhillyFan
I wonder if they gave the "greatest" coach of all time an extra 20 mil of salary cap space? that team is dead in a year or 2.
PCC
Oh yes, and giving a $16 million dollar signing bonus to someone who'll be in traction by October is really a smart move!
stinger85
Ah, the love is starting already!! I just hope that the Randy Moss trade rumors are really just rumors. If the Vikes trade him I'll be crushed. Glad to see they signed Kleinsasser though.
coyoteugly
There's no way the Vikings trade Moss. Along the same line, there's no way the Vikings sign Owens. So, all my Vikings friends who read this board but do not post... not going to happen.

OH THERE PCC in you deadskin myopia....

i'm just wondering, how much did the skins have under the cap anyway? Brunell... the RB... now spikes... Plus all those GREAT additions last year... tick tick tick till the salary bomb explodes....

Same story different year.

Everything I've heard about him talks about his foot and ankle. I've heard nothing about his back.

And when you have $28 million in cap space, you can afford to overpay a time or two.
PhillyFan
I think that maybe the skins should concentrate on maybe getting some good interior OL help. DL help to stop the run and pressure the passer.

You can have the best RB in the league but if there is no one to block for him... he'll get ya 2.5 yards a carry instead of 2.

Looks to me like "the greatest coach ever" will be spending all his money on a handful of players...

But then again up till week 4 of each season PCC thinks they win the SB, not just make the playoffs... so carry on!

I think the Redskins' O-line is potentially decent to good. That doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement, but Joe Bugel is a huge upgrade over Kim Helton. The big troublespot IMO is left guard... Dockery has to improve big time.

The D-Line still needs someone who can not only stuff the run, but also pressure the passer from the defensive tackle position. It's pretty sad when a guy who's ten minutes short of his AARP membership is your best pass rusher.

As far as linebacker goes, I'd prefer it be a solid, not spectacular guy who follows his assignments. Trade Jeremiah Trotter back to the Eagles for a hoagie. Or a Philly CHeesesteak. The hoagie would be an even trade... the cheese steak would work in the Skins' favor. wink

You bois crack me up... The "we have the best coaches ever" line is getting pretty old.

Bugel... Gibbs... blah blah...

Give it a rest.

How many Super Bowls has Andy Reid won?

Just wondering.

RIIIIGHT, and how many times has bugel been fired since he left the skins the first time?

This is all subjective dude... just because Gibbs won a SB in the what... early 90's.. doesnt make him a great coach in the 2000's with a salary cap.

The only thing they have proved is they spend money in FA, and we see where that got your team last year... and the year before.. and the year before.. and 3 coaches ago...

He also got a Super Bowl ring, which, last I checked... the Eagles never got. Oh, they won one NFC Championship Game back in 1980? Big whoop.

Until your Eaglets win a Super Bowl, you have no room to come talk to me about greatness.
PhillyFan
UHMMMMMM, WTF are you talking about dude...

Point of fact, right here, right now... TODAY.. not 1990 or 1991, which means squat. Right HERE RIGHT NOW, idiots... The skins are not that good. Each year they get a new coach.. New round of FA's to fix things... and now each year it turns out the same.

Hell we aint even talking about the birds right now.

GB won a SB way back when... then a few years back. What does that have to do with 2004? Other than when the obvious is pointed out... you say.. where's your SB.

Just having gibbs on the sidelines does not fix the skins problems. Even the Tampa fans could figure this out... wait scratch that...

funny, go back and look at your quotes... "Last year... and the year before... and the year before" and then you say "we are talking about 2004, right here, right now". Are the voices in your head talking or what? Heck, I don't disagree with you, I am just pointing out your "SYBIL" tendencies.

I'm not saying that. But you're so damn quick to diss Gibbs that I figured I'd point out that he has three Super Bowl rings, while Andy Reid has, what, three PRO BOWL coaching gigs.

When the Eaglets win ONE Super Bowl, you can come talk to me. Until then, don't bother.
Kenny
I guess the Eaglets won't be getting TO either, he has been traded to Baltimore.

Looks like the Bucs are only going to get a draft choice for Keyshawn as well.
George Twins fan
Can't believe the Niners could only get a second round draft pick for Owens. I guess because this draft is considered to be ripe with WR talent, but still seems TO would be worth more than the 51st overall pick! But if TO wasn't happy with Garcia as his QB, what's he going to think of Kyle Boller?

Also surprised Garcia isn't garnering more interest. Surely teams like the Steelers, Chargers, Raiders, Cowboys and Cardinals could use him. Perhaps there is a closeted reason for the lack of interest?

Perhaps the Niners were thinking that getting rid of T.O. was addition by subtraction.

"Closeted." Interesting.

My guess is the surface reasons include: 1) his salary, 2) his age, and 3) his less-than-impressive throwing arm. Unless there's more to the "rumors" about who Jeff likes to "receive" than we thought! tongue.gif

The Eagles got a 2nd round pick from Miami for a 3rd-string quarterback. The only difference is it's in 2005 instead of 2004. I think they just wanted to be rid of TO.
ballplayer3
I wonder what is going to happen when T.O gets angry because he is not getting the ball thrown to him? Or will Ray Lewis let him know who runs the team? what do you guys think?

This is Ray Lewis' team. TO will not be allowed to pull any of his nonsense so long as Lewis is a Raven, IMO.

Maybe teams read the interview where he admitted that he's a bit of a mess and went "Woah". Or maybe they've been lurking on Outsports and read the gay rumors! smile.gif The last person a football team needs as a headcase is the QB. There's a long time between now and training camp and, although I'm sure teams would want their starting QB to be there to learn the system, maybe it won't work that way with him.

How long before Owens whines about being disrespected for being traded for only a second round pick? I give it a week.
coyoteugly
Jeff Garcia...

Perhaps it's age-related (34 years old). Perhaps it's ability-related. Was it the 49er system that was responsible for his success, or his skills? Why did no Division I College offer him a scholarship out of high school? Why did no NFL team draft him after a decent career at San Jose State, and he ended up as a 3rd string QB of the Calgary Stampeders? Why did no NFL team except the 49ers pursue him after he took his team to the Grey Cup and was named MVP?

Well it may not be that long! According to ESPN.com and phillyBurbs.com:

QUOTE
the Eagles agreed to a deal in principle to acquire the superstar receiver Thursday, only to have the 49ers turn the tables by sealing a deal with the Ravens instead.

Owens and agent David Joseph were furious, according to the Web site, which serves the Calkins Newspapers chain. Joseph told league officials Thursday night he plans to file a grievance against the 49ers, and union chief Gene Upshaw is reportedly already involved in the process.

Two league insiders familiar with the negotiations, and speaking on the condition of anonymity, told Philly reporters Thursday night that the Eagles actually finalized a trade with the 49ers and hammered out a long-term, multi-million dollar contract with Owens.

The deal would have sent Owens to Philadelphia for a fifth-round pick and a player, possibly receiver James Thrash, according to the report.

\"Terrell was ecstatic,\" an NFL agent familiar with the details of the negotiations, told the Web site. \"Philly is where he wanted to go all along. He was under the impression he was an Eagle. It was a done deal.\"

But before the paperwork was signed, according to the Web site, 49ers general manager Terry Donahue quietly accepted the Ravens' offer of a second-round pick in this year's draft and filed trade papers without informing Joseph or Eagles negotiator Joe Banner, or giving them a chance to match the offer.

The Eagles, according to the Web site, did not learn the 49ers had shipped Owens to the Ravens until a team employee saw an ESPN report on Thursday afternoon. And Joseph didn't know about the trade until he got a phone call from the Eagles moments later.

I heard about this on the radio this morning. Talk about double-dealing. This reminds me of what happened when Eric Lindros was traded by the Quebec Nordiques to both the Flyers and Rangers. I wonder if Owens has any legal recourse, or if he might just refuse to show up in Baltimore and hope to force another trade? And how stupid must he and his agent be -- if they only filed the correct paperwork, he'd have been a free agent!

The Vikings signed Antoine Winfield from the Jets. He was supposed to be the 2nd best CB in free agency after Champ Bailey.

Now if we can get a good DE and a second WR I can get back to my talk about the Superbowl!! biggrin.gif

TO definitely isn't happy...

QUOTE
Owens expressed his anger on FOX Sports' 'Best Damn Sports Show Period.'

\"Right now, Terrell Owens is kind of unemployed at the moment,\" Owens told FOX. \"I don't have anything bad to say about Baltimore. And Baltimore was definitely one of my choices, but they weren't high on the list. My priority was trying to get to the Eagles. We were a matter of minutes away from getting something done and that's when the 49ers and (GM Terry) Donahue got wind of that and sent me to Baltimore.\"

Owens also spoke negatively of his phone conversation with Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome.

\"I've talked to Ozzie a few times the last couple of days,\" Owens said. \"Honestly, I didn't really feel comfortable with our conversation. He knows I'm really not happy with the situation. I'm going to stand my ground and see if we can't get something resolved.\"

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome didn't seem concerned about the reaction, saying that Owens is a Raven and that he's under contract.
The article also has a transcript from a chat at his website that he supposedly went on...
Jim Allen
1. Jim Allen hates it when people talk about themselves in the third person, as it makes that person seem as if they have a split personality, something that Jim Allen wouldn't wish on anyone

2. The 49ers did a big f**k YOU to Owens; they weren't going to let him be a distraction for the last few years AND, after he'd worn out his welcome, get his wish on where he wanted to go to; shitty on their part, sure, but I don't have a problem with that! smile.gif
