Full Version: Sammy Sosa retired?

Joe in Philly
Could be. He turned down the Nationals' offer of a one-year, $500,000 non-guaranteed contract, even though he's 12 homers short of 600.

QUOTE
Once, Sosa owned this sport. Once, he was more popular in the city of Chicago than deep-dish pizza. Once, he seemed to be a symbol of all that was good about baseball.

His page in the encyclopedia will show he had more 60-homer seasons (three) than anybody who ever swung a bat. In the eight seasons, from 1996 through 2003, he averaged 51 homers. And nobody else in the sport was within 40 of him in that astonishing slice of baseball time.

But it's been one messy tumble down the mountainside over these last three years. Cork exploded out of his bat. Clouds hovered over his accomplishments. He got subpoenaed by Congress, and suddenly forgot how to speak English.

He is such an idiot. He's insulted, because no one has offered him a huge deal, a year after he hits 14 HRs, and is racked by injuries...He needs to go away. Never liked him.

I heard a bad rumor that the Yankees are intrested in him...I hope it aint true because why the hell would they need him??? they need pitching..

I dont have no ill will towards the guy I never been a big fan of his but I dont want to see him retire just yet..even though he clearly isnt the same ballplayer anymore...I still wish him the best of luck.

Me too. Maybe he thinks the fences are too far at the Nats' ballpark? Staticians? How far back are the fences? Half a million?

"suddenly forgot English"

LOL, before that happened, I was listening to the afternoon sports show in Boston, and one of the co-hosts at the time said that he was in the locker room interviewing someone, and nearby was Sosa talking with a teammate..speaking better English than you or I. Then a reporter walks up to him to interview him and he pulls out the "Si, Si...me no understand" shit. What an ass****.

I hope he does retire.

I haven't trusted him or his stats since the corked bat incident, and I can't believe people were so willing to believe his excuse for the bat--"oh it must have gotten put in the rotation by accident" or something to that effect. Sorry ass excuse.

Yeah, I had to work backstage at a fashion show with pro-athletes a few years back (nice work if you can get it!) smile.gif , and Sammy was one of the models... his english was fine.

In my mind, his "me first" attitude was one of the main reasons the scrubs could not get over the hump.
