I believe the NFL no longer permits that. The GBP are grandfathered (politically correct: elderly-person-enabled).

twin58 -- you're right -- the NFL no longer allows Packer-type ownership. Dunno about MLB rules though. NFL rules mandate that one person control at least 30% of a franchise and that the ownership group consist of no more than 25 partners. The Packers are publicly owned, non-profit corporation with more than 100,000 shareholders.

Come to think of it, I guess baseball and football are two different things. Next time I'll think more clearly and assume that the conditions of one do not automatically apply to the other.

By the way, what's wrong with having public ownership of a team? Sounds good to me.

I agree 100% twin58. I've always thought that. Even sponser players for community involvment. Like the kids sponser the animals at the zoos. Make a large enough contrabution and get invited to dress a player before a game.

The minor league team in my town had a program where you could "adopt" a player to live in your home. I found out about it too late, though.
