I won't quibble with picking the '68 UCLA squad as # 1-they were pretty dominating and destroyed Houston and the Big E in the rematch. The UK 80's squad as #2 is a joke-they lost 2 games, and I never thought of them as invincible.
The ONLY team that was better than the '76 Hoosiers was the '75 Hoosiers, with Green and Laskowski. If May doesn't break his arm vs. Purdue, that team blitzes thru the tournament and Woodens' final game in San Diego is a double-digit loss.Over the 2 year period from 1975-76,IU lost ONE game-the '75 regional final to UK in Dayton when May couldn't play. Earlier in the regular season, with a healthy May, they beat that same Kentucky team by 30 pts,and it wasn't even that close.
So the Bruins claimed another title, and the Hoosiers missed out on immortality. With the loss of Green and Laskowski to graduation, the '76 Hoosiers were actually a weaker team, especially offensively. The '76 season opened with the delayed "rematch" with UCLA in St.Louis.With All-Americans Marques Johnson and Richard Washington the Bruins were virtually intact from their championship team.Abernathy took over Greens' starting slot and IU won by 20+ pts.The Bruins were embarrassed and promised revenge if they met again for a game that "mattered".The rematch at the Final Four was another convincing 20+ pt IU win,and I think the Bruins realized that their '75 championship was a result of one of those ironic twists of fate.

Or in this case, that twist of Scott Mays' arm that occurred 2 games before the start of the '75 tourney.Without that freakish break,we could well be talking about that 2 year period as an era of total domination with the Hoosiers winning back to back undefeated championships.
