I can't see the Phillies re-signing him now.

Here's a joke: a local TV station in their pre-12 noon broadcast tease: "Shocking news from the Phillies! One of their star players is charged with attempted murder." Star player? He's not even the closer!

First his mother's kidnapping and now this. Too bizarre. Favorite quote comes from his attorney, Jose Luis Tamayo: "This of course can in some way hurt his career as a professional ballplayer, and all will depend on the way he is brought before justice."

Yeah, trying to set someone on fire could have a negative impact on one's baseball career!

I just saw this on CNN.com, this is crazy stuff. It isn't even the crime itself that shocks me, it's the way it was done. That's something new on me for a professional athlete. There weren't any bars or floozies involved. eek!

I wonder if these workers had any link to his mother's kidnapping. Maybe Urbina suspected as much an was out for revenge?

Well, I think we all need to keep in mind that it's not certain he was involved. He does seem to be cooperating, so whatever that means.

But, I've considered what you're saying and it wouldn't surprise me. If someone kidnapped my mother, I'd be a little more on edge about such things.

For what it's worth... ("Prelude to a Dish"?)..., Oogie has been an off-field problem since his days with the Expos (remember them?). He and his brother were arrested outside a Mtl bar (which my sister was 'tending) after beating up some guy who apparently looked at Oogie wrong. I think they received the standard "Slap on the Wrists" sentence, with the judge citing the "Imporant Persons Act."

Si.com is reporting that Urbina has been sentenced to 14 years in prison.
