Charlotte just took out Syracuse in the Dome

Chaminade beat Villanova in the 1st round of the Maui Invitational

And little Lubbock Christian took out 2 D1 teams in 3 days - Rhode Island and Bradley
gayhawk
And UConn has been flirting with the upset bug. As I type this, they're trailing GA Tech 49-38!
Boltergeist
flirting with the upset bug, I think the Huskies just got screwed by it last night 77-61, if Pacific can beat Duke ... LOOK OUT AMERICA!
George Twins fan
And remember UConn barely got by Yale earlier.
gayhawk
And last year my 'hawks got pummeled in NYC, but made it to the last game of the year, (Blast you Orangemen, BLAST YOU! wink ) so who can say what effect this will have in the long run.
Boltergeist
Georgia Tech followed up the UConn win with a 20-point win over Texas Tech in the NIT Finals.

and speaking of bad losses to national championship games, remember who beat Michigan St. in December when the won the title a few years back?
Rick62
Was it Wright State, Breesboy?

Just shows you why these preseason and early season polls are so meaningless. They make for fun conversations and debates, but they are utterly pointless.
Boltergeist
4 (er, 5) of the Top 7 went down this week (UConn, Zona, MSU, and 'Cuse) it would be complete havoc if Duke loses in Alaska (EDIT: I just suggested it, didn't think it would happen). Now KU and Florida wi;; probably be splitting #1 votes.

add Louisville to the upset victims, losing to Iowa in OT of the Wooden Tradition

...another interesting side note on the Spartan Classic this year featured Michigan St. vs. Penn in one semi and Indiana St. vs. DePaul in the other.

Well, Duke did lose so that completes the list.
My Gamecocks are an undefeated 6-0 right now but they ahve yet to face tough competition other than Richmond. The Spiders are year in and year out some of the most underrated teams out there and usually provide excitement for some teams in the NCAA tourney.
I don't think the Gamecocks will have the star power to go a long way this year. You never can tell though what might happen.

And this was to commemorate the 1979 Final Four, of course (Magic Johnson vs. Larry Bird in the final).

I'm having a tough time determining how Auburn will fare this season for the same reason. We've had convincing wins to this point over smaller NCAA tourney teams -- but I have no idea whether those teams were projected to have any talent this time around.

I'm pleased the Jayhawks are at the top of the poll, but I'm also confused about how they ascended to the top so early in the season — particulary as they've only played one ranked opponent so far this season.

Any insights?

Basically, if a team loses, they almost certainly go down in the polls. KU became #1 by default almost. However, they DID beat a higher ranked team, so it's not bogus. And it's very early yet, so it doesn't matter too much. Also, there are times when a team loses or simply doesn't play and still goes up in the polls. Conversely, a team can win and drop a few places. It's arbitrary to a point. The coaches poll is the least trustworty one. Some coaches have been known to have an assistant cobble together a list for submission. And this latest coaches poll has GaTech getting a first place vote, but not even making the top ten. I'd bet that if Calhoun is a voter, he gave them the nod.
I just like lists myself, and the top 25 is a fun one to pick apart.

today was upset averted Saturday: Kentucky, Mizzou, Zona, St. Joe's all dodge bullets. St. John's hung with Duke for 30 minutes

but guess who's down by 4 in the last 2 minutes, ANOTHER new #1 next week (Florida)

I'm sad to note that Stanford beat KU today, so presumably the #1 ranking will go to someone else. Oh, well ... it was fun while it lasted. Good thing the season's still young.
wade n atlanta
Another #1 team falls and my Gamecocks are still undefeated at 8-0. Who knew? They should jump into the top 25 I would guess just because of the number of wins. I'm anxious to see what happens in the SEC this year as many of the teams are really doing well. Last time I checked, the SEC teams were 54-7 against non-conference competition.

I will be rooting hard for my Gonzaga Bulldogs to beat Georgetown back in D.C. this afternoon. True all around performance from everybody yesterday in beating Maryland. GO ZAGS!!!!

I know it may be old news and it wasn't an upset per se, but what are UCLA fans who couldn't wait to get Steve Lavin out of town, thinking about the Bruins 1 point win over VERMONT last week. Did Lavin leave the program in such bad shape that they can't beat a program like Vermont by more than one point at home?
ung
The Gonzaga bulldog will go down in defeat to another bulldog. The Hoyas of GU will win. Hoya Saxa!
MetsBoy
It was George Washington that went down in defeat to Gonzaga, not Georgetown. The Hoyas are a perfect 6-0 so far, defeating powerhouse Davidson this weekend for win #6. It's amazing that the Hoyas aren't ranked in the top 25... wink

That's 'cuz Georgetown is the K-State of college hoops with their cupcake out of conference schedule. Playing Amy Vanderbilt's school for Blind Girls just somehow doesn't resonate with pollsters.

How bout those Gonzaga Bulldogs. First team from west of the Mississippi to win the whole shebang. Ronny Turiaf was simply magical.
NorCalHusker
How about those Stanford Cardinal, beating #1 Kansas even without their best player, Josh Childress?

Looking forward to the Dec. 20th game, puckman.
gayhawk
congrats to Stanford and their fans on that.

Vermont basketball, women's and men's, has been growing steadily the last several years. I love seeing teams like UVM raise to the ocassion.

But anyway, back to tonight's game: I was lovin' the Arizona v. Texas game. I wished Texas could have played cleaner down the stretch, though.

Random fact: I know an assistant coach at Texas. He was kinda jerky to me in college, but since getting to Texas, he's been exceptionally political (e.g., returning ALL of my calls, keeping in touch on Texas letterhead, etc.)

He'll be a head coach some day for sure.
Boltergeist
Well looks like UConn might be back at #1 in the AP next week ... Maryland is up 14 on Florida, 17 minutes left.

The Maryland/Florida game has been CRAZY. It's into overtime now...

...and the Terps pull the upset! smile.gif

Boy, that #1 ranking is sure looking like the kiss of death right now, isn't it?

No kidding! Congrats to the Terps.

Just...could you kids in College Park NOT riot every time the Terps win a big one?

All the Gators had to do was make some free throws -- they missed four in a row during a crucial stretch near the end of regulation and only went 20 for 30 overall. Awful -- esp. on your home court where it's quiet. Of course the Terps weren't better -- 8-18 -- do these players think they're in the NBA already! tongue.gif

Good game to watch, though, it was exciting if not particularly well-played in the end. If Florida could make foul shots, or if Maryland had any offense the last 10 min of regulation, the game would have not gone to overtime. Florida has the talent and so does Md. Md. plays a bit too one-on-one to be a consistant winner, they will get blown out in some games while winning big in others.

And that Md. soph with the hyphenated name (Carson-Newman? Castor-Pollox? Cassidy-Sundance?) was not only very good but rather nice to look at. I love espn coverage, they don't shy away from some close-up underarm shots during foul shots. wink

Damn it is good to have college bball back again!

Mr. Hyphen is Caner-Medley.

Thanks, Breesboy. Mr. Hyphen-Caner-Medley was very impressive, inside and outside, a big man who could dribble and shoot the jump shot. And pretty hot as well. biggrin.gif

I watched the end of the game for two reasons:

1. Mr. Hyphen; and

2. I was rooting for GatorJamie's team since she has been such a good sport on our Eagles Mojo thread. Sorry GJ frown

No problem, dude. Thank for the props and, of course, the Gator mojo.

It's early in the season and a nonconference loss to a very good team. We snapped the Terps' 87-game nonconference win streak last year and they returned the favor to our 40-game streak this year. Payback's a bitch!

The Twerps beat UF after losing to WVU earlier in the week

Wonder how WVU will do once the BE season starts

I talked to my brother, who works at College Park. He said the kids (and I invoke this label purposefully) @ College Park went to the football stadium to rip down the goal posts.

Went to the football stadium. After a BASKETBALL game. This could be a very interesting season...

Nik Caner-Medley's best assets: brains and a good attitude as well as not bad looking. And according to his bio he's a Dolphins fan. Not sure how I feel about that.

My favorite member of the Maryland team: academic counselor Hajj Turner both for looks and the role he plays in keeping the players focused on what's important.

IMO the most important stat for a b-ball player is how well the whole team does (scores) when that player is on the court.

With just five players and an intense pace everyones value goes up, more so than the other major sports; hussle off the ball, acting as a decoy for the oppositions best defender(s), assists - all of these are critical to the game.

Oh, and ditto on the "it's early still" comments. Maryland won in 2002 with 4 seniors. Hard to keep that kind of experienced crew together nowadays with the best players following the money to the pros ASAP.

Nevada (no not UNLV, just plain old Nevada!) 75, #6 Kansas 61

SMU 60, #17 Purdue 59

UCLA 64, Michigan State 58 I know UCLA winning doesn't sound like much of an upset but Michigan State is now 4-5 and probably need to win this one given their tough nonconference schedule. They were very highly rated in most preseason polls but seem to be reeling at the moment.

I don't get to watch many games live, and when I do this happens. ugh!
I'll get over it in about 3 days...

Louisville. The only program this season to beat 2 #1 teams (Florida and Kentucky) in two weeks!
and one great reason to follow Louisville (besides the hunky sexy coach Rick Pitino) is 6'8" forward Luke Whitehead.

Luke against Kentucky

more Misery for the Tigers as they just lost to Belmont tonight.
gayhawk
It seems Mizzou is in meltdown mode. They can dangerous in the conference, though.

On another note, is Louisville underrated at no.7 ?
SmoothRon
I think that the NCAA sanctions hammer "cloud" is starting to get to Mizzou!! To lose to tiny Belmont is unacceptable!!
gayhawk
The NCAA would've had an easier time of it these days if they were still in Overland Park.
