Indy Mike:
danimal, actually New Castle High School has about 800 students according to the Indiana Dept. of Education's website. There are about 120 high schools in the state with larger enrollment. A lot of school's gymnasium sizes are not proportional to the enrollment. I'm not sure how they keep churning out Division I players.
OK, thanks for the clarification. Still, I've heard of schools that are big enough to split but didn't because they wanted a bigger pool of players ... which worked back in the days of the one-class state tournament. Now the tournament has size-based classes, like those in other states, so it doesn't matter.
If anything, the field house size backs up
ung's point about Indiana's obsessive devotion to prep hoops.
Actually, I have nothing against Butler or New Castle ... I just saw the article and thought it fit the topic.
