For many, he's a pioneer. When he arrived at Temple, there weren't many black coaches at that or any other level. These days, it's mostly a non-issue.

\"I never looked at myself as a black player, a black teacher, a black coach,\" Chaney said.

\"I feel proud that, incidentally, I'm black. It was an accident, I guess. I don't know. But it wasn't something that I had a choice in. But you do have a choice about working hard and excelling, and being someone who is fair to other human beings. I think I've done that.

\"One of the great things I learned from John Wooden and Al McGuire and Jimmy [Maloney] and so many others, John Thompson, my friends, that being someone with humility is pretty special today. Arrogance has its place, but it should be put on a scale where it should not overwhelm you, or overwhelm others.\"
