Full Version: Ugliest NHL Jersey

Hey hockeynuts..who do you think has the ugliest hockey jersey? My vote would have to go to...drumroll please....and sorry Atlanta, but the Thrashers home jersey is pretty awful. I caught a glimpse of them last night during the ESPN game, and the mustard yellow, or was it orange, stuck in my brain... wink

I've thought for the past few years that the "new" Canucks logo (they seem to change it at least once a decade) is not only cartoonish but makes the entire uniform look ugly (especially on their home white "sweaters")....while it may not be as bad as their multi-mustard colored "V" logo (a combination of brown, orange, red, and yellow if memory serves me correctly) that adorned their jerseys in the 70s and earlys 80s, they definitely top the list now....come to think of it, the Canucks performance on the ice during the past few years has been far from stellar as well -- do you suppose this new logo (which debuted about the time Messier went to Vancouver) could have something to do with the team's recent record of futility?

Coyotes are up there in the ugly category. Sharks are still ugly.
And if you want to toss in the throwback teams, the Whalers and Jets were pretty bad. No offense to their new homes who have cool jerseys!
hockeyTom
dallas, would have to respectfully diagree with your choice of Coyotes. I put them up there in the coolest jersey. I have the home one myself, but to each his own. wink

Gamecock, I agree that old Vancouver Canucks V-logo was dreadful, but I rather like the current one, even though it seems to have copied the shark motif from San Jose (that creature on the Canucks' uniform looks like a shark to me). BTW, I'm not sure what you meant by Vancouver's 'recent record of futility'. Although I haven't watched any of their recent games on TV, the Canucks are still on top in their division, and are only on a two-game losing streak (to Detroit and lowly Nashville).

Speaking of Nashville, I think the Predators have one of the ugliest uniforms in the NHL. Among my other least favourite logos are the Hurricanes, Oilers, Flyers (sorry, Joe) and the Rangers (just too nondescript for me). I'm not overly-fond of the Senators logo either, despite having grown up in Ottawa, before they had a team there.

Puckman, actually I don't mind the Thrashers logo, once I took a closer look at it. I gather a 'thrasher' is some sort of bird? Maybe that's what hawks are called down in Georgia?

BTW, I like the Phoenix Coyotes uniform too.

I like the Coyotes sweaters, though I could do with a little less teal (anyone remember when Keith Olberman tried to start a "bocott teal in uniforms" petition??) Dislike the Avs third jersey--orange (pumpkin?) with black block lettering. Ugly, ugly, ugly! And the unis worn by the Islanders last night were also orange with gold lettering. Truly vile. Leave that crap to Liberace impersonators.

I remain faithful to the Blackhawks, Bruins, Blues, Kings, and Avs (home & away--not the third)

A more pertinent question is, anyone remember Keith Olbermann? wink

It seems two things are making it worse: the change of jerseys for marketing purposes, and the addition of "third" jerseys.

The Flyers' former third jersey was a simple black number, which then replaced their old orange ones as the road jersey. Now their new third jersey is orange (though a slightly different shade, I think), with sort of a triangle or diamond shape on the arms instead of stripes leading from the shoulders, with some white and gray around the logo and lettering to try and mimic a 3-D look. (Watch for the highlights of tonight's game against Boston to see it.) I can't get used to it.

Wow, I went to the Thrasher website to debunk this particular idea, but you are indeed correct. The Atlanta Thrashers were named for the state bird of Georgia, the Georgian Brown Thrasher. The website is not specific as to what type of bird it is: hawk, thrush, humming. However, from the look of the beak on the mascot, I would guess that it isn't one of the major predators.

I thought that they were called the Thrashers as some sort of outreach to skate punks and have hated the name ever since it was introduced. I guess I'm going to have to take that hate and heap it onto the Predators and the Wild just a little more. I don't think I can hate the name Bluejackets any more than I already do.

The Yellow Nashville jersy MUST go. It's disgusing. I also don't really like the Columbus jerseys either.

Nothing was worse that the Haloween Canucks jerseys though.

Jqueer,
Thanks for the info regarding the Thrashers logo. Before noticing the bird symbol, I thought the word was derived from the verb 'thrash', ie to beat or whip...after all, this is what some hockey players do to their opponents with their sticks and fists. Reminds me of the unsavory name of our local junior hockey team here, the Calgary 'Hitmen'. But I prefer the less violent association with birds for the Atlanta team.

Marc,

I had always thought the "hitmen" name came from Brett Hart, who I thought owned the team. Am I incorrect?

Hi Trevor,

I really don't follow junior hockey, but when you mentioned Brett the 'Hit Man' Hart, it all started coming back to me. I did a bit of research and you're right, Brett was one of the original owners of the team (along with Joe Sakic, Theoren Fleury and a few others). But the team is now owned by the Calgary Flames.

As for Brett Hart and his big family of wrestlers, they are well-known in this city, but not universally loved. You likely recall Brett's brother Owen Hart died in a tragic WWF stunt a few years ago, and his wife Martha sued. She has written a book called 'Broken Harts', which I intend to read. Apparently it exposes the greed and corruption of the WWF and many of the Hart family members, although she has remained on good terms with Brett. Through the creation of the Owen Hart Foundation, Martha has helped several children's organizations.

Sorry to go off on that tangent...I know this is supposed to be about hockey, not wrestling!
Trevor
Hey marc,

The Hart family is farily dysfunctional, from all reports I've heard, not just realting to Owen's death (to continue off-topic here... hockey is close to wrestling anyway.. no, really!)

thanks for the info. I wasn't aware that the Flames owned that team now; I thought Brett still did.
