I saw this on the local news. I'm sorry, but I laughed and laughed. More proof of how horrible I am. There was an exhibition game between the US and Canadian teams in Montreal, a tuneup for the upcoming world championships. This poor woman started to sing the US national anthem twice but stopped both times, forgetting the words. But it gets worse...

QUOTE
After apologizing to the crowd, Marcil left the ice and headed back towards the dressing room - to a smattering of boos from the Quebec Coliseum crowd of 7,166 - presumably to get the words.

But when she returned to the ice, the carpet slipped out from underneath her, causing Marcil to fall hard. After lying motionless on the ice for a few seconds, she left on her own and television replays showed a despondent Marcil being consoled in the hallway adjacent to the ice surface.
They ended up playing the game without any anthems being sung.

They're showing this on all the sports highlight shows up here. They're calling it the "highlight of the night." biggrin.gif

Footage of Marcil will be added to the seemingly endless string of those who've had troubles (to put it kindly) with the National Anthem of various countries.

And Joe, if laughing at this makes one a horrible person, count me in. Reading about it made me laugh; if I see footage of it (c'mon, ESPN!!) I'll be rolling on the floor.

It was on Sportscenter last night. Don't know if they'd show it again...but there must be somewhere online where it can be seen.

CTV's Website has a video of the embarrassing moment. The link is in the right column.

I have now seen this hilarious clip about 3 times. It was on my local news last night and I saw it on "Headline News" this morning. That woman had to have been so damn embarassed. The fall was almost funny, if not for the fact it must have hurt like hell. frown

It's been replayed several times here too, and made it to TSN's sports-related 'bloopers of the week', which also included footage of Tom Brady trying to sing during a recent guest appearance on 'Saturday Night Live' (he looked great, and actually didn't sound too bad either).

The hockey game itself was secondary to the anthem incident, but it was mentioned that Yan Stastny of the US team was warmly applauded by the crowd at Le Colisée. He is, of course, the son of Peter Stastny who played for the Quebec Nordiques.

I actually feel bad for her. This can't be easy for her to handle.

You mean they didn't play the Hendrix version  The words are so much better and make me feel like I am represented as a citizen of the United States. No apologies to Francis Scott Off Key.

I read a story in my paper this morning where the singer, Marcil, said the "pressure of the game" got to her in trying to sing the US anthem. Also she was invited, and did show up to sing the US anthem without a hitch on "Good Morning America" yesterday.

About Marcil's performance of the Anthem on 'Good Morning America,' the AP wrote:

"By the dawn's early light, Caroline Marcil finally finished on national TV what she started at a hockey game."

Can't be easy to work the phrase 'by the dawn's early light' into most news stories. wink

It just goes to show you, if you screw up in this country you get rewarded! tongue.gif

I felt bad for the singer when I heard the story on the radio. I imagined how humiliating she felt. I didn't laugh at her.

She spent two days in New York City. She sang the anthem on Good morning America Sunday and maybe she was there also Monday (?).

She had her 15 minutes of fame (thanks to the crazy carpet). In the Montreal Gazette there are some support letters from Americans.

You think talking with Charlie Gibson and/or Diane Sawyer is a reward?? It's my idea of purgatory! biggrin.gif
