Well they must be planning on hockey coming back before the '07-08' season, as after more than 6 years of aborted plans and on again, off again negotiations, Newark city officials and the Devils signed an agreement to build a new 18,000 seat Arena, that is scheduled to be completed in time for the '07-'08 start of season. The city will pay $210 million, and the team will pay $100 million toward the cost of the building.

Newark must be really desperate. The Nets are presumably going to Brooklyn. That would leave the Devils by themselves. Would the Devils draw better than they have in the past? I'm not sure -- although it would be easier for me to get a train to Newark than to try to get to the Meadowlands, so I could see myself going to Flyers-Devils games. But especially with the lockout hurting business in the long term, and with the fact that Newark isn't exactly a hockey hotbed, I'm not sure.

With Joe being willing to attend an occasional game in Newark, that leaves the new arena with only 17,999 available seats. wink I'm rather unclear on this new arena--with whom would the Devils share it? Arenas designed for hockey alone seem to be the definition of white elephants.

Without the NBA team, they'll have to rely on concerts, other events, college sports, and the like. Seems risky to me. If the arena in the Meadowlands isn't torn down or something, how many musical acts will play there instead of Newark, and vice versa? Surely they won't play both arenas.
