The former Red Sox pitcher is making a pro comeback with the Brockton Rox of the independent Can-Am League. He's doing well enough to be on the League's All-Star team.

I saw some mention of his return on the sports news a while back. The anchors joked that he was trying to challenge Julio Franco for the 'oldest player in baseball' award.

My guess is he was named to the team because he's a name. They want to sell tickets. Here are his stats through 7/9/05 from the league's website:

He's 1-2 with a 4.27 ERA in 7 games, all starts. In 46.1 innings he's allowed 51 hits and 22 earned runs, and opponents are hitting .277 off him. He struck out 27, while walking only 5. This tells me that his fastball is probably unimpressive enough that the hitters are just swinging away, and often swing and miss at breaking pitches. Of course, hitters in that league aren't exactly the best around. Yet they're still hitting .277 off him.

Here's the Oil Can on the offical team website reminiscing about the snub from the MLB All star game in 86......

Too bad he can't give it up; I thought from the thread title that it was either an article about him managing or some very bad news. I wish him the best.

Joe, the Brockton Rox are pretty successful, they are, and have been filling the stadium pretty good, and this was before Oil Can arrived. The Rox are a well known smaller team around here.
