The Penguins have traded ALEXEI KOVALEV, DAN LACOUTRE, JANNE LAUKKANEN, and MIKE WILSON to the Rangers for JOEL BOUCHARD, RICO FALA, MIKAEL SAMELSSON, and RICHARD LITNER. Yes, it's a salary thing for the Penguins who are (again) facing bankruptcy. They will save $1.84 million this season alone and, by getting rid of Kovalev, could be saving about $7 million in the coming years.
Another big salary for the Rangers--as if they have been successful with all their other huge salaries...

In essence, the Rangers bought Kovalev for $4 million (they are paying Pittsburgh that amount as part of the deal). I couldn't tell you anything about any other players involved in the deal.
I thought the Rangers were weak defensively. How does Kovalev help that? It boggles the mind.

Feb 10 2003, 09:22 PM
There's $4 million to help Mario balance his books. wink
I guess the Pens have given up any hope for the playoffs. The Rangers may still be hanging on by a thread, and Kovalev might score some goals alongside Lindros and Holik, but I still don't think Glen Sather should have "guaranteed" the fans any playoff games at MSG this year. The eventual return of Brian Leetch from injury will make more of a difference to the team. Anybody know if Mike Richter's coming back this season?
I think the teams most pleased with this deal are the Leafs, Devils, Flyers, etc., those teams with enough payroll to have dealt for Kovalev, but each now content in knowing that he didn't wind up with a real contender from the East.

Some time back they announced that Richter would be out for the entire season.

It looks like Gary Bettman likes to flex his muscles when it comes to approving or not approving trades. Unlike his counterpart in baseball who allows teams with ample cash to get whatever they want, Gary prefers to get involved allowing some teams to lose their stars while not others.
According the the NY Post the Flyers were ready to get Satan and Zhitnik from Buffalo when Bettman said no. Of course it was ok for the Rangers to Kovalev. The link to the story follows

The Flyers denied this story. And the Post writer has a reputation for printing all kinds of rumors that turn out to be false, so I don't think it's true.

The most surprising point raised by Larry Brooks in the NY Post column was his contention that Gary Bettman stated on Monday that "the NHL has outgrown Pittsburgh"....in light of the financial despair being suffered by franchises in Buffalo, Ottawa, and Calgary (among others) I would be quite surprised if Bettman actually made such a bold statement -- particularly after he "allowed" the SALE of Kovalev and his three comrades to NY for virtually nothing in return (excluding the $4M cash, of course)....then again, it should be fairly easy to verify whether the commissioner actually uttered those exact words or not.
In lieu of the commish not vetoing the obvious salary-dump "trade" by the Pens, could Bettman be potentially acting in a manner to help the NY Rangers in the hope that having a successful team in the league's biggest market will somehow benefit the NHL in their upcoming labor negotiations, television contracts/ratings, etc?....the only thing that seems to be a certainty at this point is Bettman's repeated claims that come 2004 the league will be in for a LONG, drawn out work stoppage that will rival none other in professional sports -- and how many franchises are still in existence following the completion of that work stoppage (in 2005? 2006?) is anyone's guess.

The trade deadline looms...
A former Flyer, defenseman Dmitry Yushkevich, comes back to town--from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for the Flyers’ fourth round pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft and seventh round pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. According to Bob Clarke, Ken Hitchcock wants 8 defensemen on the roster and among the 7 they have now are a couple of rookies.

Owen Nolan needed to get out of San Jose. That team had not been a good fit for him these past two seasons. I wouldn't doubt that he'll benefit from not wearing the "C" on his chest. It's amazing how many good players have a hard time handling whatever responsibilities come from being Captain.

Nice debut for Owen Nolan as a Leaf, potting two goals in a 3-3 tie with the Canucks. When Nolan's name was announced prior to the game, the fans made it sound like the second coming!

With two days left any last minute predictions on any blockbuster trades to be made? I wonder if my Flyers will pull the trigger since they tend to play great one day and lousy another.

Mar 9 2003, 12:02 PM
Not a blockbuster, but the buzz filtering around Staples Center at Saturday's game was that if the Kings and Aaron Miller don't reach a deal today (Sunday) he's gone by Tuesday. There was talk he was going to wind up with the Avs, but their signing of Bryan Marchment put the kibosh on Miller heading to Colorado. And, to think the Avs got Marchment for virtually nothing--just some draft picks.

Well, you have the Marchment deal as Adam mentioned, plus Toronto gets Glen Wesley from Carolina for a 2004 2nd-round draft pick. Then you have the Flyers, who managed to obtain...Claude Lapointe from the Islanders for a 5th-round pick. Woo...hoo?

Dallas also picked up F Stu Barnes from the Sabres in the deal. The Stars sure are loaded for the playoffs now! I'm surprised to see Lyle Odelein going to Dallas; I thought the Bruins might pick him up, since their defense is so weak. Maybe they'll deal for the Kings' Aaron Miller tomorrow?

More trades:
The Devils acquire D Grant Marshall from Columbus for a conditional 2004 draft pick, and RW Richard Smehlik from Atlanta for a 2003 4th rond pick...
And the Flyers strike with an actual deal of importance! They get RW Tony Amonte from Phoenix for F Guillaume Lefebvre, 3rd-round pick in 2003 and a 2nd-round pick in 2004. (There were reports that the Flyers were trying to get Mike Ricci from San Jose. I don't know if that'll happen now.) I think they're not counting on much from Simon Gagne--he keeps trying to return after injuring his groin, and he keeps re-injuring it. Now they're saying he'll likely sit the rest of the regular season.

I was kinda shocked to find out about the Amonte deal. He has a fairly large contract from Phoenix tha the Flyers will have to pick up. and honestly, he's been woefully underproducing in Phoenix. But then again, look at the team he was on. Maybe being back on a team with JR again will help him out in the long run.

The Kings may not have kept Mathieu Schneider--there has been NOTHING OFFICIAL reported yet--but they did sign Aaron Miller to a four-year, $14 million deal. The deal with Mattias Norstrom--$14.5 million--sigened just last September sort of boxed in the Kings when dealing with Miller.
The general consensus is that by the trade deadline, Schneider will be in Detroit and Bryan Smolinski will also be moved. In fact, his agent says the Kings have made no effort to re-sign him: "Bryan had a good span in LA. He's played well, he wants to stay here, he's happy here. However, we don't feel the Kings feel the same way. Therefore, it might be a good time for Bryan to move on."
OK, the LA media just announced the Schneider move to Detroit (God, LA radio hates hockey) but I am still waiting to hear about Smolinski. As for "having the hots" for Schneider--not me; Ian and my Alex are a different story...
Just heard that Smolinski is now a Senator--bankrupt but in a good position to win the Cup (which they can then hock...)

Hard time concentrating at work when I am flipping to every trade update up until 3.00 p.m.
At least, I got my news of the day (Anson Carter, Edmonton Center, to the Rangers). Unlike Ranger management, I have always liked Dvorak. Carter is a great player. But is more offense necessary (yes, I know we only scored one goal against Florida last night) when our defense continuously (like the last 5 years) leaves the puck in their defensive zone. I am mixed on this trade. I really want some defense!

Yeah, way to slack off, Adam! (I hope you at least signed that Office Stranger's birthday card.)
So, I bumped into the Leafs today and, man, do they look OLD! They're already carrying a veteran roster, with 14 players logging a "+30" (Belfour, Corson, Roberts, Lumme, Mogilny, Svehla, Fitzgerald, Domi, Sundin, Green, Reichel, Hoglund, Renberg and Kidd). Now they roll the dice and pick up Phil Housely (who just turned 39), Doug Gilmour (39), Glen Wesley (34), and Owen Nolan (30), in exchange for a ton of young players and future draft picks.
The Leafs have a great chance of taking it all this year but they're pretty much betting the bank on it. Once 2004 rolls around, it'll be rebuilding time (just when any new NHL/NHLPA agreements take effect). Torontonians will be mighty pissed if their Leafs don't bring home the Cup NOW with this stacked line-up of veterans, because after this year it might be another long wait for their parade.
That said, can't wait to hear the ovation Killer Gilmour'll get next Tuesday, the first time he steps back onto blue and white ice. LOUDY!

I expected to see Doug Gilmour on the tube tonight when the Leafs were here to play the Flames. But I tuned in rather late...apparently Gilmour was injured during the second period and did not return; hopefully it wasn't too serious. He's certainly had a long career; I remember when he played for Calgary back in the glory days of the late 80s.
The third period was quite entertaining, with three goals scored in as many minutes...our cute cuddly captain Craig Conroy (how's that for alliteration?) tied the game at 2-2; followed by a goal by TO's not-so-cute Tie Domi; then Iggy tied it up again, forcing overtime and a 4-3 Flames win. Of course, they won't be in the playoffs but it's nice to see them playing better lately.
Dean McAmmond was traded back to Calgary from Colorado, but for some confusing reason he was not allowed to play tonight; not sure what that's all about.

It seems he's been ruled ineligible! What is this, NCAA basketball??
QUOTE
NEW YORK (AP) -- Calgary Flames forward Dean McAmmond was ruled ineligible Friday for the rest of the NHL season because of a technicality concerning his trade from Colorado.
Calgary reacquired McAmmond at the trading deadline Tuesday for a fifth-round draft pick. The Flames originally traded McAmmond to Colorado on Oct. 1, three days before the waiver draft, as part of the Derek Morris-Chris Drury deal.
NHL rules state a player traded four weeks before the waiver draft cannot be reaquired by the same team within the same season.
Flames general manager Craig Button has said it was a mistake to have dealt McAmmond in the first place. Button underestimated the chemistry McAmmond had last season on a line with Jarome Iginla and Craig Conroy.
McAmmond missed the first 23 games this season with a back injury and never got into rhythm with the Avalanche.
He had 10 goals and eight assists in 41 games. Last season for Calgary, he had 21 goals and 30 assists in 73 games playing with Iginla and Conroy.
McAmmond will be able to practice with the Flames and will be paid for the remainder of the season.

Thanks for the explanation, Joe; although I'm not clear on what the term 'waiver draft' means. Even though McAmmond was traded from a playoff-bound team to one that isn't, he did seem happy to be back here. However, I'm sure he's not thrilled to find out he now has to sit out the rest of the season.
Joe in Philly
Mar 15 2003, 02:52 PM
I'm not up to speed on the exact details, but...just before the beginning of each season there is a draft held...each team can protect a limited number of players on its roster, and the remaining players are made available for the draft. There are rules about who must be made available--for example, young players of a certain age/experience level are exempt; also, I think you can protect only 2 goaltenders. Teams have the option of selecting the available players or not selecting anyone at all. If you lose a player to another team, you can then take a player/players off the "available" list. A number of teams will put players who haven't been performing well but have large contracts on the "available" list hoping that some other team will take the contract off their hands.
As an example, here's a link to a Flyers' press release announcing their
protected and available lists from this past October.
There's some discussion about the rule that disqualified McAmmond in the Flyers' Usenet newsgroup--it seems the rule was added after some shenanigans involving none other than Bob Clarke. I did some research at a website called FlyersHistory.com.
In 7/89 the Flyers traded Shawn Cronin to Winnipeg for future considerations, which by itself is nothing. But then...on 9/28/89 they sent Pete Peeters and Keith Acton to Winnipeg for future considerations. The waiver draft was held. Then, on 10/3/89 they got Peeters and Acton back from Winnipeg in exchange for Toronto's 1991 5th-round draft pick (acquired in a prior deal) and future considerations (which turned out to be cancellation of the prior future considerations they got from Winnipeg).
So in essence, they traded a player and a draft pick to Winnipeg for nothing, except it helped the Flyers keep more players on the protected list.
