Or something.

Jim Allen,
I agree with you. The Angels have looked better than any other team in the entire playoffs. If I am correct they have averaged more runs than any other team, their defense has been astounding, and their pitching (which was supposed to be their major weakness) has overachieved!! I think they will beat the Giants/Cardinals winner.

Don't tell us you are having doubts, JimA?!? ....just because the franchise has given you, MikeOC, and all those other loyal Halos supporters 41 years of disappointment is no reason to be cynical now (disappointing is not the right description, I know -- calling the Angels franchise a disappointment is like saying the Titanic was a "slight boating mishap"....heartache would begin to be more accurate).
After the way they've played in the postseason, I'd be tempted to say bet the mortgage on the Halos (but even I'm not quite that foolish)....I AM convinced that this is a team of destiny and after Kennedy's heroics Sunday I don't think there's anyone in the lineup who hasn't emerged as the hero sometime throughout this postseason.
The ANGELS will win it in 6 GAMES (it doesn't matter whether it's the Giants or the Cards although St. Louis' chances are looking pretty slim)....and with the A.L. having the home field advantage this year, won't it be sweet to see the Angels win it all at home in the Big A? (yeah, I know, it's "Edison International Field" now but I still call it the Big A -- btw, what's the deal with "international" in the stadium name? it sounds more like an airport than a ballpark -- or perhaps they are expecting teams from Japan to be on the schedule soon?).
btw, I agree with you 100% about Salmon, Jim....even with all the young cuties (Eckstein, Kennedy, Washburn, Fullmer) surrounding him in the celebration (which those idiots at Fox deprived the rest of the country from seeing after they immediately switched to SF last night) I was happiest for Tim because of ALL the losing seasons he has endured in Anaheim, turning down opportunities as a free agent to leave for more money and play elsewhere, along with the fact that he has always come across as one of the classiest guys on the team IMHO -- never a hint of scandal or bad press....KEEP THE FAITH!!....THE ANGELS WILL WIN 4 MORE GAMES IN 2002 (with or without the help of the Rally Monkey)!!

Gamecock, I just roll my eyes at all this talk like "Making the World Series wipes out 41 years of disappointment" etc.
NO, NO AND NO. Since I don't really believe in redemption or salvation or any of those kinds of things, the Ghosts of 1982, 1986 and (for me the killer, the one that ended my strong emotional connection to the Angels) 1995 are constants, like the smog or traffic.
Edison International is the name of the energy company that The Mouse sold the naming rights to. I was hoping Edison would pull an Enron last year but alas. A lot of people call it The Ed, of course, but since I've been going to games there since 1978, it'll always be the Big A to me.
From some of the signs that I saw at Pac Bell tonight, this is going to be one of those tedious San Francisco vs. Los Angeles things. It's all one-sided of course, the
Baghdad By The Bay--Herb Caen must be rolling in his grave these days--crowd is the only one that cares, but it'll be portrayed in apocalyptic terms like: The alleged sophistication of San Francisco against the alleged shallow glitz of Los Angeles. Never mind that Orange County is closer in spirit to Omaha, Nebraska than Hollywood, it'll be fun to see all the people in 'Frisco work themselves in to a tizzy about El Lay while we down here just yawn.

I'm also going with the Angels in 6. Yeah, they're the team of destiny but more than that, they're a damn good team that is scorching hot at the right time.
You know, it occurred to me a little while ago that while this all-California series has its merits, just think of the titanic battle we could have had if the Atlanta Braves would've won the NL pennant: Angels vs. Braves. Disney vs. AOL-Time Warner. Michael Eisner vs. Ted Turner (or Steve Case, if you prefer). Mickey Mouse vs. Bugs Bunny!

I know better than to go against this year's home-field disadvantage pattern: Giants in 6 (or less). Can you imagine what kind of mental panic Anaheim may go into, dealing with the When to Walk Barry Paradox for the first time?
The Angels CAN win, of course -- if they continue to score 8.6 runs per game, and Benito Santiago returns to mortal stature. But what if Kent gets hot? SF may shock the Monkey a la Peter Gabriel (uh oh, better not give the Fox Sports sound crew any ideas).

That would still be a big step up in cleverness from the lame-ass-ness of the FOX coverage thus far. (I'm convinced Kevin Kennedy & Jeannie Whats-her-name must have blackmail pictures of Rupert Murdoch doing it with a goat.)

I'll pick the Giants in 6. They have been getting the key hits and the pitching has been good.
By the way, check out Monday's LA Times. They printed a list of teams with the longest wait to get to a World Series. The Angels have waited 41 years (correct), but make reference to the St. Louis Browns/Baltimore Orioles and say it was a 43 year drought.
I may have misunderstood the reference, but I think they are incorrect. The St. Louis Browns made their only WS appearance in 1944 and the Baltimore Orioles won the 1966 WS in 4 games. That is a difference of 22 years. Any insights on this ?

I don't know what he expected. When things are going well, local sportscasters are really nothing more than cheerleaders for the teams they cover. That happens in every town. Same for the writers as well.
Jim Allen

Agreed, RGMike. At least when Mark McGwire had his kid there during his home run record push, it was more a "I want to share this with the most important person in my life"; with Kile's kid, it felt like manipulation on a Spielbergian level.
I wish the Series were starting tonight--both teams had such great momentum and baseball is such an every day sport that it seems a shame to throw that away because of TV schedules.
Re: the bitter St. Louis writer's article: Kenny Lofton is a piece of work isn't he? I can see sportswriters going "Whew! That's a good article. It didn't descend in to the kind of misty-eyed nostalgia for a Midwestern agrarian past that makes me retch (see: George Will) or trade on highlights of the sport that mostly happened 40 + years ago (those Mastercard commercials where the most recent event shown is Kirk Gibson's 1988 homer). I think he overstates the case for demographic diversity, but overall, a good article.
Baseball, in my mind, pisses on all other sports from a great height but it's truly distressing and alarming at how the sport is run and presented these days.
A co-worker sold his 4 box seat season-tickets for $1,100 EACH ($4,400 total for the math challenged) for Game 1. As he said, that paid for all his playoff tickets.
MikeOC, I'll never see you at Buzzer's again because you're going to have to sell your car to buy a ticket.

Although I'm apparently in the minority here, I agree completely with RGMike....I thought the Cards were blatantly USING the five year old son of their deceased teammate to THEIR callous advantage for public relations purposes and to generate more sympathy from the fans nationwide -- if that isn't shameless I don't know what is....I recognize that Mrs. Kile could undoubtedly have objected to the team "using" her young son (I have yet to read any comments from Darryl's widow about this, which I would be most interested to hear her opinion about) but you certainly CAN'T allow a five year old to decide for himself because it would be "fun".
I don't doubt the genuine sympathy and love that the entire Cardinal organization has for the Kile family but I, too, found it to be very unsettling and my immediate reaction was that once Kannon Kile becomes an adult he will look back at these tapes and cringe that a five year old was taken advantage of so shamelessly for the public relations benefit of the franchise....such a decision made by Walt Jocketty and Tony LaRussa is INDEED shameless in every sense of the word.

Anyway, referring to something Jim Allen said a few posts ago. The wait between the LCS and the World Series is simply following the MLB scheduling format, and not related to TV per se. If both series would have gone 7 games, then the ALCS would have ended on Wednesday and the NLCS would have ended on Thursday. With one day off for travel, that means start the World Series on Saturday. As far as I know, that is the way it has been scheduled for a number of years now.

Actually, it is my understanding that the World Series schedule is set up that way (for about the past decade if I'm not mistaken) for the benefit of BOTH television ratings and MLB....this way Games 1, 2, 6, and 7 are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday nights with the pivotal Game 7 (if necessary, of course) set up for Sunday, which is the most heavily watched night of the week as far as television viewership is concerned -- coincidentally, Saturday has historically been the LEAST heavily watched night of the week for quite a few years now.
This schedule factors in two off days for travel (between games 2-3 and 5-6 even if both teams are in the same city as took place in 2000 with the "Subway Series") and assumes there are no rain outs, of course (highly doubtful in Southern California -- as for SF, who knows?)....what many people forget is that in the 1986 World Series following Game 6 (which featured the Mets miraculous rally capped off by Buckner's error) Game 7 was rained out the following night in NY and the Red Sox opportunity to lose another World Series (with Bruce Hurst on the mound blowing a 3-0 lead) was postponed a day.
When these networks are paying outrageous sums of money to MLB for the television rights, they basically control what days and times the games will be broadcast (no W.S. DAY games EVER including weekends now) in order to maximize ratings, viewership, and most importantly (to them) advertising revenue -- something that Selig and his cronies do not object to, despite the fact that many young kids are asleep well before ANY W.S. game is completed which is highly unfortunate and may come back to haunt the sport in years to come.

Ump 25, I can understand what you're saying but for this cynical sceptic of the media and entertainment--which, obviously, baseball is--it just smacked of exploiting a family tragedy. That was probably not the Cardinals intention but Fox played it up for all it was worth and at the end I felt like I'd been trapped in the middle of a Hell called Spielberg's E.T.. As Redsoxbreath wrote, it could have been done in a much more low key manner.
And we're mocking Kannon's name? Just wait 'til the kid gets to grade school. It'll make us look like saints in comparison. Parents should think of the consequences of giving their kids names like that--my nephew was named Harley (not after the bike, but after the last name of a family friend) and his dad's last name was Glassburner (!!) and he grew to kind of resent both names after being teased so much about it. Hopefully they didn't give Kannon Kile a middle initial that starts with a K........
And MSUBulldog, I know about the scheduling reasoning but my point was that I just want the series to start NOW. The Angels were so fired up on Sunday that I wish they'd played Tuesday to carry over that fired-up-ness.

Thanks, Jim Allen, for leaping to the defense of us cynical skeptics. Obviously part of the appeal of message boards is the ability to make smart-ass comments that are not meant to be taken seriously beyond the moment. And humor, clearly, is subjective. (Ump25 should hear what I think of athlete names like Plexico.) The kid's name just reminded me of the Carl's Jr commercial (not sure if it's seen in all parts of the country) where an older, traditionalist guy is in a hospital maternity ward bemoaning the names people give their kids these days. "Whatever happened to names like Bill... and Hank?" Cracks me up every time.

I seem to recall that even the 19th-century championship matches (between the NL and American Association?) were called the World Series... just part of American hubris in regarding ourselves as "the world" (even more ubiquitous then). I recall John Cleese doing a bit on the Tonight Show in recent years, comparing the WS to the World Cup, "where we actually invite teams from other countries."
Kile kid in dugout, no problem. TV showing him twice every inning, exploitation.

Erm, right, the topic. Jarrod Washburn v. Jason Schmidt on Saturday. The Angels claim that they're going to pitch to Bonds to get him out. If Bonds parks one in the 2nd deck in his first at-bat on Saturday, that will probably change. Of course, I say: drill him in the ribs to back him and his body armour off the plate, but after seeing how Kenny "You Wouldn't Have Lasted 2 Pitches With Don Drysdale On The Mound" Lofton reacted in the NLCS, that might not be a go.
