Steve Y. will have knee surgery and will miss the first couple of months of the coming season. Considering the depth of the Red Wings, his absence shouldn't mean a less than stellar season for the team.

I don't know Adam but I think this is Yzerman's last. He has a few cups, all sorts of club records and a shoo-in for the hall of fame. It's weird you know. I can remember having a crush on him in elementary school. To think he's getting too old to play, is a cold-shower reminder of my own mortality :- )

I agree with you that this will probably be the final season for Steve Y. When Darren Pang caught up with him just after the final game of the Stanley Cup series & asked if he was going to retire, Steve's response--he's tired but can't afford to retire--was truly insightful & genuine. For whatever it's worth, I think this will be the final season for lots of future hall-of-famers. Can't see Roy, Mario, Messier, Shanahan, Amonte, etc. playing too much longer.

I'm really bumbed about Roy because I have yet to see him play live. I just moved down to Atlanta and the Avs are not even coming. That means I will either have to catch them in Chicago or with the Hurricanes. I still can't believe Hasek is gone. Shanny got five good years left in him but you're right about the rest of your list.

What about the Florida teams--Panthers and Lightning?

Trevor,
The Thrashers are right here in town, that's why I'm going to see them. If I'm going to travel, I want a good game. But on another note, the Thrahsers are going to be a lot bette this year. Remember we had this year's rookie-of-the-year and the runner up.

I agree with Zman, the Thrashers are going to be better next year (considering they couldn't get much worse...). They acquired some middle-range talent, which is the best we fans can hope for (Shidnik, MacEachern, Klemm...). As the kids get better, and hopefully they stay here, then more players will be interested in playing here. It may be the end for many venerable veterans this year, like Yzerman, Roy, Damien Rhodes...

Stevie had his surgery Friday and it was a success! There is the possibility that he might be out until even mid-February! brrrrr.....

Today in the Detroit Free Press, Stevie said that if he has a lot of pain when he gets back from recuperating from his surgery then he's going to hang up the blades and get out of the game (well, playing that is).
Steve's a great guy and I would hate to see him retire, though I can understand why he would. Even with a healthy knee, he wouldn't be able to play forever.
Stevie has a very large part in getting the Red Wings back on the map and into the elite team they are today. (Detroit, I think, was the only city in ESPN's poll that listed the NHL number 1 in sports watched) He's considered a demigod here in Hockeytown, and I'm sure there would be an Yzerman shrine erected somewherein town for fans to make pilgrimages to.
I love you Stevie!

Interestingly enough, Las Vegas currently has Detroit listed to win the Cup next year right now.

Stevie Y was the first athlete I ever had a crush on and the main reason why I watched hockey when all the other poor black kids in Detroit were rooting the Tigers on to the World Series in '84. His beauty and grace off the ice got me hooked to watching what happened on it.

Steve is a gentleman all the way around. He's been one of the best spokesmen for the sport of hockey. It's surprising that someone as kick ass on the ice as Steve is so soft-spoken and gentle off it. He's very sweet to talk to.
