The NHL is experimenting with the ice color to see if it might help enhance the viewing experience, both on TV and in the arena. It will be used in a game in Buffalo between AHL teams Rochester and Cleveland.
QUOTE
The Sabres offered to try it and, after some experimentation, settled on painting the sheet in what they call \"electric powder blue.\" To offset the new colored surface, arena officials decided to make the blue lines fluorescent orange, which is also the color used for the faceoff circles.
The center line, normally red, is now dark blue.
NHL officials will attend the game to study the changes and how the new colors might affect the play or change the viewing experience. The Sabres will also produce a game video that will be sent to the league offices for review.
What's next, a glowing puck?

Call me old fashioned, but this is the stupidest thing I have heard of all year! What the NHL needs, is to settle the current situation, get back to doing what they do best, play hockey, and maybe get Sydney Crosby the next big superstar drafted and I think everything else will fall into place. Just my 2 cents worth.

Foolish me. I thought the changes the NHL would consider to improve the game would involve changing aspects of the game itself--two-line passing, no-touch icing, shootouts during the regular season, goalie equipment--and not the color of the ice! Maybe they could coordinate each team's home ice with their name or home sweaters--the RedWings could have red ice, Blackhawks could have black ice (very dangerous to drive on,) my Kings would be purple, etc. But it won't change the game itself & that's where they should be focusing--well, that and getting the NHL players back on the ice.

Sounds pretty gimmicky to me too. And rather ironic that instead of eliminating the red centre line (or 'center' as you guys spell it

) as has been suggested for a long time, they want to change its colour?

Ive seen the blue ice in Long Beach, Ca earlier this season. It wasn't so bad. The only problem was after the ice gets sscraped up it's hard to see the blue lines. Perhaps making them orange helps but I don;t like the idea of calling the D-men orange-liners!!!
