Just the 5th player to switch leagues and win the MVP in his first season in the new league.
Runner-up: Gary Sheffield.

Not surprised by Vladimir Guerrero being named AL MVP but am surprised the voting wasn't closer. Good arguments could have been made for Sheffield and thought he would have been closer.

I think the voters were just very smart to realize that Sheffield and Ramirez were both part of two of the best offensive lineups in baseball. Guerrero didn't have nearly the big name supporting cast that the other two had and therefore, he deservedly won the award. Factor in his performance in the last month of the season and his superior defensive skills and the deal was sealed.
I'm not sure Sheffield was even the most valuable player for New York. I'm surprised Tejada's huge RBI count didn't get him more votes, though again, Melvin Mora may have had an even better season.
