I just caught a headline off msnbc.com. I guess there will be a formal news conference later today, but a confidential source said that Lemieux will anounce his retirement for the second time later Tuesday. I have been wondering about this all season so far. Truly, another sad day for not only the hockey fans in Pittsburgh, but hockey fans everywhere, in my opinion.

Though not completely unexpected, I'm still surprised that Lemieux is making this announcement now; I figured he'd find some way to complete the season. ESPN Radio speculates that this will allow Mario to spend "all his time" on the financial aspect of the Penguins (read: trying to keep the team in Pittsburgh.)

It seems the heart problem was too much for him to consider returning to the ice -- according to the AP article he's still having episodes of an irregular pulse and he's experiencing side effects with his medication. He may undergo surgery to correct the problem. Pat Quinn had the same surgery and told Lemieux he felt much better since the surgery.
Imagine the numbers he'd have if he didn't have so many health problems throughout his career.

Mario Lemieux was in the hospital Monday for a procedure to normalize his heart's rhythm--was it the overuse of '70's disco at the Olympics that altered his heart's rhythm? wink He's expected to be released Tuesday.

Damn, I really hope this condition settles down for him, I really do. Anything more on the new arena plans for Pittsburgh anyone? I haven't heard anything.
