Since I was over at the US College Hockey site, I saw this article posted for all NHL fans waiting for the lockout to end. Hopefully you will enjoy.

The NHL fans guide to College Hockey

Since there doesn't seem to be an end in sight to the lockout, my plan is to try to see at least 1 game of every conference this year. Anyone want to come with me? C'mon you know you need a hockey fix.... wink

Here are the games I'm definitly exploring attending:

11/12/04 - 11/13/04 Bowling Green vs. Nebraska-Omaha. In Omaha (I'm insane I know biggrin.gif )

11/26/04 - Rensselaer Holiday Hockey Tournament: Sacred Heart vs. Air Force, Robert Morris vs. RPI

12/28/04 - 12/29/04-- Florida Hockey Classic (Estero FL): Cornell vs. Boston College, St. Cloud vs. Maine

1/21/2005 or 1/22/05 -- Ohio State vs. Michigan

2/11/05 -- Cornell @ Princeton (closest game to Philly and DC this year... wink

What day of the week is 2/11/05? And where is that 11/26/04 tournament being held?

You also have the advantage of having my favorite AHL team in your own state (which is not very big), the Hartford Wolfpack (New York Rangers AHL affiliation). How could you miss out on the brilliant goaltending of Jason LaBarbara just to see the University of Nebraska at Omaha? wink
Denver Fan
As much as I love my Avalanche, they really won't be missed much since we have the National Champ DU Pioneers. The pioneers are great and populatity will surge without the Avs to overshadow them.

We also have a great minor league hockey team here in Loveland the Colorado Eagles.

But, yes NCAA will benefit from the NHL lockout and there is some great hockey action to be had in college.

Is that the one known as the "Everblades" Classic? Cute nickname and a great lineup. Although hockey in Florida still doesn't sound right to me!

Joe in Philly -- off the top of my head, that Rensselaer Holiday Hockey is probably held up in Troy NY (home of RPI) or just across the Hudson River in Albany.

We're excited about Badger hockey this year! Getting tickets to see them play Notre Dame (The Skating Irish?) in January at the Rosemount Center (or whatever-the-hell-they-call-it-nowadays Arena) outside Chicago (not that I like going back to the Midwest in winter ...) .. but a college hockey fan has to do what he has to do.

And Denver Fan -- I may be back in Wisconsin the last Friday in October, which is the date of the first game v. Denver. I would definitely try to get over to Madison and get a ticket to that!

btw -- I was hoping the the impending NHL lockout would have meant fewer NCAA players declaring for the draft early -- but it really didn't. Wisconsin, for example, lost its great soph. defenseman Ryan Suter, who signed with Nashville -- Dany Heatley had of course done the same a few years earlier.

ON WISCONSIN -- SEE YOU IN COLUMBUS!

OK, DC Bucky........this is it, you're chance to meet up with me at the FF this year in Cowlumbus whether our respective teams make it or not!

I have tix, too!

DU, who won last year, are not picked to do well in the WCHA this year. We shall see. In HockeyEast, BC gets all the press, Maine is picked #2 and the the bu pukes are picked third. Should be a great season, regardless.

Maine hosts NoDak this weekend for two games, starting Friday. I'll be listening online. Maine had an easy go of it last Sunday at UVM, winning 7-1 with 7 different goal scorers, I think. It won't be so easy this weekend, I fear.

Enjoy winning over the buckeyes this weekend, dc.

Well the early USCHO poll has Maine picked #2 in the nation while BC is #3.

Good luck against the hated Fighting Sioux!

Wisconsin opens against little Mercyhurst, but within 3 weeks will be playing the meat of the WCHA schedule -- Denver, the Sioux and the Golden Rodents. I'm hoping for a fast start to the season.

For college hockey folks:

College Sports TV will tonight begin airing a regular "Friday Night Hockey" program with two powerhouses facing each other: North Dakota vs. Maine. If you get College Sports TV, enjoy!

Thanks Adam. I have never even heard of it? I am guessing its mainly available back east???
Joe in Philly
I think it's something that's mainly on satellite and perhaps digital cable. It's not listed on Comcast's listing of channels in Phila. although their site does list Fox College Sports Atlantic, Fox College Sports Central and Fox College Sports Pacific in their digital listing.
Adam
I checked with my digital cable provider--Adelphia--and they don't carry College Sports TV but are looking to add it within "the coming years." The service representative said it is mostly available through satellite providers.

Well I did get to see some of the UND/Maine game online through a UND internet site. Got a little bit of both the second and third periods. From what I saw, this was a good test for each college's special teams. As usual with an early season game lots of silly penalites. Maine even got called on a "diving" penalty! eek! But the 5 on 5 action wink was pretty damn good.

I missed the OT penalty shot though!!!! sad.gif

Final score: North Dakota 4, Maine 3 OT

I hope to catch some of tonight's game online as well.

**edited to add ** Oh yeah, Cattledog.... Montoya is a SIEVE! Northeastern 4, Michagan 2. tongue.gif

HAPPY DAY!!! I just wanted to annouce that I will be seeing my first hockey action of the college season tomorrow! biggrin.gif I will be attending the matchup between the defending NCAA champs, the University of Denver Pioneers as they take on the Northeastern University Huskies in the "Wild Card team's" town. Will be bringing the camera to take some pics should they let me. No matter what I'll take a couple suitable for posting and post a little recap after the game.

Sorry Joe, no locker room shots, but the pictures can be viewed here: Denver vs. Northeastern

The game itself was a battle of special teams. All six goals were scored on a power play situation. The NCAA is really cracking down on the obstruction/interferrence now. I think all but about two of the penalties for both teams were obstruction minors.

Not too many fans at the game as you will see from the pictures. I asked around to see if that was common. Sadly, it was. sad.gif Too bad because Northeastern plays a scrappy game emphasising their speed. They had lots of 3 on 2 rushes and 1-timers that criss-crossed in front of the Denver goal. Denver was physically larger than Northeastern and their players powered themselves almost into the crease, getting more penalties called on NU as a result.

Tickets were $10. Not bad at all, and there was no need to call ahead for them. Only game that might be a sellout would be against Boston College. I encourage you all to go see a game there if you are ever in Boston. Plus, you can get free stuff too! biggrin.gif I got a magnet with the 2004-05 schedule which I placed on my fridge just below the Eagles schedule from the Bike Stop.

Next weekend I'll be heading up to "beautiful" Schenectady, NY on my continuing quest to see teams from all six NCAA D-1 conferences. Union (ECAC) will be hosting Bowling Green (CCHA). Since I was heading up there to see the parents anyway, now I won't have to travel to Omaha. wink

Individual game tickets for Cornell go on sale Wednesday. Keepin my fingers crossed to get tickts for any Saturday game. Perhaps some people would like to tag along?

Notre Dame's coach is former Flyers captain Dave Poulin. wink

Got a chance to watch parts of the last two Minnesota-North Dakota games the last couple of nights. Hoping that Fox Sports will also show some MSU games, so I can keep up...
MichaelMaineFan
Just a couple of notes on the attendance for the Northeastern game. Usually not full at the old arena, but vocal. The 'coffin' at Providence is usually not full, either.

My Maine Black Bears are struggling these past few games. Lost to St. Lawrence (tough team, should do well this year) 1-0 on Friday night and bounced back to win 4-3 on Saturday. More goals, lads, MORE goals....Howard can't stop 'em all!!!!

Wisco is hot and have picked up from where the team left off last season. Should be a top 3 in the WCHA this year. Hmmmm, did I just jinx Bucky? OOPS!

Keep those cards and letters coming on college hockey!

PS: GO (RED) SOX!

Tonight's feature matchup for those with CSTV is Boston College vs. North Dakota at 8pm. Hopefully, both teams will keep the penalites to a minimum to make the game exciting. Could end up being a real shootout as both teams have a lot of offensive talent.

Tis also the night the Ivy League and the ECACHL begin their season with the traditional Hahhvahhd (sucks) vs. Brown (blows) matchup. For me, I will be heading "up the line" to New Haven to see Yale (swallows) take on the CHA's Alabama-Huntsville Chargers. Hopefully I can get a standing room ticket for the game as it is the home opener for Yale.

Season Tallies so far:

Number of games seen: 2
Number of non-power play goals scored: 0
Total conferences seen: 4 (HE, ECACHL, CCHA, WCHA)
Cost of all tickets: $21
Pictures taken with digital camera: 32 (not all posted though)
Number of people who have asked me, "Hey, You're wearing a Canucks Jersey! Are you from Vancouver?" 3

DCBucky, you should be concerned about all the teams in the Badger Showdown this year. All three teams are under .500 for the year and will probably stay that way. No matter who your guys beat, it won't help Wisconsin's PWR standing for the NCAA's because they are sub .500. Losing (since there can't be a tie) would drop Wisconsin's PWR and poll ranking significantly. Even a close game against any of the three could do that.

Also, the vastly overrated Vermont pussyboys got spayed by Hahhhvahhd (sounds of lugie being hawked and spit) last night eek! When my Cornell Big Red take the Florida Hockey Classic this month, beating Boston College and then St. Cloud State ('cause Maine sucks tongue.gif ) you'll see them back in the top 10.

Here's a nice promo for Minnesota State games this weekend:

"... fans are invited to bring stuffed toys for sick kids and chuck them onto the ice of the Midwest Wireless Civic Center after the first period of Friday’s game with Wisconsin. Fans participating in the Teddy Bear Toss will receive a free ticket to an upcoming Mavericks game (excluding their wildly popular series with Minnesota) while school officials will collect all of the toys and have MSU student-athletes distribute them to young patients at Immanuel St. Joseph’s Hospital in Mankato during the holiday season. Badger fans who want to get in on the act are encouraged to bring stuffed Buckys.

This is from INCH Magazine -- no not INCHES!

Feb 11, is still open on my schedule for the Cornell v. Princeton game in "beautiful" New Jersey. tongue.gif Anyone around interested in attending?? I'll make an inquiry about tickets sometime this week.

LETS GO RED!
Joe in Philly
I might be interested if there's a way to get there and back without extreme difficulty -- I know the NJ Transit train from Trenton to NYC has a stop at Princeton Junction. I don't know where that is in relation to anything else up there.
BPT-336
Here's the deal ya'll. Tickets are still available for the Friday 2/11 game at $9 a ticket. There's a service charge, so I'll order tickets for anyone who wants to go. That way we're sure to sit as a group (or a couple if it's just me and Joe eek! tongue.gif )

I plan on buying tickets sometime next week once we figure out how many people are going. Anyone else interested..... anyone.... anyone..... Bueller??? tongue.gif OK Cattledog & Pat125, (yes I'm calling you out!) are you guys interested or will you be in DC/travelling that weekend?

As far as train travel goes, there is a train that travels from the Princeton Campus area to the Princeton Junction station. I asked the ticket office people and "The Ducky" runs about every 20 minutes. Not sure on a cost for it or if you get a ticket/pay on the train. Looking into that more.
Joe in Philly
I just checked the schedules. In order to get home Friday night I'd have to catch the 11:10 pm train from Princeton to Princeton Junction to get a train back to Trenton in time to catch the last SEPTA train southbound to Phila. at 12:10 am. This is because SEPTA sucks.

So my next questions were what time is the game itself and how close is the arena to the train station at the campus? Doing some checking on the web, it's at 7 pm so there'd certainly be enough time to see the game itself. It wouldn't seem to lead to a whole lot of time for intoxicating post-game beverages, however...not to mention anything before the game, depending on when I leave work that day. I'm trying to check the campus map but Princeton's website is being quite uncooperative at the moment. eek!

Okay, got to look at the map -- it looks like the train station is within walking distance of the rink. This trip looks like it's do-able for me. biggrin.gif

Cool -- the Frozen Tundra of Lambeau may get even frozener. The Badgers are considering playing a hockey game there next season, probably the Hockey Hall of Fame game against another WCHA team. It would be played early in the season (mid- to late-October) -- so timing will depend on the Packer's home schedule.

Michigan Tech is a likely opponent, since I think they played one of their "home" games last season at the Resch Center in Green Bay. And a bunch of their fans could make the easy drive from the U.P. But I'd rather see a more prominent opponent like the Goofs or the Susies.

(unfortunately, the Badgers might be the only home team to do well at Lambeau this fall sad.gif )

Link to story

In the meantime big doings in Madison this weekend as the Badgers host the Goofs a try to stay in the running for the MacNaughton Cup. Hopefully wins would help our PWR (but I don't pretend to understand that!)

Cornell 5, Princeton 0 biggrin.gif

Well Adam, I'll let Joe give the full report as he can give an unbiased view of the game. We of the Faithful appreciate you (And I'm sure LA Queen Brad Chartrand '96) channelling good vibes for the game.

Cornell fans outnumbered the Princeton's fans about 2-1 it looked like. Pretty sad actually unless the home crowd all sold their tickets and made a profit. eek! Bring on them Yalies! biggrin.gif
Joe in Philly
Cornell was in complete control from beginning to end. Princeton never had a chance. As BPT stated, the crowd was thoroughly pro-Cornell and they all very much enjoyed themselves, especially with the chants after Cornell goals. My favorite was at the end of the chant, after calling the goalie a sieve, where they all point at him and yell, "IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT! IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT!" wink It reminded me of the Simpsons episode where Bart ran away at Thanksgiving and he imagined returning home to apologize but everyone turned on him and blamed him for everything (Homer: "It's your fault I'm bald!" Grampa: "It's your fault I'm old!" Maggie (with no mouth movement): "It's your fault I can't talk!" Uncle Sam: "It's your fault America has lost its way!"). Alas, I was informed that their chant at the goalie dates back to the 60s, so they didn't steal it from the Simpsons.

So it was a fun evening, both the game and seeing BPT again. After the game we found a bar and had a beer and shared some tales and some Outsporter-related gossip. biggrin.gif wink
Joe in Philly
The little booklet that passes for a program in Princeton lists their season schedule and results thus far. Their second game of the season was a 5-5 tie at home against an interesting opponent: Alabama-Huntsville.

Think about this. They have hockey somewhere in Alabama. eek! biggrin.gif
BPT-336
Well Denver Fan's team, the University of Denver Pioneers (and defending NCAA champs) have taken over the #1 ranking in this weeks Division I hockey poll after a win and a tie against DC Bucky's vastly overrated Wisconsin Badgers. tongue.gif

My Cornell Big Red move up one notch to #4 this week from their four point weekend. Highest rank this year so far for The Red. biggrin.gif

Next week highlight games: Joe/Susan in Philly's new favorite hockey team -- the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers travel to play CHA league leader the Bemidji State Beavers for two games. A-H has played two fewer games, but trails Bemidji by 5 in the standings. A Beaver sweep (ok now you can giggle! tongue.gif ) will just about clinch top seed in the CHA season ending tourney.

Notre Dame and Michagan get a little home and home action. Probably best if they both just stick to football. tongue.gif

Holy Cross and Sacred Heart (currently 1-2) in the tight Atlantic Hockey standings will be battling Friday night in Fairfield (really Bridgeport but they don't want the stigmata wink ) I'll try to get tickets for that. Should be entertaining.
DUhockeyFan
Denver played two great/tough games against Wisc last week and then made a huge comeback win over Duluth last night, showing that they are deservedly ranked number one. Now for the biggest games of the year next weekend. Bring on them tigers.

Legend has it that half the PhDs in Alabama are in the vicinity of Huntsville, no doubt due to Huntiville's being the home of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center and the Redstone Arsenal.
