Teams have got to stop changing their logo so much.
The Blue Jays (I assume it's theirs) logo does NOT work for me at all.

Wow, that Blue Jay looks awfully angry, doesn't he? I thought Candians were supposed to be so nice. wink

Just the ones in Montreal, not Toronto. wink wink , Canmark!
The Brewers logo doesn't look any different to me. They should have incorporated the sausage beating from last year.

yeah, I don't think the Brewers logo is new and any changes to the Royals logo (such as the baseball in the "background") is very minor....I agree with others who have said they don't like the new Jays logo either.

I actually like the Blow Jays' logo. There's only so much intimidation that a baseball team with a bird as its logo can put you through.
Has anyone here ever had a run-in with a blue jay? Those birds can be vicious!

Well, sure, the Padres logo incorporates the waves, outdoorsy stuff being so big in San Diego, but it kind of makes their name kind of moot. I prefer the old friar swinging from the fences:
Of course, balding men would object.

When I was in Toronto in December, I happened to be walking with a friend near Skydome. I remember commenting that this was like the fifth time in about 12 years that the Blue Jays had changed their logo. They have only been around since 1976, and yet, since that year, they have had more logo changes than there have been Canadian Prime Ministers. The last logo with the studly Blue Jay holding a baseball bat wrapped around the letter "T" was pretty damn cool. Enough already!

The Padres are also repeat offenders in the logo-change area. And its not just the logo that's changed - that team has gone through several color changes. I grew up remembering them in that god awful brown and orange. Then they went navy and orange. Does the new logo mean they are now going powder blue?
And their brethren up the road in Anaheim went from blue to red. Just plain silly!
Pick a color and stick with it.

AUTiger in LA mentions the horrific colors the Padres have used over the years. Keep in mind they were owned by father of McDonalds, Ray Kroc. The colors refelcted mustard and catsup. When I lived in San Diego, I often hoped the Ham Burgler would become their mascot! And what does their swingin' Padre (I always liked him as their mascot) wear under his robe? Ah, for the days when we could see Brad Ausmus and Steve Finley up close & personal--gives one a warm feeling all over.

I love logo changes and new uni designs. The Royals have had that version of their logo for at least a year now, but they still use the "crown" logo and other variations. I really like the new Padres logo, but it really makes their name meaningless.
I don't like it when teams change their colors. A tweaking of the colors, such as Oklahoma's periodic changes between Red & White and "Crimson & Cream" are okay, but not a complete color change.
Don't know why, but I've always liked graphic design changes - things like magazine&newspaper layouts, company logos and letterheads, tv show title graphics, tv news sets, etc. etc. There is something to be said for consistency, but I like things to be updated regularly.
By the way... Where did the Royals get their name? Oh, nobody asked, but anyway... For over 100 years, Kansas City has been host to an annual event called the "American Royal", which started as a livestock show and grew to become a 8-week-long period each autumn, with livestock shows, rodeos, equestrian events, parades, barbecue contests, and even a debutante ball. That name led to the use of a crown for many other city traditions and events, such as giant crowns that were used as downtown Christmas decorations. And of course we are all familiar with the crown logo of Hallmark, a company that is based in KC in a huge complex that includes hotels and a mall called Crown Center. The one-time NBA team in KC was called the Kings, with a crown logo not unlike the Royals. Blah blah blah... is anyone listening anymore? Sorry to get off-track here.

And yet, of all team logos that really need a queer makeover, the Expos get overlooked again. But I guess the design of their logo is the least of the Expos’ problems right now...
Adam & maxallen, thanks for the cool info about team colors and names. Love that kind of trivial stuff!
Jim Allen, I like that old Padres logo, too. That is one swingin' man of the cloth! (Although tennisbudcali might object to the sandals and full-frontal toe exposure; see the "Should Be Shot" thread. wink ) If they want to incorporate the ocean waves idea into the design, why don't they just put the old friar on a surfboard? Hang ten, bro!

I like color and logo changes too. But then, I work in advertising, so any change in colors and logos is additional income to the industry! wink
One team that is really active on these changes is the Houston Astros. They've had soooo many color changes and logo changes it's hard to keep up. My personal favorite (and I so wish they would bring them back) was the "rainbow" uniforms. So colorful and truly distinctive. They still sell them in the Astros stores due to their popularity.
The Arizona Diamondbacks seem to have an identity problem. You never know which uniform design they're going to wear. How many designs do they have anyway?

I heard a discussion about uniforms on the radio this morning and they mentioned the Pittsburgh Pirates from the late 70s. Remember the black and gold mix-and-match sets? One day black top and gold pants, one day all gold, etc. wink

Don't kid yourself -- their new logo means nothing more than they are moving into a new stadium and are trying to fill seats with the "New" Padres in the "New" stadium. Would love to think that it's deeper than that, but it's really not.

Joe in Philly--don't forget the black and gold-striped caps that accessorized the Pirate uniforms.

Neither Milwaukee's nor Kansas City's "new" logos inspire much excitement for me. I thought a beer bottle or a photo of Laverne & Shirley might be appropriate for the Brewers' uniforms, but I like George's suggestion even better!
As for the Blue Jays' new logo, I'm not crazy about it either, but of the four team crests displayed in Canmark's posting, I think it is the most interesting. That mean-looking bird is probably meant to convey a certain toughness which Toronto may need if it ever hopes to finish above third place in the AL East! Or even above fourth place...those other birds from Baltimore, despite that mild-looking Oriole logo, could be a contender in '04 with their expensive, high-profile acquisitions.
This is the third logo change in six years for the Blue Jays (now often referred to as simply the Jays). But prior to 1997, the same logo was used for the team's first 20 years in MLB. I have a ball cap from that first edition, I wonder what it might be worth to a collector?

(now accepting offers). Notice that the maple leaf logo has been dropped from the latest version. Personally, my favourite was the the one they just changed, with the bird holding the bat, and I wish they had stayed with it.

The Angels have changed logos and colors and uniforms so many times since I've been a fan it's hard to keep track. And heck, they changed their name, how many other teams can claim that?
Back in the California Angels days, I liked the A with the yellow halo around it. I actually liked the blue pinstripes with periwinkle *giggle* uniforms but that Disney-designed logo was awful. My first reaction when they unveiled the latest red-tinged uniforms was "It's the Texas Rangers".
So, when are the Yankees and Red Sox going to redesign their boring, oh-so last millenium logos and uniforms?

Me personally, I like the new Jays logo. I've never liked any of the logos that they had after the original one.
As far as the Padres go...I think the water in the new logo has to do with the new ballpark opening up in downtown right near the waterfront in the Gaslamp Quarter.

I don't mind the bird--it's the J attached to it that I don't like.
