This was a large article in my sports section this morning:

With the NHL closed for business, minor league hockey is thriving.
I understand attendance in the AHL has jumped 8% to an average of 5,484 fans this season from 5,079 a year ago. Three AHL franchises, Chicago, Philadelphia and Edmonton share markets with NHl teams too. Wolves attendance is up 24%, the Philadelphia Phantoms is up nearly 20%, and Edmonton in its first season in the AHL, is averaging 8,000, fourth highest in the league.

Unfortunately Spokane is bucking this trend, and attendance here is down 9% so far this season. From an average of 6,293 last season to 5,611 this season so far. But, its not hard to figure out why either. For most of the first half of this season Spokane has been mired in the cellar of the U.S. Division, and is still so, being 4 points out of 4th place. Nowhere to go but up baby!
