The long anticipated season opener for Spokane takes place tonight at 7:00pm at the Arena. The Chiefs have won their last 3 season openers, including a 5-2 win over the Kootnaey Ice last year 5-2. A large crowd is expected, and again, the opponent will be the mighty tough Kootenay Ice, who since beating Spokane last week 4-1 in their season opener, have gone on to win three, yes three, games all by shutouts!! Their top goalie Glass, has an incredible g.a. of 0.49, and a save percentage of .982!! So far, only two goals have been scored against the Ice in 5 games. Fortunately for Spokane, they got one of those goals, but its clear, the Chiefs will need a fast start tonight to take the pressure off our defense and goalie, and keep the large crowd in the game.
In the Central Divison, Calgary is sitting atop first place. (Yeah Marc!).
Currently in the West Division there is a 3-way tie for first between Everett, Portland and Seattle, all at 2-1.
GO CHIEFS!!!!
hockeyTom
The Spokane Chiefs were victorious in their home opener last night in front of a crowd of 8,500 at the Spokane Arena!! Yes!!! I didn't go, I was at home listening to the game on my radio. Trailing 2-0 deep into the second period, and unable to get anything going in front of the Ice's goalie, Glass, the Chiefs got a goal late in the second period to make it 2-1. Then, in the 3rd period Spokane went on a flurry to score 3 goals, which put the obnoxious Arena crowd into a frenzy. Before this game, as I had pointed out Kootenay had won 4 straight games, 3 by shutouts. The Chiefs find themselves on the road next week at Vancouver, and Portland, before coming home to play arch-rival hated Tri-City next Saturday in Spokane. I will be there, I swear!! Go Chiefs!!
Adam
Congratulations to the Chiefs--and enjoy the game next Saturday. In the post you mention you listened to last night's game on the radio; aren't the Chiefs game televised by a Spokane station? When my Kings play eastern teams on the road, I often listen to them on radio--it's amazing how good a hockey game is that way!

~Adam
hockeyTom
Adam, no, they are not locally telvised. The only time they have been on local televison was about 4-5 years ago, when Spokane hosted the Memorial Cup, and Portland was our opponent. That was too cool, being able to watch them on the telly.
hockeyTom
Last night Spokane scored first and went on to shutout arch rival Tri-City 3-0, in their second home game before, 7,300 partisan fans at the Arena. Chief goalie Jimmy Watt was right on the money all night long, but give credit tothe Spokane "D". In the first period the Chiefs outshot the Americans 17-5, and went on to outshoot them 55-29 overall!! I am particularly impressed with the speed of the Chiefs. They have a pretty fast turnaround game. What surprised me was there were only 3 major fights during the entire game. This is bound to change as the teams become more familiar with each other down the road. Late in the first period with Spokane up 1-0, and after a scrum, Tri-City had received an additional 4:00 penality, and with a 4 on 3, Spokane was not able to capitalize. But with the victory we now move into a tie for 4th place in the U.S. Divison. Everett plays at Tri-City tonight in Kennewick, Wa. which should be a real interesting game. Spokane now has 3 more home games with which to continue the momentum. Go Chiefs!!!
hockeyTom
My Spokane Chiefs beat a tough Lethbridge Hurricane team last night 6-3 to even their season record at 3-3, and move into second place in the U.S. Division. Woo HOOOOOOOO!!!! The game was tied 3-3 going into the 3rd period, when Spokane poured in 3 third period goals to seal the victory. In the first period, after Spokane had scored their second goal to take a 2-1 lead, Lethbridge pulled their starting goalie in an odd turn of events. Next up for Spokane is Vancouver on Friday. Yours truly just may be there. Spokane now a perfect 3-0 at home in the Arena. biggrin.gif
Adam
Enjoy the game against Vancover this Friday. May your Chiefs make it 4-0 at the Arena.

Tonight Spokane, winners of 3 straight at home, take on the streaking Vancouver Giants at the Arena. Its "garage sale" night tonight with the Chiefs selling off Chiefs souvernirs and memorabilia from seasons past. What a great idea. I won't be going tonight but will be listening. Something has gotta give with these two teams. Lets Go Chiefs!!!! biggrin.gif
Adam
Love the "garage sale" promotion idea. I'm going to remember that for when the NHL comes back and suggest it to my pal in the Kings pr department. I think getting stuff from seasons gone by (old sweaters or pucks signed by one-time Kings) would be great!

Go Chiefs, make it 4-0.

~Adam
hockeyTom
Go for it Adam, let me know what the uppers thought of this idea. wink
tphutch
Sorry Puckman - looks like my Giants won out.

It's amazing the support that the Giant's are getting with no NHL. Attendance is up about 3000 people per game!
hockeyTom
After losing a heartbreaker to Vancouver Friday night at the Arena, the Chiefs ventured down the road to Tri-City last night and pasted the Americans 9-5!!! Woo Hoo!!!! Spokane was down 2-0 in the first period but came back to score nine straight goals, 6 in the second period alone. Spokane is now in 3rd place in the U.S. Divison and a perfect 2-0 against Tri-City who was picked to be a very strong team this year. Way to go Chiefs. Tp: I read where the Ice cooled off your Giants last night in o.t.You have agot a great team this year. Whats the attendance been like there?
hockeyTom
With 33 seconds remaining in overtime the Chiefs score to beat Portland, 2-1 last night and improve their record to 5-4. They are 4-1 at home!!! Good job Chiefs. Next casualty will be the lowly Kamloops Blazers tonight. Go Chiefs!
hockeyTom
Yours truly is going to the game against the "Loops" tonight. I will have a report tomorrow morning. Go Chiefs Go!!!!! biggrin.gif
Adam
Have fun & cheer loudly for me!

Well its about time. Somehow my Chiefs found a way to salvage a 2-2 overtime tie, their second in a row, but this time against the mighty Memorial Cup Champs, Kelowna Rockets. This is the first time in two years, they have not lost to Kelowna! The W.H.L. Commissioner was also in town to partake of the game he had some interesting commnets about the state of things in hockey. Of course he said its paramount to get the NHL up and running again. He did say that the cities of Vancouver and Calgary seem to be benefitting a bit from the NHL situation in terms of incresed fan support in those 2 cities. He said also, the W.H.L. is looking for ways as well as the NHL to increase scoring in the league.
Oh, I forgot to add, Spokane Coach Al Conroy was suspended for one game (last night's) along with the head coach of Prince George after a fracas after the game here on Wed. night. Spokane also had 2 players on suspension, same as P.G. and both clubs were fined $2,500 by the league. Maybe Coach Conroy needs to sit out a few more games? Under his direction, the Chiefs hadn't won against Kelowna in 2 years. rolleyes.gif

Good for your Chiefs finally gaining a tie with the Rockets. As for Conroy's fracas, is there some way to blame it on Ron Artest? wink

Well the "cardiac kids", got the job done last night down in Tri-City. The Chiefs played their 3rd straight overtime game in a row, but managed a 3-2 win in this one last night. Yesss!! Anytime you beat Tri-City, especially in their building is a good night. Chiefs now embark on an Eastern Canada road tour where they will play 5 games in 6 nights next week. Keep it up Chiefs, now just 2 points out of 4th.
hockeyTom
Spokane now has put two back to back road victories togther on their Eastern Canada road tour. The night before they had 3 short handed goals, en route to a 7-4 drubbing of Moose Jaw (love that name!), and then yesterday had 2 more short handed goals to totally blowout Regina 5-0! Spokane is now 1 point out of 4th place, and next plays the Silvertips in Everett Wed. night before coming home. Keep it up Chiefs!
Adam
Five short-handed goals in two games!! As we all know, when a team can score during a penalty kill, they're living right!

~Adam
Joe in Philly
Sounds like an unusually agressive penalty killing strategy...of course, that can also backfire and result in goals allowed. Or maybe they just had two big games against two not-so-good teams? wink
Marc
Well, 'not-so-good' is an understatement especially for the Moose Jaw Warriors...I didn't realize just how bad they were until I looked at the WHL standings today. Ten points (including just two wins) in 31 games, with 150 goals against, gives them by far the worst record in the league. But the three short-handed goals in a single game by the Chiefs is certainly impressive all the same. I don't think I've ever seen more than two SH-goals scored by one team in an NHL game...if there are stats on this, I haven't found them yet.

Meanwhile, the Hitmen set a new regular-season attendance record on Sunday with over 16,000 at the Saddledome; I think that figure would be the envy of quite a few NHL teams. Unfortunately they lost in the final minutes to the Saskatoon Blades, who are on top in our Conference. It was 'teddy bear' day and the fans tossed over 13,000 stuffed animals on the ice. These were collected and are being distributed to needy kids and to patients at the Children's Hospital.
hockeyTom
Marc, I read this morning where Moose Jaw has fired their Coach, former Spokane Chief Assistant Coach, Perry Shockey. They had to do something.
That attendance for your Hitmen is impressive. Good job Calgary. Like you, we also have a "teddy bear toss" game. Usually every year it seems the Portland Winterhawks are the opponent.

Now, if Raze were reading this he'd undoubtedly chime in with, "Hey, I heard they had a similar promotion in Philly called 'Battery Night'" -- but he's not here so I beat him to it. HA! biggrin.gif
Adam
16,000 in attendance!!! Very impressive--I've been to Kings games that didn't get that number.

And to go along with Joe's "battery toss night" alternative to the "teddy bear toss," in Detroit they've got "beer cup toss" night and here in LA we get "beach ball toss" night.

Well I have good news and bad news regarding my Chiefs. The good news is we have moved into 4th place tie with Tri-City as we earned one point in a 4-4 overtime tie with the Swift Current Bronocs last night. Tri-City lost their game. The bad news, is that Spokane blew a 3-0 lead they built up in the first 6 minutes of the game last night! Currently the Chiefs are missing 3 key defensemen due to injury or other reasons. Next up tonight is the first place Everett Silvertips. It would be so great to beat them here tonight.

Last night here the Chiefs probably played their best 60 minute hockey game of the season, including yet another short handed goal, and 3 power play goals in bombing 3rd place Portland, 7-4. We were hoping that Everett would put away Tri-City who is currently in 4th place by one point. But alas, the Am's beat Everett 3-0. Dag nabbit!! So, we are still in 5th, by 1 point. There is so much parity this year in the WHL, or at least in the US Division. ON any given night, anyone can beat anybody else. sad.gif Next opponent for the Chiefs is a home and home series this weekend with the Kootenay Ice.
hockeyTom
In the well-its-about-time-category, my Spokane Chiefs have finally won their way into a 4th place tie with Tri-City in the U.S. Division, after beating the Americans 3-1 down in Tri-City last night for their annual New Years Eve hockey game. biggrin.gif In addition, they finally were able to beat the defending Memorial Cup Champs-Kelowna Rockets here on Wed. night, 5-4 for their first win over the Rockets in 20 previous ties. Its about time. Tonight the Chiefs are up in Vancouver B.C. for yet one more critical game against the Giants. A win will lift Spokane into sole possession of 4th place. Lets go Chiefs!!!
hockeyTom
Well the tie for 4th place was oh, so enjoybale for 1 measely day. The Chiefs got beat by Vancouver 5-2 last night and coupled with Tri-Citys' win over Portland, means we are in the cellar, again. sad.gif
hockeyTom
Yours truly and new friend attended the FRiday night game in Spokane against Everett, in which the Chiefs prevailed 5-2. Only the second time this season Spokane had beaten Everett, and it was the most totally complete game I think I have seen my Chiefs play this year so far. The defense/goaltending/forechecking/hitting was non-stop all night long, and it was great seeing what the team can do when they put their mind to it and play 60 complete minutes of hockey.

Then last night arch rival Tri-City came to town. First sellout of the year, 10,571 loud vocal fans saw Spokane blow a 3-1 lead, but managed to avoid the loss in a 4-4 overtime tie. The Chiefs are still 2 points ahead of Tri-City now in 4th place, with 2 more big games this week against first place Seattle, and then always tough Kamloops, next Saturday night. GO CHIEFS!!

A sellout in Spokane, with more than 10,000....very nice. And congratulations on seeing a victory Friday night. We had similar weekends--I attended two Ice Dogs games (yeah!!) Friday night, we faced the Pensacola Ice Pilots for the first time ever and beat them soundly 4-1, in the process reaching 51 points for the season (matching last year's entire season total) in just 38 games. Very impressive. Saturday, the Dogs faced the Wranglers from Las Vegas, who defeated the home team 5-4, in a shootout! It's amazing the Ice Dogs even got the game to OT since they played only one decent period, the third. The Wranglers outplayed the Dogs throughout the game and never let up the pressure. The Ice Dogs, who have a return engagement with the Ice Pilots later today, are now one point behind Bakersfield for first place in the West Division. Attendance at both games was approximatly 4500, which is pretty good--if I could find someone to go with, we could increase attendance by 1. wink

~Adam
Marc
Good to hear you guys are managing to get your 'hockey fix' despite the sad situation in our NHL! Congratulations to the Chiefs and Ice Dogs (love that name) on their respective wins. I still haven't been to a Hitmen game this year but it's definitely on my 'to do' list. In fact, this past weekend would have been ideal for me as I didn't have to work, but as luck would have it, the Hitmen were on the road in BC (and won both their weekend games, giving them a respectable third-place in the division). Actually on the weekend, there was the Esso 3-on-3 Pond Hockey tournament here, featuring some NHL alumni. I almost went to it, but decided instead to attend my first Roughnecks (National Lacrosse League) game. I was very impressed with it and intend to go again. Certainly there are some similarities to hockey, with lots of physical contact, although the 'ice' is green and the players don't skate! smile.gif

Things are starting to get really interesting in the WHL right about now. Marc's Calgary Hitmen are just 3 points out of first place in the Central Division, with the Red Deer Rebels, just 2 points back of Calgary. And in my U.S. Division, things are even tighter! Seattle is still in first, but Portland has caught up with Everett now for a tie for second place. The Silvertips have really, really been struggling now and are only 1 game above .500!! My Spokane Chiefs are now tied for 3rd place with Tri-City, still. Spokane has one huge game tonight with Kamloops here. We have not beaten this team in 2 years! Its time for the Chiefs to remove this monkey from their back. Go Chiefs!!!!
And Go Hitmen!!
hockeyTom
Dag nabbit! I knew I should have gone to the game last night, rather than listen to it from home. My Chiefs fianlly got a huge monkey off their back with a big 4-2 win over Kamloops here in front of 7,000, and coupled with Tri-City's ot loss in Portland, means Spokane is back in 4th, but only by 1 point. Two huge home games next weekend, against Everett on FRiday Night, when the theme is "70's Night", and then Tri-City again on Saturday Night, with "Buck Night" where most of the food, popcorn etc. is $1.00. That will be yet another sellout..guaranteed. Go Chiefs!!!!
Adam
Love the use of "dag nabbit!" I hope you get over missing seeing the important victory in person in time to attend either 70's Night or Buck Night. If the Chiefs Buck Night is anything like the one the Long Beach Ice Dogs had, it'll be well worth attending--just to see people wandering around with four cokes and six hot dogs! The Ice Dogs face Fresno later today & I'm still looking for someone to go with....but will probably attend stag.

~Adam
hockeyTom
Wished we lived closer Adam. sad.gif Have fun at the game. I do plan on going to the Everett game (70's Night) hopefully with new boyfriend in tow. wink

You bet, the Central Division is very tight! After the weekend games, now just four points separating the first and fourth-place teams, with the Hitmen still in third. I caught the third and OT periods (on radio) of the Sunday afternoon game with the Brandon Wheat Kings at the Dome. Unfortunately, Brandon won the game 3-2 by getting the puck past our new goalie Justin Pogge with just three seconds to go in overtime! But I guess an OTL is as good as a tie. The Wheat Kings apparently have the best power play and best overtime record of any WHL team. BTW, I see the Saskatoon Blades have already clinched a playoff spot, with 20 games to go.
Adam
With a 5-0 victory on Sunday over the Fresno Falcons--the second victory over them this weekend--the Ice Dogs now have 60 points this season and are in first place in the Western Division. As the score indicates, the Dogs played a great game--particular during the second period, when everyone seemed to be flying down the ice. Now they head out on the road for a long stretch--next home game is February 23, which is Ice Dog sweater night--guess who's going?? wink

Big, big win for the Chiefs who beat (first place) Seattle again, 3-2 last night in Seattle. Wooo-hooo!! Only 2,700 people showed up at Key Arena. That is so sad. Anyhow, Chiefs now 3 points up on Tri-City, who is in last. Yours truly will be at "buck night" with friend in tow on Saturday night, which will be the 2nd sellout of the season. I just may go tomorrow night as well against Everett. GO CHIEFS!
hockeyTom
Very sad news to report today. In front of 10,020 partisan Spokane hockey fans, my tired, uninspired Chiefs lost to arch rival Tri-City here last night 4-2, to once again, fall back in the cellar of the U.S. Division. Chiefs were playing their 4th game in 5 nights. sad.gif Myself and new friend did and yelled everything and every time we could to somehow inspire the hockey club, but to no avail. Well, there is now no place to go but up.
Adam
Sorry to read of the recent loss, but it is heartening to see that over 10,000 of the faithful turned out for the game; wasn't it 70's night?? If so, did they play lots of disco or did anyone show up in costume??

Well the see saw battle for 4th place in the US Division is still on track. After a horrible weekend, in which my Chiefs lost two big games at home, they went out on the road and into first place Seattle last night, where they handed the T-Brids their 4th straight loss in a row. Wooo-Hoooo!!! The win coupled with Tri-City's loss to Kootenay last night, put the Chiefs back into 4th place for now. I see where Marc's Calgary Hitmen beat Vancouver 3-2 last night, and they are now just 2 points out of second place in their division. Go Chiefs and Go Hitmen!!
hockeyTom
Two overtime games last night between my Chiefs and Marc Hitmen. But, the Hitmen won theirs.Congrats to Marc. My Chiefs fell to Portland 4-3. Heartbreaker!! The loss coupled with Tri-Citys win against Everett puts Spokane and Tri-City in a tie for 4th once again. This is unreal....tonight going to the Arena with friend to see if the Chiefs can somehow find a way to beat Vancouver, something they have not had much luck with this season. Go Chiefs!!!
Marc
Another OT game tonight for your Chiefs, Puckman, but happily this time they came out on the winning end. Not so for the Hitmen, they lost to Kamloops at home (in fact not a good night for Calgary sports teams, as the Roughnecks lost badly to Toronto in NL lacrosse sad.gif ). Just 15-18 games left for the WHL teams before the playoffs. I hope to finally go to a Hitmen game next weekend, when they play here against the Kootenay Ice, which has the best record in the league.

On a sad note, I guess I can add this here because of the connection to both the WHL and NHL...Louis Sutter has passed away at the age of 73 in Viking, Alberta. As most hockey fans know, he had six sons who played in the NHL and who continue to have strong ties to hockey. Brent Sutter is presently the coach of the WHL's Red Deer Rebels; Darryl and Brian (although not very busy this season sad.gif ) coach the Flames and Black Hawks respectively. Duane, Rich and Ron are all involved in various capacities with NHL teams as well. Louis is also survived by wife Grace and son Gary (the only one who did not play in the NHL).
