Yes it was Marc. Finally, Spokane goes into overtime and comes out a winner. Me and friend were thrilled with this game and its outcome. Spokane spotted a very tough talented Vancouver team a 2 point lead, only to end up a 3-3 tie in the end of regulation. Spokane was even awarded a penalty shot with about 4 minutes to go in regulation but was not able to capitalize. The Refereeing was absolutely horrible we both though. Horrible. But with a minute to go in overtime the Chiefs get the win. 7,500 people blew the roof off the building!!! Plus Tri-City lost to Portland, so we have another 2 point bulge in 4th place. Chiefs play their 4th game in 5 nights today, in Everett. They are going to be one tired bunch. Way to go Chiefs!!!
hockeyTom
Big, big win for Spokane last night down in Portland where my Chiefs bombed the Winterhawks 7-2, after falling behind 1-0. The big win coupled with Tri-City's loss to Kelowna puts a 4 point bulge between Spokane and Tri-City going into tonights huge game down in Tri-City between my Chiefs and the Am's. Go Chiefs!!!! I am looking forward to hearing about Marc's experience with his Calgary Hitmen tonight up in Calgary. Go Hitmen!!!!
Adam
They scored seven??!!?? That's a real offensive explosion! I'm looking forward to Wednesday when the Ice Dogs make their return to Long Beach.

~Adam
Marc
Puckman, I'm sorry to see your Chiefs lost on Saturday, but keep the faith! It looks like it's shaping up to be a real nail-biter between Spokane and Tri-Cities for that last playoff berth in the US division.

Well, I finally got to my first Hitmen game last night. Our boys were playing the league-leading Kootenay Ice (not to be confused with Adam's Ice Dogs smile.gif , these guys are just the Ice). Their team is based in Cranbrook BC, and their royal-blue jerseys have a logo which looks very much like the label of a great beer that is brewed in the Kootenay region!

Anyway, the score was only 1-0 for the Ice well into the second period, but they eventually went up by two. No scoring until about 13 minutes into the third, and I was beginning to think this would be one for the Hitmen's 'L' column. But then suddenly Calgary got some life and scored three goals within four minutes to take the lead. We had an excellent view of the pucks getting past Ice goalie Jeff Glass (who played for Canada in the recent world junior tournament) as we were just a few rows up behind the net. But alas, with just five seconds left in the game, the Ice scored on Justin Pogge, sending it into OT, ending in a 3-3 tie. Overall a good game, although (not surprisingly) the puck-handling skills of the players were quite noticeably less proficient than what we are used to seeing in the NHL. The Saddledome has been a busy place all weekend, with Roughnecks lacrosse on Friday, and back-to-back Hitmen games Sat and Sun. The attendance last night was just under 12,500. Hitmen lost this afternoon to the Saskatoon Blades, but are still in third place in their division with 71 points.

Related notes: When I went to buy my tickets last Wed for the Hitmen game, I saw a giant-sized version of the Stanley Cup. Just in front of the Saddledome ticket office there was this big guy wearing a cylinder wrapped in aluminum foil to represent the Cup, and a sandwich board which read: "1919: Spanish Flu, 2005: Greed". He was being interviewed by a couple of local media types. I knew there had been only one other occasion in history when the Stanley Cup was not awarded, but wasn't sure which year or for what reason. Apparently the terrible flu epidemic in 1918-19 resulted in many NHL players being too ill to play. Fortunately, hockey isn't always about greed...this long weekend up in Edmonton, the world's longest hockey game is still in progress, with the goal of raising funds for cancer research.
Adam
Following a long--3-weeks--roadie, the Ice Dogs came home to Long Beach and earned a 4-3 win over the Wranglers from Las Vegas. The relatively small crowd (2200) saw a great first period, with the Ice Dogs outshooting the Wranglers, 20-3, and then letting their 3rd and 4th lines take over for the remainder of the game. A cheer went up & the crowd waved their Ice Dog sweater gifts when the pa announcer reminded us that "playoff tickets will go on sale March 1." The Dogs lead the western division in the ECHL--this is the latest they have ever led their division & they're pushing to get the best record in the league.

Congrats to your Dogs Adam. And way to go regarding getting a playoff berth! I am jealous. Me and friend are going to the huge Tri-City Spokane battle for 4th place on Saturday night, which will be another sellout. Maybe Spokane can get the job done then. Cross your fingers. They have now lost the last 2 games in a row against Tri-City. Spokane plays Portland here Friday night, in yet another critical game. I do believe the battle for 4th will be on until the last game played with either Spokane/Tri-City. Incidentally, nice article in my "Inlander" paper here today on a Spokane native, Derek Ryan who is playing with the Chiefs this year. Local boy makes good, and big impressions too. Go Chiefs!
hockeyTom
Now you can understand why I have gray hairs. Last night my Chiefs took on Portland here for their 3rd meeting on 3 consecutive Friday nights. Apparantly someone forgot to tell the Chiefs they only have 12 games left, and need to put a string of wins togther. Portland wins 4-0. Once again, there was some questionable Referreeing, disallowed goal for Spokane, numerous trips of Chiefs players, no calls. And at th eend of the second period, the 8,000 fans in attendance let the Chiefs know they were not happy with the way things are going. Tonight in front of another expected sellout the Tri-City Americans are in town for yet another now weekly battle for 4th place. Tri won last night, so Spokane is once again in the cellar but by only 2 points, as the Am's beat Everett last night. frown

Spokane is up in Prince George B.C. for yet 2 more critical games, as they have fallen behind Tri-City now by 2 points for the 4th and final playoff spot. Wake up Chiefs!!!
The other news is out of Tri-City where apparantly the Americans may be on the move, elsewhere. A group out of Chilliwack, B.C., and also a group in Edmonton have potential offers to try to lure the Ams to these places. The other possibility is they will attempt to stay in Tri-City and renegotiate their lease down there, but attendance is not at the 2,500 level per game which is needed to break even. Figures, our most hated arch rival, and they can't even bring them in down there. Too too bad Tri-City. my heart bleeds for thee. NOT!!!
Joe in Philly
They'd have to change the name of the team. The Edmonton Americans would make about as much sense as the Stockton, CA Boardwalk Bullies. wink
hockeyTom
Agreed.
hockeyTom
All right Chiefs!!! They were way, way way up north in Prince George last night. My friend and I were listening to the game and the Chiefs were down 3-0 after the first period, and sounded like they were left for dead!! So we wake up this morning, check the paper, and Spokane scores 4 unanswered goals in the 2nd period to take the game 4-3!! Woo-hoo. Chiefs are up there again for the second game with Prince George in as many nights. Spokane once again, tied with Tri-City for 4th place. C'mon Chiefs!
Adam
Following a road trip to Alaska in which they lost two of three games, the Long Beach Ice Dogs have fallen to third place in a tight race in the Western Division but can rebound this weekend at home when they host San Diego, Alaska, and Las Vegas. I have tickets for Friday and Sunday.

~Adam
hockeyTom
Hey Adam, I would take 3rd any day. Chiefs lost to P.G. in game two, and are now in 5th place again. sad.gif Two huge games here this week, Everett on Wed., and Tri on Saturday.
hockeyTom
Marc and I have alot in common this morning. Both his Hitmen lost, as did my Chiefs. sad.gif Calgary lost to perennial powerhouse Kelowna, and my Chiefs lost to Everett 6-2. I took in the game, as I was in a hockey mood, and was thinking the last time Spokane played Everett here, we spanked them 5-2. The game started out on a rather lousy, totally questionable Ref. call. A Spokane player and an Everett player were in a minor scrum, and the Ref. called a penalty on Spokane. Anything for Everett? Nope, even though he had been fighting. Everett scores with 15 seconds left in the penalty, and its all downhill from there. Chiefs lose 6-2. Even my local paper said the call was "totally questionable." WE have had far too many like this, this year. The only good news from last night was that Tri-City got bombed in Seattle 6-1, so we are still 2 points back of 4th, going into the HUGE game against Tri here on Saturday night.

If Spokane and Tri-City end up tied for 4th place at the end of the regular season, and I would bet $$ at this point, that that is what will happen, there will be a one game playoff game between Spokane and Tri to be held in Spokane as we have the better record against them.

Sorry about the Chiefs' loss, Puckman. Looks like the US division is going right down to the wire for the coveted fourth playoff spot! Meanwhile the two worst teams in the entire WHL (Regina Pats and Moose Jaw Warriors) happen to play in the same division and so one of them will slip into the playoffs with a dismal record while either Spokane or Tri-City, with much better records, will be eliminated. Although the Hitmen are assured of making the playoffs, they haven't been playing like a playoff team lately, losing 18 seconds into OT last night to the defending Memorial Cup champs, and the night before a humiliating 5-0 loss to Kootenay.
hockeyTom
Tonight, its step up to the plate night for the Chiefs, who went down to Portland last night and bombed the Winterhawks 4-1 at the Rose Garden. This is the same Chiefs team who got thrashed by Everett here 6-2 Wednesday night in the game I attended too. Go figure. But typical of how this year has gone. The bf and myself are going to the last game between the Chiefs and Tri tonight at the Arena. Should be another sellout or near sellout tonight. GO CHIEFS!! In other news I see where Marc's Hitmen and Red Deer played to a 2-2 overtime tie. It appears that series is very much like my Chiefs/Americans. Go Hitmen Go!!

Unlike puckman's victorious Chiefs, the Ice Dogs lost to the San Diego Gulls (3-2) in a shootout last night, in a game they Ice Dogs should have won as they outplayed the Gulls in every way. Of course, the Gulls needed the win as they look to be on the outs when playoffs begin while the Ice Dogs are sure to make the playoffs--currently in third in the western division, only a couple of points out of first.

Big news, however, is that the Stanley Cup will be in attendance when the Ice Dogs face the Las Vegas Wranglers Sunday night. We will be able to have photos taken with the Cup and there is a "Stanley Cup trivia challenge" planned for between the second and third periods! Prizes will be awarded!! Now all I have to do is find someone to go with....

This is really interesting -- the NHL, the NFL, the NBA, none of them have a playoff to break a tie like this. Baseball does, although with the wild-card there are some tiebreaker procedures in place if there are multiple teams tied in a division race and a wild-card race. The one-game playoff is a great thing.
Adam
The Ice Dogs had a bad weekend at home--lost all three games. Last night, the Las Vegas Wranglers (love the name, hate the team...) won 4-2, even though the Ice Dogs outshot them 49-14. In fact, in the first period, the Dogs outshot the Wranglers 11-1 (!) but were unable to score. Long Beach had lots of good chances and solid play but couldn't score. This weekend leaves keeps the Ice Dogs in third in the west (solidly in position for the playoffs) five points behind Alaska and three behind Bakersfield.

The biggest news was the presence of the Stanley Cup. All in attendance got to get up close and personal with the Cup--I even touched it!!--and children were allowed to have their photos taken with it. Very cool. If I had known kids could have their photos taken with the Cup, I would have coerced some youngster (nephew/niece or friends' kids) to go with me, if only to give me more time with it!

Sorry to hear about your Dogs Adam. Don't feel bad. My Chiefs lost 4-3 to arch enemy and much hated Tri-City here Staurday Night, in probably the final battle for the 4th and last playoff spot. Spokane started the scoring first, but fell behind, only to come back to tie the game at 3-3 after the 2nd period. The sellout crowd of 10,571 was totally cranked and amped for this game. The building was rocking. Unfortunately, Tri got the go ahead goal and won the game 4-3. The bf and I enjoyed ourselves except for the end score. Then Spokane went to SEattle yesterday and it sounds like they totally gave up. Lost 6-0. It looks like hockey will be over this week for me. sad.gif sad.gif Tough, frustrating year for Spokane, again.

Nice photo, Joe! I have a similar one of myself with the Stanley Cup (except I don't think there is a way of linking it since I don't have my own web page). I was at the HHOF in Toronto just a couple weeks before you and Canmark went to some of the World Cup games last summer. I spent about three hours in there, lots of great stuff, I think HHOF should be a mandatory pilgrimage for hockey fans (and maybe it's the only place in the world where us 'big' kids can pose with the Cup...take note, Adam!)

Hey Puckman, don't despair...the Chiefs still have a chance; it ain't over til it's over! The Hitmen played their last home game of the regular season on Sunday in front of a big crowd (18,000!)but lost to Kootenay. They have certainly been slumping lately and are going to have to perform better if they expect to get past the first round of playoffs.

OK...I'm officially green with envy (and green is not a good color for me) over Joe and Marc having photos of their time with the Cup & I do plan on getting to the HHOF at some point, but the "photos with children only" policy at Sunday's Ice Dog game puzzled me so I called the team's PR department, where a lovely lady answered my question by relating that two seasons ago--the last time the Cup made an appearance at an Ice Dogs game--a couple of guys got into a fistfight (!!) because one thought the other was taking too much time getting his picture taken with the Cup. In the hope of avoiding a repeat of that, the thought was by limiting the photos to children, their adult companions would behave better. She apologized about my not getting a photo with it, since (her words) "You sound like you wouldn't cause a fuss." Little does she know...

Spokane's chances now of overhauling Tri-City for 4th are even dimmer after a 4-0 shutout by the Portland Winterhawks last night here at the Arena. The first period was just totally intense and insane with end to end action the entire period. By and far the Chiefs vastly outplayed Portland, and the score very easily could have been 5-0 Spokane, but the Chiefs could not put the puck in the net, time and time again. There were many many fights in this game as well, especially towards the end, when Spokane got frustrated. Unfortunately we also lost our key scorer Chad Klaussen for the rest of the season to a knee injury to add insult. The only other good news of the night was that Tri-City lost to Kelowna, so we are still just 2 points back with 2 games remaining now.

Me too Joe. Thanks. Tonight Spokane has the unenviable task of playing the number 4 team in junior hockey in Canada, the Kooteny Ice who are fighting for the #1 spot in the B.C. Division, in Cranbrook, B.C. without our top scorer. Then tomorrow night the bf and I are going to take in the last game of the season when we play the Kootenay Ice down here. I am so not ready for this season to end. Go CHiefs!!! frown
hockeyTom
It is with an extremely heavy heart that I must inform this morning that Spokane is officially been eliminated from the playoffs this year. My Chiefs threw everything but the kitchen sink at Kootenay last night, and in fact went up on the Ice 2-0, before Kootenay came roaring back in the second period. Our backup goalie Opsahl, was spectacular in net, but it wasn't enough as the Ice take a heartbreaking 3-2 win over my Chiefs. Tonight I will be in attendance, with my bud, for the last game of the year for us. I hear in true Spokane fashion, the game is very close to a sellout. No suprise there. This is a city that loves hockey and its hockey team. All I have left to say this morning is Go Chiefs!!! It looks like Seattle will draw Tri-City in the first round of the playoffs. Go T-Birds!!!
Marc
Puckman, I applaud your loyalty as a dedicated Spokane Chiefs fan! Looks like they came oh-so-close to making the playoffs and so that makes it all the more heartbreaking. I'm glad you have been able to get to see quite a few of the games. Let's hope next season will be better for them.

It's unfortunate that a team like the Moose Jaw Warriors (13-47-10-1, with one game left) is rewarded with a playoff berth, despite having 15-20 fewer points than any of the eliminated teams in the three other WHL divisions. Meanwhile, the Hitmen beat the Lethbridge Hurricanes 1-0 last night and play their final game against the Red Deer Rebels tonight. If the Hitmen end up in third spot (still not determined), I think they will be relieved to face the Hurricanes in the first round rather than the Tigers.

puckman, thanks for the continuing updates on the Chiefs & enjoy the game tonight. It's great that Spokane supports the team; it's too bad they won't be able to cheer on the Chiefs through the playoffs. This has been a rough 24-hours for Spokane sports lovers, hasn't it? First the Chiefs and now Gonzaga. Keep your chin up--both teams will be back next season. And, there's lots of room on the Long Beach Ice Dog bandwagon (if you're looking for a team to root for.) biggrin.gif

Spokane played their hearts out in front of 10,571 sold out hockey fans. We held Kootenay to a 1-1 tie after 2, but then the Ice get the go ahead goal, we pull our goalie, they score, and thats it. It was a highly entertaining game, but I am so saddened by the prospect of no more hockey till Sept. Its been a rough year. But the puck will drop again in Spokane this September. wink

10,571 is a tremendous turnout. Nice to see Spokane still suppors the Chiefs--even though they're season is done.

The Ice Dogs ended their losing streak in a big way--defeated the San Diego Gulls 8-1 and it looks like the Dogs have gotten back on track. They're home this Wednesday against the mighty Gwinnett Gladiators (you have to love that name) and over the weekend, we host the Gulls and Bakersfield Condors (Dogs chase birds, don't they?) I'll be at the game Wednesday and Sunday. As a bonus, Sunday's game is a benefit for the local SPCA with the Dogs donating 50% of the night's proceeds to that organization. The Ice Dogs sit in third place; with a good showing oveer the weekend we can retake the lead in the Western Division.

~Adam
hockeyTom
Cool. Go Dogs Go!!!!!!
Adam
The Ice Dogs are back in second place in the western division folowing their 2-1 victory over the Gladiators of Gwinnett. Just over 3300 people cheered as Marty Clapton got his first goal ever to tie the game for the Dogs in the final minutes of the first period 7 then got really worked up when the Dogs got the game winner midway through the second. From then on, defense took over--lots & lots of good, solid, hard hits and crashing the boards. If the Dogs continue this style of play this weekend, we could easily be back in first place by Monday.

AS I alluded to earlier about the possibility that our arch rival Tri-City may be getting ready for a move, an article in my paper here this morning pretty much confirms this. Tri-City has filed an application to relocate to Chilliwack, B.C. And it appears that Spokane isn't exactly jumping for joy at the prospect. Our GM Tim Speltz here said, " there is no way we could support this. We think it would be detrimental to the US Division, and overall we view the Tri-City market as being a good market."

If the move happens the Chiefs could be affected in a couple of ways. First Spokane would lose its closest neighbor and top rival. The Chiefs, and Am's always draw large, if not sellout crowds in Spokane. Second the move would probably mean some kind of a realignment of the Division. One of the approaches would have the Kootenay Ice becoming Spokane's main rival. Other possibilities include playing an unbalanced schedule by making Vancouver play more US teams, or moving Vancouver out of the B.C. Division to the US Division, or renaming both western conference divisions and basing them on geography. Kootenay has already made it clear that it does not want to change divisons and wants to preserve its rivalry with Kelowna.

The Americans have been in Kennewick, Wa., since relocating from New WEstminister B.C. in 1988. They have had multiple ownership changes since then, and attendance has steadily dwindled.
hockeyTom
According to the article in my paper yesterday, it now does appear that the Tri-City Americans will be relocating to Chilliwack, B.C. which is about an hour east of Vancouver. Spokanes offical position is that we can't really support this, laregly in part because of the tremendous crowds at the Arena when Tri-City is in town. The other big reason is that if they do relocate there, Spokane's travel expenses will most likely go way up. According to an article in the Kelowna Courier, there is talk of making Kootenay more of a rival with Spokane, but Kootenay does not want to hurt its rivalry with Kelowna. They could also realign the US Division, and they could also allow Vancouver to join the US Division, which would really be silly if you ask me. It should be interesting. I understand that next Thursday will be the vote on Tri-City.
Adam
Adding Vancover to the American division seems screwball to me--and I have to wonder how the good people of Vancover feel about it. It sounds like a realignment of the division by geography may help foster a new rivalry...and having a good "enemy" team always adds a lot to games involving "them" and "us."

~Adam
Adam
There's some good news & some bad news for the Ice Dogs following this past weekend's three games. The good news: they're solidly in second place in the Western division & are just a couple of points out of first place. Additionally, their 86 points is the highest point total in the team's history. The bad news: they went 1-2 in the three games played this weekend and played their best hockey in a 7-3 loss to the Bakersfield Condors (currently in third place.) They split a home & away series to the San Diego Gulls in games that neither team seemed to want to win.

I got my wish. In big headlines in my morning paper here reads " Chiefs Dump Conroy". I almost feel sorry for the guy. Former Chiefs Coach Al Conroy did have one year remaining on his contract but the Chiefs (wisely) decided to let him go, saying what had transpired this season " was unnacceptable." Here..here..so the hunt goes on now. If anyone knows of a really good hockey Coach, please tell him the Chiefs are looking for him. Al was a nice guy, but you know the saying about nice guys....... wink
Adam
In their final home game of the regular season, the Ice Dogs again trounced the Victoria Salmon (not a good name) 5-1. An all-around solid performance in front of a very appreciative 5600 fans. For the record, attendance at the Long Beach Arena set a record this season--more than 115,000 tickets were sold, up approximately 25,000 from last year (they should send the Kings and Ducks thank you gifts...) Though it wasn't "Fan Appreciation Night," the Ice Dogs showed their appreciation by selling all concessions at half-price, so I broke down and purchased an Ice Dogs jersey. Additionally, I purchased some tickets for the first round of playoff games.

They have three games in Fresno (tonight, then Friday & Saturday) to end the season. With a record of 41-20-8, they currently sit in second place in the Western Division, three points behind Alaska. Not bad for a team that missed the playoffs--badly--in each of the last three seasons.

~Adam
Marc
Victoria Salmon? I kind of like that name, actually! Fish deserve an equal opportunity to be represented in sports team names, along with all the mammals and birds! smile.gif I often wondered if Victoria had a hockey team (it's certainly a big enough market to warrant a WHL or AHL team), now I know they are in the same league as the Ice Dogs! Good luck to your team, Adam!
hockeyTom
Congratulations on the success of your Ice Dogs Adam. That is a mighty fine record! Also Marc your Hitmen advanced, if I am correct, yes? Good job! Of course I am extremely pleased that Seattle elminated Tri-City the other night and took this series, 4-1. Way to go T-Birds!! The game I would love to see tomorrow night is the game 7 between Portland and Everett. Everett started strong in this series, but Portland has really come on of late. Gotta go with the Winterhawks here, as Everett swept Spokane 4-0 in round one of the playoffs last year.

Hmm, I don't know Adam...judging by the logos I found for both the Salmon Kings and Ice Dogs, I think the fish has a more menacing look than the bull-dog, and ought to strike fear into the hearts of the team from Long Beach! biggrin.gif What do the rest of you think? I should add that the species depicted looks like the dreaded killer salmon, found only in BC waters!

Getting back to the WHL for a moment, the second round of playoffs begin Friday and Saturday:

Everett Silvertips vs Kootenay Ice
Seattle Thunderbirds vs Kelowna Rockets
Prince Albert Raiders vs Medicine Hat Tigers
Calgary Hitmen vs Brandon Wheat Kings

The Hitmen would have played the (nearby) Red Deer Rebels in the second round if the Rebels hadn't lost their seventh game to Medicine Hat. But instead of a 90-minute drive to Red Deer, they face a 12-hour bus trip across the prairies to Brandon, Manitoba. No cushy airline flights for these guys!

BTW Puckman, my belated congratulations on your 5000th post! I think Joe must be looking over his shoulder. smile.gif

Here are the latest updates from last night's round 2 action:

Calgary 10
Brandon 1 Wow, nice job Hitmen!!!

Kootenay 4
Everett 2

Seattle 2
Kelowna 1

These were all game 1 results. I am almost thinking about going over to Seattle next Tuesday night for game 3 between Kelowna and Seattle. I think this series is going to be a doozy.

Sunday morning updates:
Calgary loses, :-(, so the series is tied at 1 each. Everett is down now 0-2 against Kootenay where the series now heads back to Everett, and Seattle has a commanding 2-0 lead now over Kelown, with this series switching back to Seattle as well.
