sooners2727
Tonight's much-anticipated game between Nashville and Detroit has come to a abrupt pause. In the first period just minutes ago, Red Wings D Jiri Fischer collapsed on the bench. CPR was administered immediately and there was great concern shown by the Wings and fans right around the bench.

Predators' captain Greg Johnson was just interviwed as they have gone ahead and called for the 1st intermission, and he seemed quite distraught. He did say he had heard Fischer was breathing and was stable. They took him off through the Wings' bench instead of out the tunnel on the ambulance which to me is a good sign.

So whatever it is that you do in times such as this, please do... whether that's pray or whatever. Let's just hope for the best!

The fact that Nashville is leading 1-0 just doesn't matter at all now.

(edited: I am SO sorry I didn't spell his name correctly...)

One other note, CPR was administered by one of the refferees... Don something or another.

According to ESPN News, Fischer was hit in the throat by a puck, causing a constriction.

They just mentioned that on Nashville radio, too.

I have the FSN Detroit feed. I put the game on just a couple of minutes before the game was stopped. I'm not sure when he was hit with the puck -- if he was on the bench or during play. I'm using my DVR and rewinding to the point where I put the game on to see if I see anything.

Edit to add: well, I screwed up and pushed the wrong button on the remote and lost the prior portion that was temporarily saved on the DVR. From what I did see a few minutes ago, from about the 8:00 mark to when it was stopped (about the 7:30 mark), I didn't see any puck go to the bench.

They're reporting that one ambulance left the building but they're waiting for another one to come to the arena. I'm not sure why the first ambulance was apparently inadequate.

Someone on the bench was definitely doing CPR.

I just caught Espnews myself, and it reports that he was hit in the throat by a stick.
Adam
Per ESPN News: Fischer was hiot in the throat by a puck and then a high stick as he was in front of the bench. He has been taken to the hospital and is--fortunately--breathing on his own.

The time "lost" from the first period will be added to the second period.

ESPN News must not be 100% sure about this as they are citing Fox Sports Detroit for all information; usually ESPN likes to take credit for any information they report.

On the FSN Detroit feed they're saying that no cameras (either the Detroit or Nashville telecasts) caught anything that definitely shows what happened. It seems to me he may have just collapsed. Does he have any history of heart problems?

FSN Detroit says it hasn't been decided for sure that the game will resume. They're waiting at least until that second ambulance arrives.
sooners2727
And just reported on the Preds' broadcast... whether or not to continue this game tonight is in the hands of the Red Wings. They have gone to alternate programing while we await that word.
sooners2727
The first ambulance took Fisher to the hospital. NHL policy states that there must be an ambulance at the building, thus why there's that delay for the ambulance. We're still waiting on word from the Wings on whether or not play continues tonight.

FSN Detroit is interviewing the senior director of communications of the Red Wings. Fischer suffered a seizure on the bench. CPR was administred and they used a defibrillator. He was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition, breathing on his own, and he says Fischer is "doing well." This is very good news.

The teams are still meeting and in phone conversations with league officials (plus one who is in the building) to discuss whether to resume the game.

They just did a very good thing by announcing this to the crowd. They've been sitting there wondering what's going on...unless, of course, they've made or received calls on their cell phones to see what's being reported. wink

Fox Sports Radio has reported that FSN Detroit has told them he suffered a seizure. They also stated that they used a defibulator (pardon my spelling if that's incorrect). He is listed in stable condition... very good to hear. And Fox Sports Radio is killing ESPNEWS for being so aggressive with this and reporting bad info.
sooners2727
I'll just let you keep us up-to-date, Joe...

I will add that 104.5 The Zone just broke into national Fox Sports Radio coverage with studio host Willy Daunic absolutely blasting FSR for being so light-hearted about this event. They were joking around and crap... real pathetic. I'm glad they were not fast to report stuff, but then to be light-hearted... that's crap.
sooners2727
Nashville radio has just reported they're clearing stuff out of the hallways, making them think they won't be finishing this game tonight. They can't play tomorrow night because Nashville has a back-to-back starting with Columbus on Wednesday. At this point, I guess it really doesn't matter what happens tonight as long as Jiri is okay.
sooners2727
The game will not be finished tonight.
Joe in Philly
After my last post they went back to the studio and updated other Detroit sports news. Then they went back to the arena where they then said the game would not be resumed tonight. NHL Center Ice then cut off the feed so that's the end of my FSN Detroit updates. wink

I wasn't watching ESPNEWS, of course, so I don't know if they were really off-base with what they reported. The FSN Det. game announcers didn't know what happened. They just speculated whether a puck or stick hit Fischer. Their reported at ice level said he was getting reports that Fischer was hit with a puck (but he never said where those reports were coming from). But any time something like this happens, there's all kinds of speculation and rumor and some of it ends up getting picked up somewhere as a "report."

I was just reading this story on nhl.com. They said nothing about any pucks anywhere, just that he was diagnosed with a heart abnormality back in '02, that he suffered a seizure during the game. I guess this heart condition caused him to miss 2 days worth of practice. Not much else was mentioned. I hope he is okay. wink
sooners2727
Okay, so that was a crazy little while there, huh? Hopefully Jiri is going to be okay and the Red Wings and the Predators can focus at some point on playing the game of hockey. After all, that's all this is - just a game.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with this game. There seems to be several possibilities.

1) They reschedule at a later point in Detroit and start with 7:30 to play, Nashville up 1-0.

2) They reschedule at a later point in Detroit and start anew.

3) They just cancel the game alltogether.

Option 3 obviously is the more unlikely to happen. Option 2 sucks for the Predators. Option 1 is the best, but it's almost impossible in a sport such as hockey to have the exact same lineup and such for a game at a point in the future. How should that be addressed? So many questions...

And let me add, the asking of these questions is by no means meant to de-emphasize what happened tonight. My first thoughts are of course with Jiri right now.

Statement from the Predators' website:

QUOTE
Preds' game halted after Fischer collapses
November 21, 2005

Monday night's game between the Nashville Predators and the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena was suspended 12:30 into the first period, after Red Wings defenseman Jiri Fischer suffered what team spokesman John Hahn described on Detroit television as a seizure and collapsed while on the players' bench. Fischer, a 25-year-old native of the Czech Republic, was resuscitated on the scene and is reported to be in stable condition at Detroit Receiving Hospital, breathing on his own and responsive.

\"We have a number of players who know Jiri Fischer,\" Nashville head coach Barry Trotz said. \"In particular, guys like Tomas Vokoun, [Marek] Zidlicky, [Martin] Erat, all the Czech players. I know even Kimmo Timonen and a couple of other guys know him. Obviously there is great concern for him. It was scary, the situation. Obviously very traumatic for us but also I couldn't imagine Detroit's locker room.\"

National Hockey League representatives consulted management, coaches and players from each club while reaching the decision to suspend the game. Information on a rescheduled date will be provided as it becomes available.

\"I thought the NHL did a great job of taking everything into consideration--the players, the coaches, the management, the fans, everybody--and the decision was made to reschedule the game,\" Trotz said. \"You had two very good teams that wouldn't have had a lot of interest in playing that game if it would have continued on. There's no question in my mind the right decision was made by the NHL and both teams and everybody involved in that decision.\"

The Nashville Predators had taken a 1-0 lead on a goal by Greg Johnson just over a minute before Fischer's collapse. During a stoppage in play, the arena's collective attention turned toward commotion at the Red Wings bench. Individuals from the teams' medical and training staffs and the officiating crew rushed to Fischer's aid, performing CPR on the 6-5, 225 pound defenseman. A defibrillator was used before he was ultimately placed on a stretcher and wheeled to an ambulance that took him to the hospital.

\"The latest we've heard was that he was at the hospital and they've got him stablized and he's talking,\" Trotz said. \"And that's a great thing because there were moments when they had to defib him to get his heart going again. It looked scary from where we were and we were just over on the other bench. I'll tell you what, they had some people working very, very frantically on him.\"

In an eerie coincidence, a ceremony prior to Nashville's Saturday night game in Minnesota honored the late Sergei Zholtok, a forward who had played for both the Wild and the Predators before collapsing during a November 2004 game in Latvia and dying of heart failure. \"Going through the tribute to Sergei Zholtok two nights earlier, [tonight's incident] hit home with us and I know it hit home for Detroit as well,\" Trotz said.

The Predators will travel to Columbus Monday night as planned, according to Trotz, and will begin preparing for their Wednesday night game against the Blue Jackets. In the meantime, their thoughts remain with Fischer.

\"Quite frankly both teams just felt that the absolute right thing to do was reschedule it and give our thoughts and prayers to Jiri,\" Trotz said. \"I think everybody will benefit from it. Hopefully Jiri gets better and recovers. You should have two very interested teams playing each other later on at a rescheduled date.\"

I heard about Jiri Fischer last night, but didn't get a chance to see the drama unfold until Sportscenter this morning. Great job by the Red Wings' medical staff who saved his life. You could just see all of the intensity in the players' eyes, especially Steve Yzerman skating as fast as he could to bring Fischer (on the stretcher) across the ice. Mike Babcock's attentiveness should be commended as well. Even Brendan Shanahan thought quickly to escort Fischer's fiancee to him as soon as possible. The Red Wings were so prepared for something like this, it was almost like they had practiced this drill. In addition, respectful stuff from the Barry Trotz and the Predators' bench understanding the severity of the situation. Great news to hear that Fischer is in a "jovial" state.

They were just talking about this again during a Sportscenter segment with Barry Melrose. He said that it just scared the heck out of the Wings as well as the Preds who have a number of Czech players, and neither team felt they wanted to play the remainder of the game. He also said that Babcock is really going to have to stir things around to try to get the Wings back on track after their last several losses and with this situation. I would agree. Don't count Mike out just yet. He is not a quitter, and he knows how to right the ship again.

All this brings back some memories for me...two in particular.

One occured in 1989?? in what was the scariest moment ever in Buffalo sports history as Sabre goaltender Clint Malarchuk had his throat slashed by a skate during a game at the Aud.

That trainer....words can't justify how he saved Clint's life on the ice as the jugular vein pumped blood onto the ice. He got the wound covered and stopped....a few seconds more.....oh....my....@$!@# god!! I still get woozy thinking about it.

More recently in March of '02 I was at a Sabres game in Toronto. The Leaves were having a special night as they were celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Maple Leaf nickname. In tribute they wore replica 1927 Toronto St. Pats jerseys(of which I have one of only 1927) on this night and brought out the 25??? greatest Maple Leaves in a pre game ceremony.

In a tragic scene, one of the representatives of the greats(can't remember the name, but he was a nephew of a player from the 20's/30's)had a heart attack right on the bench just prior to being introduced. A fan watching on TV would have seen him collapse right behind a few other people.

They could not revive him and he died right there...the start of the game was delayed roughly 45 minutes but they DID play much to the chagrin of the players.

Game was delayed a second time from a shattered glass panel, and then went to OT and ended in a tie.( "An Ugly Green Tie" ) the TO Sun would headline the next day. We left the building at about 10:45 for a 7 PM faceoff, easily the latest I had ever been at a regualar season game.

Jiri had a very touching press conference today. His future is still uncertain. frown

He still wants to play, but I wonder how realistic a chance he has. Then again, I still think Eric Lindros should've retired.
