Season opener is Monday!

I don't have a good read on this team. The major players from last year's distarous team are back but I'm not so sure if that's a good thing. I'm hoping last year was a fluke. The M's should be better this year and I hope the pitching improves, although the pitching staff didn't look very impressive in Spring Training. Sexon needs to stay healthy. And if the season does suck, at least there is always Ichiro to watch.

Hargrove hasn't announced his starting pitcher yet, but it will probably be the old guy, Jamie Moyer. If not Moyer, then it will probably be Gil Meche.

What will be a surprise to me is if Ichiro doesn't hit .400 this season. He's very capable of doing so and he tore up spring training hitting well over .500.
JeffWa
OK i was at opening day. Been there the last couple years. I think alot of people are waiting to see what this team will do. I believe that the game was not a sell out.

Some of the new mariners stood out. Especially Richie Sexson. Two bombs at his first two at bats. Beltre looked allright. Its still obvisouly very very early in the season. Defensivly the mariners looked a little rough. Boone running down a pop fly into shallow rite and dropping it. and one error at shortstop. Sexson snagged one out of the dirt that was impressive as boone went to his right behind second to field the ball and had to hop and throw to first...

Overall I think that they played a good game. The opening day jitters should be gone now and they can get down to working out those last few bugs and getting on with business.

I am excited for the season especially since my partner got me a sixteen game package of tickets.

Go M's
Mariner Duck Guy
2-4 start. Note to self: Don't panic! Don't panic!

M's got some not so good news yesterday with the news that Madritsch will be out for 3 or more weeks. With Pineiro also out, the Mariners are without 2 of their 5 starters, although Pineiro is due back soon. And closer Guardado got hammered on Saturday. Throw in Meche sucking the big one so far and things do not look good early for the 2005 M's. On the bright side, it's only the first week of the season.

eek! eek! eek!

Well, at least the Ancient Mariner doesn't suck! eek! Jamie Moyer is now 4-0 after today's 9-1 win over Cleveland. It was also his 130th career win in Seattle, tying Randy Johnson's record. The Mariners are now 9-10, which sounds mediocre, but they are only two games behind the division-leading Angels in the tight AL West. At this point last year they were 6-13. While it's still early in the season, I think there is reason for optimism for M's fans.

Ichiro was officially honoured on Friday at Safeco Field for breaking George Sisler's hitting record last year. He's off to another great start, presently with a .355 average and 16 runs.

i am still very optomistic about the season. I think Sexson and Beltre are getting used to hargrove and hitting at the safe. Hopefully Boone will Step up and give the m's a reason to keep him around another couple years. I honestly think the problem is the pitching staff. The other day against cleaveland they gave up 5 in the first inning. I think seattle needs to get a big starter. Still i am excited to see the Red sox and Yankees next month.

M's have the 4th best pitching staff in the AL so far with a 3.81 ERA smile.gif

However, they're 11th in hitting with a .250 AVG. sad.gif (It will get better!)

Hopefully Ryan will get some run support tomorrow against the Rangers!
JeffWa
The M's seem to be real streaky with thier bats this year. One game they'll come out and give thier pitchers support and then the next they seem to flounder. Good to hear that Snelling is recovering and hitting the ball well in Tacoma. I was disappointed the other day when moyer only went 2 2/3 innings or so. WOuld be nice to see him get that win that puts him ahead of Randy Johson.

next game i will be attending is 5/14 against boston. Cant wait.

Mariners are FINALLY playing much better. Winners of 7 of 9 and winning their last 3 series. Last night's win against Florida was a good start to the road trip, but it gets a lot tougher since they are scheduled to face D-Train tonight & Josh Beckett tomorrow.

JeffWa, are you going to the company day game on the 18th?
Mariner Duck Guy
Damn. The Marlins behind D-Train's pitching (although not superb tonight) win game 2 of the series.

Last night I wasn't paying attention to the tv when I thought I heard the local sports reporter interviewing a gay guy. Turns out, it was the M's #1 draft pick, U$C catcher Jeff Clement. When I looked at the TV, he definitely gave off a gay vibe. Even my partner, who doesn't really follow baseball, walked into the kitchen and said "That guy sounds gay"

No matter. I just hope he turns out to be a future major league catcher for the M's.

Ichiro collects hit number 1,000... only the third player since 1900 to get 1,000 hits in less than 700 games (Chuck Klein and Lloyd Waner are the other two). Ichiro also has 1,278 hits from 8 seasons in the Japanese league. He had a .353 career average in Japan; .336 career average so far in MLB.

Just got home from watching the M's win over the Mets. They FINALLY solved Pedro Martinez after goin 0-14 againt him. Since this was my first game of the season, I was looking forward to watchinf Sexon play. Well, that didn't last long. He got ejected in the bottom of the first after disputing a called thrid strike but he did add some spark to the game by throwing a bucket of balls onto the field after being ejected. I did notice that he's a tall and kind of lanky guy but his pants are way too baggy. Boonie didn't play so my eye candy for the evening was gone. Ichiro had a quiet night. It was a beautiful evening in Seattle and the game flew by.

This was a surprise: bye-bye Boone.

Bret Boone made a tearful exit from the Seattle Mariners, who cut the three-time All-Star on Sunday after a half-season of struggles at the plate.

The second baseman, a 12-year veteran with 252 homers, was designated for assignment. Seattle has 10 days to trade him or put him on waivers.

He could always het a job at DisneyWorld as one of Snow White's dwarves. Just put a little red cap on him and he looks just like Bashful.

While I am sad that Boonie is gone (there goes my favorite butt on the M's!) his production is way off from previous years.

I know his name was mentioned in the Balco scandal, and he has denied all allegations of steroidd use. But, it is kind of a coincidence that he really bulked up quick in his all star year and so did his production. Then, over the next few years, he looked smaller (actually, he looked normal) and he said it was due to a "new workout routine". But ever since then (one could assume going off the juice), his production dropped and he wasn't the same Boone.

He's still hot, but he just wasn't putting up the numbers here in Seattle. Maybe a change in scenery will give him a jolt. I heard the Padres are interested in Boone.

I guess I will now have to cast my vote for Gil Meche for the title of hottest Mariner!
JeffWa
Gil Meche? Edgar is still and will always be the hottest mariner :-)
Mariner Duck Guy
Agreed. But since Edgar retired he doesn't count.

IMHO, I think Meche is the most handsome Mariner, but Richie Sexson is the hottest.

As for Boonie, I found my eyes tearing up watching him at the press conference. You hate to see that happen to someone who seems like such a great guy.
Mariner Duck Guy
Dayum, I forgot about Sexy Sexon! He got minus points from me due to the fact that he was wearing his uniform a little too baggy when I last saw him. Plus, he got ejected from the game in the bottom of the first inning so I didn't get a chance to see him much. And I had awesome seats for that game too. Boo.
