According to a newspaper in Boulder, Colorado, Patrick Roy has decided to retire and will hold a press conference sometime this week. The Avs organization says it cannot confirm or deny the story.

I am kind of surprised at this decision if true. I feel Roy has at least a few more years left in him. Maybe he wants to go out on top though..knowing him.

Comparing players from different sports is silly, but ESPN did an interesting comparison between Patrick Roy and Cy Young, the only athletes with more than 500 victories to their credit.
ROY:
19 seasons
551 wins
.618 winning percentage
2.54 goals against
66 shutouts
YOUNG:
22 seasons
511 wins
.618 winning percentage
2.63 ERA
76 shutouts
Interesting they have they same winning percentage.

I got the feeling after the Avs lost game 7 to Minnesota that that was it for Roy. Maybe because for the last few years I kept hearing about his sore hips (I'm sure there's a joke there, but I'll resist). Great career, great goalie...I'm not sure how one would definitively determine that he's the GREATEST goalie, as I kept hearing on the local news, but the Avs have been lucky to have him in goal as much as they did during their existence.
I thought I heard one of his kids asked after the press conference, "Dad, do we have to move back to Canada?" Just thought I'd throw that in there...I think Canada would be a fun place to live, personally, but then again I'm not a pre-teenage girl.
