ESPN: The Magazine offers a page of Sporting Indicators as to the outcome of the presidential election. The hockey indicator:

Every time there's been an NHL work stoppage in an election year, a Democrat has won the White House and a Bush has come in second. Evidence: 1992--Ten-day strike mars season, Clinton defeats Bush; 2004--NHL locks out players, advantage Kerry.

From a different sport, this is my favorite of their indicators:

The last five times the Los Angeles Lakers won the title in an election year, a Republican took the White House:

1952, Lakers defeat the Knicks--Eisenhower defeats Stevenson
1972, Lakers defeat Knicks--Nixon defeats McGovern
1980, Lakers defeat Sixers--Reagan defeats Carter
1988, Lakers defeat Pistons--Bush defeats Dukakis
2000, Lakers defeat Pacers--Bush defeats Gore
2004, Pistons defeat Lakers--advantage Nader.

I saw the magazine at synagogue this morning and ripped out the indicators page--I'm going straight to hell, aren't I?

So it's happened once before...not much of an indicator, is it?

Adam, if you're going to hell there's no hope for the rest of us. wink You have ESPN the magazine at your snyagogue? Does that mean your synagogue is something like that church where Bernie Mac is preaching and Lebron James is passing the ball all over the place? biggrin.gif

I'll take any indicator of a Kerry victory I can find!! And, to be precise about where I found the magazine, it was in the vending machine area that separates the main chapel wing from the classrooms. I went there before services to get some coffee and ESPN: The Magazine was sitting on top of the hot beverage dispenser.

One other indocator I'm taking to heart:

Whenever the Red Sox or the Cardinals win the World Series in an election year, a Democrat takes the White House:

1912 Red Sox beat NY Giants--Woodrow Wilson wins
1916 Red Sox beat Brooklyn Robins--Woodrow Wilson again
1944 Cardinals beat St Louis Browns--FDR wins fourth term
1964 Cardinals beat Yankees--LBJ
2004 Red Sox beat Cardinals--advantage Kerry.

Oh, and if we're all going to hell, the location for an OutSports Convention will be easy to settle! wink

Adam, this doesn't pertain to hockey, but I heard on CNN this morning about the election outcome of the Green Bay/Wash. game today. I guess each time the Skins have won before an election, the Repugs. have won, and if Green Bay wins today, Kerry is in. I just checked the score, and its Paackers 20-Skins-7 in the 3rd quarter. Woo-Hoo!! Go Packers!!!
