ESPN: The Magazine offers a page of Sporting Indicators as to the outcome of the presidential election. The hockey indicator:
Every time there's been an NHL work stoppage in an election year, a Democrat has won the White House and a Bush has come in second. Evidence: 1992--Ten-day strike mars season, Clinton defeats Bush; 2004--NHL locks out players, advantage Kerry.
From a different sport, this is my favorite of their indicators:
The last five times the Los Angeles Lakers won the title in an election year, a Republican took the White House:
1952, Lakers defeat the Knicks--Eisenhower defeats Stevenson
1972, Lakers defeat Knicks--Nixon defeats McGovern
1980, Lakers defeat Sixers--Reagan defeats Carter
1988, Lakers defeat Pistons--Bush defeats Dukakis
2000, Lakers defeat Pacers--Bush defeats Gore
2004, Pistons defeat Lakers--advantage Nader.
I saw the magazine at synagogue this morning and ripped out the indicators page--I'm going straight to hell, aren't I?
