I read an article in my sports section yesterday. Guess Theo still says he has "problems" with at least alcohol, and the article went on to suggest that he has problems in other "areas" meaning drugs as well. He implied that as soon he thinks he is done with one addition, another one presents itself. And that he must face that one. Sad. I don't think there is alot of hope for the man really.

There's a scary quote from the TV interview he did, as reported in
this article: QUOTE
But Fleury said he did not hit rock bottom during that time.
\"For me, rock bottom is death,'' he said.
Very sad.

I missed the first two segments, but tonight I caught the third part of the Sportsnet interview with Theo (better known as
Theoren when he played here in Calgary). I recall last year he made some remark that he would like to play for the Flames again, but coach Darryl Sutter was less than enthusiastic about the idea, considering Fleury's problems.
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/article.jsp...103_155536_5248In a rare show of unity, Bill Daly (NHL) and Ted Saskin (NHLPA) defended the league's substance abuse program which Fleury lambasted in the interview tonight. Essentially, Fleury said the emphasis was on punishment rather than rehabilitation. The names of several other NHL players who have been through the league's program were mentioned. These included goalies Ed Belfour and Grant Fuhr, as well as Borje Salming (that last one is going back a few years).

Though no man is an island, Theo Fluery comes pretty close. No one seems to be in his corner trying to help him. And, of course, he doesn't seem to be helping himself.

many have speculated over the years that he was one of the victims of Graham James back in his junior days.. and that would be another burden on his shoulders. Unfortunately, what he would need IMO is to talk about those demons and for people to listen and try to help.
In that interview, he sounded like he gave up on stopping consuming completely. You can't do it just halfway when you're that deep in it, you have to stop it all COMPLETELY.

In case any have wondered about Theo Fleury, he currently plays for the Belfast Giants. In a recent game against the Edinburgh Capitals (Giants won, 11-2) Fleury scored three goals, had four assists, and engaged in three fights. As they'd say on SportsCenter: he had himself a game. Said Theo: "I'm here in Belfast determined to make a fresh start, doing something unique in my life that I can look back at with pride. I'm here to play hockey and win. If people want to tangle with me, I'll tangle."
I wonder if the three fights were spaced throughout the game, one per period?

Belfast eh??? Hmmm. Interesting. Now his problem with substance abuse was drinking, was it not? If so, Ireland should be a perfect match for him, wouldn't you think???? wink wink

I had no idea Fleury was playing overseas, and in fact I didn't know that hockey was even
played in Northern Ireland, where soccer and rugby are far more popular. Let's hope the three fights Fleury was involved in did not stem from different views on the Protestant vs Catholic conflict.
The last I had heard about Fleury, he was playing hockey on the Horse Lake reserve in northern Alberta. There had been some controversy as to whether his NHL experience would permit him to play there.

About once or twice a year I find an article in The Hockey News discussing the current situation of Theo Fleury. I wish I would have saved the article I just read over the summer. Each time I think he is turning a corner, he just goes backwards. It is such a sad situation, and I honestly think I am going to pick up the sports page one day and read that he is dead. ...and I have always liked the guy whether he was playing for the Rangers or the Flames or the Blackhawks or anyone else. He is still only 37, with over 1000 points in his NHL career. I just wish he could rid himself of his demons once and for all.

i've also always liked Theo Fleury.. and i heard about his going overseas a month ago on TSN.
Hey, i guess if he's happy playing for that team and with his life right now, then all the power to him. I don't know if that's the case or not, but i hope it is.

Am I the only one who wants either a Belfast Giants or Edinburgh Capitals sweater just for the novelty of it?

I've always felt sad about Fluery's problems (he's my best friend's favorite player). But it just never seems like he can apply the same drive and willpower that made him a professional success to working on his personal demons.

There was a piece on the newscast about Fleury and hockey in Belfast. They say since it's a news sport it can bring Catholics and Protestants together. The traditional sports clubs are associated with a community.
Report is in French. If interested, on this link, click on 13 novembre in the calendar. It's at 18 min. 30 sec. in the news.
Belfast Giants and FleuryI believe the TV report was on CBC The National a week or few days before but couldn't find their past newscasts on the web.

Oh, Theo....
QUOTE
BASINGSTOKE, England (CP) - Theo Fleury is in trouble again.
Fleury's future in Britain's Elite Ice Hockey League is in jeopardy after the ex-NHLer was ejected from Saturday's game between the Belfast Giants and the Basingstoke Bison.
According to a report on the HockeyRefs.com website, The Giants forward was given a game misconduct and match penalty for firing a puck at referee Mike Hicks in the final minute of Basingstoke's 4-1 victory. The puck reportedly missed the referee's head by inches.
After being assessed the match penalty, Fleury reportedly threatened the officials, earning himself a second match penalty.
Fleury and Hicks had clashed earlier in the game, when Fleury refused to go to the penalty box after being assessed a two-minute elbowing minor. Hicks hit him with a 10-minute misconduct.
Saturday's outburst was the latest for Fleury, who was kicked out of an EIHL game Jan. 10 after tussling with Coventry fans from the penalty box.
Since joining Belfast this season, Fleury has recorded 22 goals, 55 assists and 217 penalty minutes in 35 games.

Does he play under the influence?
i don't get it.. most people when humiliated like this in front of people, it would give them a kick in the butt to take control of their life..

Theo is back in the news, and I think he could be the new Bo Jackson

He will be throwing the first pitch in the
Calgary Vipers home opener tonight, but he is in fact serious about trying for a spot on the team. I hope to see him when I get to a few games this season. The Vipers have been in the news here a lot lately, with the pitcher-for-bats trade and the signing of former MLB player Felix José. Good luck to Theo in his new career in baseball!

I wasn't sure what you were talking about Joe, but a quick search revealed this
youtube video. You don't need to know Japanese to enjoy Mariah's...fastball? s(t)inker? She ought to stick to singing, I assume that's why she was in Japan in the first place. If Theo's performance tonight (hopefully without the high heels) makes it to youtube, I'll post it for comparison.
