It looks like not all injuries in the NHL result from fighting. This Maple Leaf player had a close call with the Grim Reaper, but am glad to hear he is recovering...

Oh my gosh! All that from a blister??!!?? Will wonders never cease? I get blisters all the time--tennis racquets, etc--and give them no thought whatsoever; that will change. Renberg is extremely fortunate to have had such quick care.

Bizarre, ain't it? How does a blister become so infected as to require amputation of the entire hand? Haven't the Leaf's trainers heard of Bactine?

[quote] Renberg aggravated a blister on his hand while trying to tie his skates in Edmonton on Saturday.

Never would have happened if Mikael had invested in a pair of those skates with the Velcro fasteners!

All tasteless jokes aside, I hope he recovers quickly. I always liked him as a player, dating back to his days as a Flyer.

Yeah, this is a really wild thing that happened to him. Can you imagine if they had to cut his hand off, like they thought? UGH!

It just goes to show sometimes you just never know.

That is just too too bizarre. I have never heard of a blister becoming so infected they would actually consider an amputation. Let that be a lesson folks. Now, on with the games!

Here's an item from today's Phila. Daily News about a local radio DJ:

[quote] "THIS FOOT was deadly," Ed Sciaky says from his hospital room, happy to be alive. "It tried to kill me once, and it may have wanted to kill me again."

He's talking about his right foot, which had been the source of a stubborn staph infection that led to the recent paralysis of the 54-year-old DJ.

Unbeknown to his many fans, Sciaky has been in a two-year battle with infections of both feet. That led to paralysis - the greatest fear he had ever known - on Dec. 19, pretty much cured by surgery. Doctors agreed the source of the infection was his right foot, which was removed Dec. 30, just above where the ankle had been.

Sciaky starts rehabilitation for the foot and for continuing neck and shoulder pain this week, and hopes to return to his WMGK gig in about two months.

Wasn't there a high school football player down in Texas last fall who had a leg amputated after what had appeared to be a routine football injury?
