As soon as the D'backs picked up "Shea-hole" Hillenbrand last week, they designated veteran 3B Matt Williams for assignment. Williams is quoted as saying "it would take a 'perfect scenario' for him to continue his career."
Mark Grace: "I told him he's the most professional player I ever played against or with. He knew he was getting released after the game. We all did. And then he goes in and slaps a double. He could have said, . . . 'Get somebody else to hit.' He could have, but that's not him.
"He was that type of player all the way to his final at-bat. The other thing that made me feel bad was his last two hits for this ballclub should have been game-winning plays. That's just his luck. Even when he does something great, we can't win. I told him, 'I'm so proud of you.' I almost started crying." - Mark Gonzales, Arizona Republic, 6/2/03
