But not near enough... Selig says that after his contract is up after the 2006 season, he won't return as commissioner.

That's good news, I'm not a Selig fan!

Thank you, JinP, for pointing out one of the few benefits of the fact that time will keep moving faster and faster as I get older and older.

Maybe someone can have 2006 calendar printed, place it in Selig's office...... "Wow Mr. Selig, look at this... it's time to GOOOOOOOO"

My initial euphoria at hearing this on ESPN last night has now died down, as I consider who might replace him. I fear the owners will just exchange one figurehead/tool for another!

Oh God, you're right, MetsBoy. And one person who'll be looking for a new figurehead/tool job by then will be Junior Bush.

Well, I strongly agree with sentiment that folks should vote Bush/Cheney in '04.

HOWEVER, baseball would have done well to listen to George W. Bush a dozen or so years ago. Bush was the only team owner that dissented from the lynching and execution of Commissioner Fay Vincent. Vincent's firing created a vacancy that the owners filled with ... one of their own ... Bud Selig being elevated to the commissionership. President Bush apparently holds Selig in low regard, feeling that he was doublecrossed on this issue.

I think that there are probably some folks posting on this thread who, while they may strongly dislike/disagree with George W. Bush as president, are still strongly appreciative/supportive of the fact that he did not participate Fay Vincent's decapitation. Vincent's firing launched baseball on a steady downward trajectory, which led directly to the '94 strike and the resulting World Series cancellation (which also destroyed any chance of baseball succeeding in French Canada), and a whole host of other injustices and improprieties plaguing the game.
