Hey, Jim and Cyd - I'm not sure who does the Tops/Bottoms blurbs every day, but some quick fact checking leads me to conclude today's is inaccurate. It states:
"The Seattle Mariners proved again they can dominate the New York Yankees, at least in the regular season. By winning Sunday, the Ms swept their weekend series in New York and have now won 11 of their last 12 regular season games between the two teams. Yankee fans, who see their team 4 1/2 games out of first, can only say: Wait until October"
Hmmmm.......11 of 12? Here are the results of the last twelve regular season games:
5/18/01 - Yanks 14, M's 10
5/19/01 - Yanks 2, M's 1
5/20/01 - M's 6, Yanks 2
8/17/01 - Yanks 4, M's 0
8/18/01 - M's 7, Yanks 6
8/19/01 - M's 10, Yanks 2
4/26/02 - Yanks, 7, M's 1
4/27/02 - M's 1, Yanks 0
4/28/02 - Yanks 4, M's 3
5/3/02 - M's 6, Yanks 2
5/4/02 - M's 9, Yanks 5
5/5/02 - M's 10, Yanks 6
That means the last twelve regular season games have resulted in 7 Mariner wins and 5 Yankee wins, NOT 11 out of 12. Frankly, these two teams are well-matched, and the regular-season results reflect that. The post-season results, where the Yankees have been much more dominant, reflect the Yankee edge in experience and the great intangible.
