Joe in Philly
They're 8-25 and playing poorly...

QUOTE
\"We are not playing well,\" Pena told The Kansas City Star after Tuesday night's game. \"It's tough to go to the ballpark and lose game after game. I haven't been eating. I haven't been sleeping. I don't want to get sick.\"

Bench coach Bob Schaefer, 60, will replace Pena on an interim basis in the first managerial change in the majors this season. Schaefer also managed the Royals for one game on an interim basis in 1991 between the firing of John Wathan and the hiring of Hal McRae.
Speculation on a successor: guess who's interested in ending his short broadcasting career? Hello, Larry... wink

Bowa, a scrappy player for 16 seasons, brought the same fire-and-brimstone attitude during his tenure in Philadelphia. While he occasionally clashed with players, Bowa posted a winning record in three of his four seasons with the Phillies.

He plans on contacting the Royals today.

“I'll talk to some people and see what happens,” Bowa said late Tuesday night. “They have an interesting team. They have some good young arms.

“It takes two people to get together.”

The 3-1 loss to the Jays last night was the last straw. Even though they faced a tough pitcher (Halladay), the Royals players botched a number of plays which must have driven Pena off the wall. Example: fly ball to shallow center field is caught by Vernon Wells, who throws back to second to pick off the runner. Why was the runner wandering off the base on a routine fly ball very near to the bag he's standing on? Poor Tony, he deserves better.

The game last night wasn't the last straw. Every game has been the same. Last night's game was not even close to being as frustrating as other losses. This team just has no talent outside the pitching mound. There's no offense in the minors and they only have one player (Sweeney) they can get a marginal player in return for in a trade. When you score one run a game you are simply not going to win.

Interesting note: Pena has been subpoenaed as a witness in a civil court case back in KC. No one know what the case is about. He's saying it's not related to the resignation, but... you never know.

Frank White will likely be the next manager of the Royals. It won't be Bowa. They don't need a manager like Bowa to lead them through a complete youth movement. This team is a disaster.

The subpoena is to testify in a divorce case, because the husband in the divorce case believes Pena was having an affair with his wife.

Tony Peña accused of adulterous affair in divorce suit.

It looks like the party-atmosphere that Tony Peña tried to give his players didn't quite work out after all. I am all for keeping things light and breezy, but when you are losing like the Royals have been, it cannot be too fun. I realize that the Royals don't have the payroll to keep up with other organizations. But, they could follow the examples of organizations such as the Twins and Tigers (that have been able to succeed or attempt to get better) in light of their own respective payrolls. Baseball is big business. Give me the managerial styles of a Joe Torre, Tony La Russa, Jack McKeon or Bobby Cox any day over someone that is all fun and games, like Peña.
