Full Version: The Angels naming brouhaha

The city of Anaheim and Angels owner Arte Moreno are at odds over Moreno wanting to change the team name to the Los Angeles Angels, so what do you think the Angels should put before their name.
Boltergeist
Give me back the California Angels.
BPT-336
I voted for "who cares". Team name is meaningless to how the game is played IMO. The Angels will be the same team on the field whether it's Anaheim, California, LA, or "The OC" in front of their name.

But it would be fun if visitng teams heard "Welcome to the O.C., bitch!" over the loudspeakers. wink

LA Angels just SOUNDS stupid. Even worse is The Los Angeles Angels. Duh! Isn't the new owner Latino? Doesn't he speak Spanish?!

Translation: "The The Angels Angels" How stupid is that?

Anaheim Angels has a nice ring to it. Stick with it. CA Angels is okay too.

Is was originally the Los Angeles Angels when they first joined the league, wasn't it? But of course that was when they actually played in LA.

Then again the Jets and Giants haven't played in New York for many, many years...

They were called the Los Angeles Angels when they started in 1961 because they played at Wrigley Field, which as everyone knows is in Los Angeles. They moved into Dodger Stadium in '62 but called it Chavez Ravine; became the Califonia Angels in 1965, and moved to Anaheim in 1966.

I voted for Anaheim, not because I care but because it just sounds better.

You will hopefully see another brouhaha down here within the next 6 months with the Marlins' new ballpark. They will be re-named the Miami Marlins when the ballpark deal is completed, since the new park will be located next to the Orange Bowl..

Let the word go forth from this day until, well, sometime in the future, the official name of the team shall be

LOS ANGELES ANGELS OF ANAHEIM

That name sounds really idiotic. It sounds like the team couldn't make a decision about which city, so it put them both. Even something like Los Angeles-Anaheim Angels, awful in its own right, sounds better than the trainwreck of a name they just came out with.

And why does every Anaheim team have to be "[Teamname] of Anaheim"? It seems like these teams are embarassed of the city they play in

This opens the door for the NFL's Giants and Jets to be known as The New York Giants/Jets of New Jersey. The New England Patriots of Foxboro? Too dumb!

I agree with you, it is stupid!
In some ways I like how bold the new owner is on how he wants to get more fans in the Southland to be Angel fans - he's a business owner and wants to make money. On the other hand Art Moreno comes off as an insensitive jerk that he is disregarding Angel history, the O.C. cities and the loyal fans by replacing Anaheim with Los Angeles. I feel for the fans and local politicians - they work so hard to get out of the shadow of the city/county of L.A. and trying to make a name for themselves like San Diego and San Francisco and here comes this new owner branding an O.C. team and telling everyone that it is a Los Angeles team.
I don't agree with Moreno changing the team from
Anaheim to Los Angeles - it's his team, but I think most people(and I'm the announcers and media) will continue to say Anaheim Angels simply because the new name is way too much to say.
Marc
How about just "Los Angel(e)s"? It would avoid the redundancy of "Los Angeles Angels". It has a nice bilingual ring to it, also the city and team name would be one and the same!

In any case, I hope they don't revert back to being called the California Angels. Somehow it doesn't seem right that states with multiple teams should have one of their teams named after the state rather than the city in which it's located (as is the case with the Texas Rangers and Florida Marlins).

Though the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim is silly, I like how it plays with a basic scientific law: in name, the team is in two places at once. smile.gif

I believe the Anaheim Angels sounds the best. But I would personally welcome the LA tag only b/c as an A's fan, I would love to chant "beat LA", "beat LA" at the Coliseum.

I also think it'll enhance the whole NoCal / SoCal rivalry. Right now, the A's and Angels don't have what the Giants and Dodgers have in a true rivalry.
Adam
It should be noted that though the team name has changed, nothing else has--the uniforms will not reflect the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim change, nor will the stadium. And as for chanting "Beat LA" in Oakland, it would be more correct to chant "Beat LAAoA." wink

Yeah, you're right. We could definitely have a field day with the whole name game bit.

What a pathetic move this is by the previously sure-handed Moreno (i.e. making one of his first actions after taking over the lowering of beer prices, for example).

I've been an Angels fan since 1974 and the team has been a joke most of that time, largely due to the hideous Autry's and the even more repugnant Mouse. See: cheerleaders on top of the dugout during the Mouse's first season (that didn't last long, I assure you). And now this chucklehead, hoping to wring a few more sheckles out of idiot advertisers, does this.

I can't stand Orange County--it's a brainless Republican hellhole as far as I'm concerned--so I have no brief about the "diss to the long-suffering fans of OC" aspect of this, but as Beachjock73 pointed out, it's just DUMB from a linguistics point of view.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.......

JA, maybe you should become a Dodgers fan then..... eek!

There'll be a whole lot of room for JA on the Dodger bandwagon considering the numbers of us jumping off in the wake of moves by the McCourts--and Paul De Podesta.

smile.gif No, I'd rather have my eyes poked with a sharp stick than become a Dodgers fan. I had the choice in 1974 and I made it: no utterly vile Lasorda, no "family friendly" bullshit, no Ross "Stats" Porter and all that. Thank you Nolan Ryan! smile.gif

Adam, sorry, the bandwagon's full, no more room, Dodgers fans have to stand by the curb and getting drenched, ala Carrie at the beginning of Sex and the City because the bandwagon already left the station in 2002. I've stuck with this team through thick (2002 & maybe 2004) and thin (every other year) and I really resent Blue fans hopping aboard just because their team is in perpetual crisis mode these days. Welcome to my world for the last 30 years.
