Joe in Philly
The matchups are set:

1 Tampa Bay vs. 8 NY Islanders
2 Boston vs. 7 Montreal
3 Philadelphia vs. 6 New Jersey
4 Toronto vs. 5 Ottawa

My predictions:
Lightning in 5
Bruins in 6
Flyers...no wait, Devils...no, Flyers....ummmm... wink okay, Flyers. In 7
Maple Leafs in 7
Cattledog
Tampa Bay over Long Island in 5
Boston over Montreal in 6
New Jersey over Philadelphia in 6
Ottawa over Toronto in 7
Kenny
I hope you boys are right about the Lightning/Isles since the regular season series the Isles have 3-1. I would have tickets to that game 5 if that is how it works out due to my ticketmaster fiasco.

The other games I predict:
Boston in 6
Flyers in 6
Ottowa in 7
hockeyTom
Joe a most intriguing set of matchups. I will go along with all of your predictions. But not necessarily the number of games it will take. Its time for somebody to dethrone the Devils, in this case, its the Flyers.
Kenny
OK, now I am happy because the game I have tickets to is game 5 on friday night April 16 if no sweep either way. If Lightning sweep I get the first game of the second series and I was told tickets are going up 50%. Let's go Lightning!
phillyrunner
I don't even remember the last time the Flyers won a playoff series over the Devils, but every streak has to end sometime. Therefore I think the Flyers will finally win a series over the Devils.

I know the Flyers goaltending has been questionable lately, but as long as Scott Stevens is out Philly has a chance.

Here are my picks

Flyers in 7
Bruins in 6
Toronto in 7
Lightning in 6
Trevor
Here are my picks, for what they are worth:

Islanders over Lightning in 6.

The Islands are 3-1 vs. Lightning this season, and the Lightning didn't look all that great in their past few games. I expect this one to be an upset.

Boston over Montreal in 6.

It will be tough, as 3! of their games have gone into OT this season.

NJ over Philly in 7.

honestly, it all hinges on Brodeur. If he's up to his regular season playing well, and the NJ D protects him some, they'll have it made.

Toronto over Ottawa in 5

This is my only emotional attachment this year. But with Lalime hurt, Ottawa will have real problems agaist Toronto. If he comes back, this series could go 7 games.

Hmmmm.....I think they'll be:

Islanders in 6
Boston in 5
Philadelphia in 6
Ottawa in 6

I agree with Joe and puckman that the Devils look extremely vulnerable this year and that the Flyers are the team to exploit that.

tphutch
TB over NYI in 6 - I think NY winning the season series was just a freak. Too much firepower in TB for NY's goaltending (boy that sounds weird to say).

Boston over MTL in 5. I'd love to see MTL advance - but unless Theodore can really turn it on quickly I don't see it happening.

Philly and Jersey - kind of a crapshoot. Philly's goaltending is a question mark. Not that they don't have two good one's, but which one do you start and how long do you let him play before pulling him?

Leafs and Sens. This is going to be a GREAT series. I hope like mad that Ottawa wins due to the fact I just don't like the leafs. But again -it will come down to goaltending. Can Lalime get back and strong? One wrong turn and Belfour's back could be out again. I'll go with my heart and say Ottawa in 7, but it's really a toss up.
Marc
--Tampa Bay over New York in 5
--Philadelphia over New Jersey in 7
--Montreal over Boston in 7 (Thornton's injury could be a factor; also, for what it's worth, the long playoff history between these two teams strongly favours the Habs)
--Taronna (aka Centre of the Universe to Canadians) over Ottawa in 7 (I hope my many relatives in Ottawa don't see this, they will disown me! Bitter rivalry between these two teams and cities, but I think the Leafs will prevail).

NY Islanders in 6
Boston in 5
New Jersey in 6
Toronto in 7
Ben
The Canadiens always have had an amazing ability to find goalies who make it their business to beat the Bruins in the playoffs. We only have to look back to 2002 to see that Theodore is yet another. Good as Raycroft is, don't be surprised to see JT steal yet another Boston-Montreal series.
Seph
The match-ups are all so incredibly close this year. Impossible to pick! And yet...

Lightning in 5.
Islanders won't be able to keep up in the goal scoring department, and Khabibulin should be more ready for a long playoff run than DiPietro.

Bruins in 6.
Joe Thornton will undergo a miraculous career-saving upperbodyectomy, Andrew Raycroft will start referring to himself as "Riggy," and in Gonchar, Bruins fans may have found their new Blue Line God, like Orr and Bourke before.

Flyers in 7, in overtime.
Mr. Burns ("...excellent...") vs. Mr. Hitchcock ("I will make grown men bawl like little schoolboys."). Boring defensive hockey doesn't have to win every year, does it? Nooooo!!!

Senators in 7, in triple overtime, in Toronto, in poetic justice.
Brian Leetch, yes, but he and McCabe just don't stack up against Chara and Redden. This time, Lalime will best Belfour, the parade-route map will be quietly removed from the Laff's official website, and Toronto has something new to whine about. Peter Bondra is my early pick to win the Conn Smythe in June.
Joe in Philly
Already, a blow to the Flyers' hopes. Eric Desjardins is out for the playoffs. After his right arm was broken, they put a metal plate into his arm to strengthen it while the bone healed. While playing catch with his son, the metal plate broke. eek! He had been back in the lineup for a grand total of 3 games.

What is it about the Wings first game at home in the playoffs. They look frequently casual, occasionally sloppy, and sometimes not very sharp. Well the Predators who have a 1-0 lead going into the 3rd period could be slightly responsible. They score 16 seconds into the game eek! , then receive a penalty shot, but don't score, and Vokoun looks really good. GO Predators!!! Hear the Bruins are beating up on Le Habs, 3-0 in their opener.
Adam
puckman, I loved the opening two minutes of the red Wings/Predators game--a goal and a penalty shot!!! Fabulous action! As I get ready to leave work, there are about 4:00 left in regulation and the Wings are ahead 2-1; the Predators have been impressive! Now I have to try to get home for most of the Avs/Stars game...

Pssst....the Wings and Predators are in the Western Conference. wink tongue.gif

I guess I don't understand, I could see a weakened bone breaking play catch, but not a metal plate. Maybe Desjardins should sue the manufacturer for poor workmanship. frown
Joe in Philly
Well, apparently it wasn't playing catch with his son that was the main problem:

QUOTE
While Clarke announced that Desjardins refractured the bone while playing a game of backyard catch Tuesday with his 6-year-old son Jakob, Desjardins said he believes the arm and the plate just gave out under the stress of playing and practicing hockey again.

\"It's not how it happened, it just simply gave,\" Desjardins said yesterday. \"I don't know exactly how or when it gave. I practiced in the morning, I felt pain, just the normal pain that I was feeling since I've been back.

\"At the end of practice I took a few shots and I took one one-timer and I felt a different pain, but I didn't make a big deal out of it. I've been through a lot of changes in my arm so I just went off and I went to treatment.\"

Later in the day Desjardins said he played catch with his son, and that when he went to put the baseball gloves away in the closet he noticed that \"my arm was, like, weird.\"

\"I brought my arm down and I shook it and I could feel the bone was moving and I didn't want to believe it at first, and I asked my wife to look at it and she didn't want to look at it. She said, 'Don't touch it, don't move it.' We called the doctor and the X-ray said that the plate had broken.\"

Joe, sorry I posted comments in the wrong regional thread. I will try to be more accurate in the future. Ooops. wink
Adam
Andrew Raycroft backstopped the Bruins to a shutout over the Canadiens. He's just one of the many "virgin" goaltenders making their playoff debuts this season--I find it amusing that so many analysts seem to be scratching their heads and opining about the nerves these fresh faces must be experiencing.

A two-minute minor for that Puckman! wink But I'm sure Joe will forgive ya. With teams like Detroit who play in the Eastern time zone with the 4pm Pacific/5pm Mountain start times, it's easy to forget they are 'Western' Conference teams! And you, Adam, tputch and myself have to adjust. But I suppose it's worse for the Eastern guys who risk losing their beauty sleep to stay up late if they want to see the playoff games in Vancouver, San Jose, Calgary and Denver. smile.gif

I was switching back and forth between the Boston-Montreal game (CBC) and Detroit-Nashville game (TSN) which were on at the same time. I happened to be watching the latter just as Steve Sullivan was setting up for his (unsuccessful) penalty shot. No real surprise, the much more experienced Red Wings came back and won the game. But of course there was a certain game in Vancouver that was of slightly more interest to me last night (see appropriate thread smile.gif )

Both the Philadelphia-New Jersey and the Ottawa-Toronto games are televised here starting within the hour. Good luck to the Flyers, although I will likely be watching more of the Sens-Leafs game.

Joe in Philly
At least you get to switch back and forth between games. ESPN is only showing one game tonight (10 pm ET). If it weren't for the fact that the Flyers are televised locally that would be the only game on.
Adam
Like puckman, I apologize for misplacing my earlier comments on the Wings and Predators. But, in my defense, I looked at the previous administration's postings regarding the Wings and Predators as well as the "vague and non-specific chatter" I received about the Wings and Predators prior to making my post. Let us all accept that mistakes were made--and mistakes will continue to be made--and move forward. wink

Marc wisely mentions the 4 pm (pdt) of some of those Eastern games; I am fast running out of reasons to claim the conference room with the TV on days ESPN airs hockey at that hour. I may have to resort to making-up appoitments with clients and meetings!

Frigin incredible game tonight. Khabi was on fire, as well as defense. Boyle trapping of the puck under him in the crease and subsequent "butt scoot" to get out was a huge heads up play to avoid a penalty shot. And the scoot was hot as hell! HA! This game would have been great for people to watch, but I guess the powers that be consider the 2nd game of importance rather than game 1, 3 or 4 to start this series, so only us locals get to see it. Congrats to the Flyers and Sens as well!

The way it was written up in the wire service article in today's paper, the Islanders outplayed the Lightning, especially the first two periods. You wouldn't know it from the score. There were a couple of quotes from Lightning personnel about how they have to play better.

Flyers beat the Devils! NJ is just not the same without Scott Stevens but still very tough.

Robert Esche was the no. 1 star. biggrin.gif
Kenny
Yes JIP, the Isles did play better offensively, especially with 30 SOG but Khabi and the defense really stood out. Even some of the Lightning players aknowledged they have to play better.

And Khabi was also the number 1 star of the game!
hockeyTom
Well since I can't see the game I am doing the next best thing...I am listening to the Bruins/Canadiens game on NHL Live. Pretty cool.
Adam
Raycroft--cute goalie alert!!--has been terrific again (I won't jinx him by mentioning the Anaheim Duck goalie who had such a great Stanley Cup playoff run last year) and is being matched save-for-save by Jose Theodore. Terrific to see...

~Adam
hockeyTom
I just heard, the Bruins are up 2 games to none now. Bergeron scores the o.t. goal.
Joe in Philly
I was half asleep at the time, but the game-winner looked like it should have been stopped by Theodore.

Meanwhile, the Flyers' Claude Lapointe has been suspended indefinitely. He's in the second stage of the league's substance abuse and behavioral health program. He missed over 30 games this year while being treated for depression.
phillyrunner
Just watched the Isles beat the Lightning. DiPietro really stepped up to give his team a chance. I was a bit surprised that Tortella pulled his goalie with 3 minutes left, New York did score the empty netter.

The refs did the right thing in over turning the goal that was clearly kicked in by a Tampa Bay player. This series should be exciting for a 1 -8 seeding as these teams seem to match up well. Goaltending as always will be the key.
Joe in Philly
The officials took way too long to make that decision. It was an obvious kick, and Darren Pang had the rule right away.

On the Flyers' Usenet newsgroup someone posted that ESPN reported that Scott Stevens is playing tonight for the Albany River Rats (their AHL team) in their season finale. It's not at ESPN.com but I found an article online from the Newark Star-Ledger saying that there are rumors that Stevens is in Albany. However, the live boxscore at the AHL's website does not have him listed.

Comcast Sportsnet is doing their 6:30 SportsNite show live from inside the arena, and fans are in the background behind the anchors cheering, and one is holding a sign: "Melrose is a moron." I'm in love! biggrin.gif

I think they took too long as well and Isles deserved the win, they outplayed my Lightning in every aspect of the game. Power play is just horrible! I hate it, but the Lightning seem to play better with their backs to the wall, but I sure hope they do not put my heart through that! rolleyes.gif
Joe in Philly
On the other hand, you now know for sure that your tickets are for game 5. wink

Flyers lead the series 2-0! WOO-HOO!

The officiating tonight was horrible. So inconsistent. They called a goaltender interference on the Flyers early on, but when Esche was hit a couple of times they let it go. Brodeur was swinging his stick a lot and tried to spear John LeClair and nothing was called. Finally, after letting EVERYTHING go throughout the third period, with the Devils pressing to tie the game THEY were called for a penalty with 38 seconds left. It was really a questionable call.

Ottawa and Toronto are now tied as well.
Marc
Congratulations to the Flyers tonight for their second win over the reigning Stanley Cup champs. I read that New Jersey has not come back from a 2-0 playoff deficit in the past ten years. I didn't see the game, just the highlights, but it looks like it ended with a scuffle involving Robert Esche, reminiscent of the way the Canucks-Flames game ended on Wednesday.

Elsewhere back east, New York's shutout win over Tampa Bay came as a surprise, although Toronto's win over Ottawa didn't. Veteran Gary Roberts scored twice. Although I would prefer to see the Senators take the series, I have a feeling it will be the Leafs winning in 6 or 7. And while I'm hesitant to make outright predictions, I think one very possible Stanley Cup scenario is a battle of the "senior citizens", ie Toronto vs Detroit.
hockeyTom
I for one am not that surprised about the situation the Devils are in. I just had a gut feeling that the Flyers would be the team to overthrow them this time. I don't forsee a sweep, but I still feel the Flyers will take them soon.
Adam

Oddly, I'm not finding Barry as annoying this Stanley Cup season. Perhaps it's because I know he probably won't be around next season (since ESPN will be cutting back on its hockey coverage...) or because he is so much less disturbing than Buccigross. But I do understand the sentiment...

I just checked the scoreboard and after 2 periods, its Montreal 3, Boston 1. Boy, the home teams are sure getting a very high percentage of wins here in round 1.
phillyrunner
Montreal did hold off Boston for the win at home.
I don't know if they will be able to win anymore against the Bruins unless Theodore continues to assist on the goal scoring (he had two tonight) tongue.gif

I agree that home ice advantage is particulary strong so far in the first round at 15 -3. That is normally not the case. Last year's conference quarterfinals ended up with a 24 -23 home advantage if you could call it that.

Well, My Man Gary Roberts had two goals for the Leafs on Sat. night, so I'm hoping this will be a good sign for the rest of the playoffs. Of course, as soon as I've typed this, I'll jinx it.

I watched some of the games over the weekend, and the games looked good. I noticed a LOT of tight calls in some of the games. I think Kerry Fraiser just wants all the TV time he can get.

I'm depressed the Flyers are up 2-0. *sigH* I'll hate to see them win.

Not me, I will be very pleased if the Flyers can do away with the Devils. biggrin.gif

I saw part of the Bruins-Canadiens game, since it was televised immediately before the Canucks-Flames game last night, and I'm glad that Montreal managed a win and avoided going down 3-0 in the series. But I was not at all impressed by Mike Ribeiro's antics in the last minute of the game...he collided with a Boston player and then proceeded to act like he was severely injured, lying on the ice flailing his arms with a look of anguish on his face. Seconds later, he was up on his feet and off to the bench, smirking and looking pretty proud of himself. He's not going to endear himself to the refs with that kind of nonsense.

Um, no. I do not think there is any team in the playoffs that could cause me to cheer for the Flyers. I think that even Detroit would preferable.

Trevor
Adam
Marc--Mike Ribeiro's antics could have been caused by having his wind knocked out of him in that hit. Once (years ago) I was in a friendly soccer game and collided-- hard --with an opponent & had the wind knocked out of me. For about five seconds, I lay on the ground in great pain, trying to get some air back into my lungs. Then I was fine & dandy. My first reaction to Ribeiro was the same as the one you state (and agree that game officials will not look kindly on his antics) but it could have been something more than acting antics.

Does anyone know how Scott Stevens is doing with his post-concussion recuperation? I know he has been skating with the Devils but haven't heard if he is to play this evening--and, boy, do the Devils need him.

~Adam
Jim Allen
Ribiero got crosschecked right in the chest, didn't he? That's got to hurt, but for a second I thought he was a South American footballer, someone who goes down like they've been hit with an axe when someone so much as breaths on them.

My lust object Martin Brodeur looks a little "off" this playoffs. But hey, he's playing against a Philly team and we all know what they're like. [makes choking sound]

smile.gif smile.gif
Seph
Marc, Ribiero's shoulder had popped out of its socket when he took an open-ice check. It doesn't do any real damage but it hurts like hell until someone pops it back in (which the Mtl trainer did on the ice), so I can see how he could be writhing in pain one minute, smiling the next, and not miss a shift. I still don't know why he was laughing at the Bruins' bench though - just trying to get the B's riled up and off their game, I guess. Could be a great strategy on his part, or a very, very bad one if he winds up in a morgue after Game 4.

For a guy who used to steal one game after another, José Theo has let in at least one soft goal per game (+1 SGPG) for about two weeks now; if he doesn't close that damn five-hole of his fast, the Habs are burnt toast.

Looking forward to tonight's Sens/Laffs game in Ottawa. Could Pat Quinn be any more of a BIG WHINER? Should be interesting to see how many Devils fans go to tonight's game dressed as empty seats. Flyers are looking good – JR, Eshe, Mark Rex, and this Pitkanin kid is excellent. He's a rookie, right?
