The Cincinnati Reds fired manager Bob Boone and GM Jim Bowden. Though they started out strong, the Reds have collapsed and fallen out of the playoff hunt. With a new ballpark and Griffey on the roster, there was much anticipation and (too?)many expectations. Maybe they are anticipating Pete Rose getting reinstated? wink tongue.gif

Buh-bye Boone and Bowden!

Wonder if this means there will be a "fire sale" in Cincinatti?

The Reds are batting .500 with this move.

Fire Bob Boone? Well, what did you expect from a man who was hired to be the manager because he would work cheaper than any other available candidate at the time? Y'know, there's an old cliche about getting what you pay for.

On the other hand, firing Jim Bowden? Stoopid stoopid stoopid. Bowden's a great GM. There's lots of great young talent on that team and Bowden did a fantastic job building a no-budget team. I can guarantee you that there are more than a handful of team owners out there thinking right now that maybe they should trade up. (Pittsburgh's Kevin McClatchy ought to be one.)

The Reds are struggling because their pitching stinks. Well, when you build a new park and you forget to put in an outfield, and you forget that you're supposed to elevate the pitcher's mound because this isn't slo-pitch softball: of course mediocre pitching is going to look frighteningly awful.

Here is hoping that Bowden finds another Major League job soon. Most of the Reds problems are not his fault, but a combination of Marge Schott being forced out and Griffey's repeated injuries. I bet he will be back in a GM title by next April.

meanwhile... the replacement as manager for the Reds is the manager of the Triple-A squad here in Lousville.

Now... while Tony LaRussa once managed at Louisville's farm club too. There was a long way before he landed a major league gig.

I'm not sure about this calling up the farm club for a manager thing.
