Josh Beckett seems to have brought his A game this year. He pitched a complete game shutout yesterday, and Juan Encanarcion hit his 2nd Grand Slam in 6 days as the Fish beat Washington two of three games this past weekend. Now it's time to sweep the Phillies!!

Is there a better one-two punch in the majors?? AJ Burnett also pitches a complete game win against the Phillies...

There seems to have been a game you forgot in between the Beckett game Sunday and the Burnett game last night. Or did you mean to say the Marlins have a one-three punch?

1-2 punch--what about Dontrelle Willis?
He pitched his second consecutive complete game shutout, giving up just three hits and striking out 7.

That would be a 1-3-4 punch, then. Al Leiter threw 114 pitches in 5 innings on Monday. If he's a 2 punch then Britney Spears is an extremely classy and talented young woman.

Dontrelle had not pitched when I posted yet....Can you imagine what this team could accomplish this season with three starters like that?? When you look at the team offensively, you have Lowell (a cutie), Cabrera, Encanarcion, and Delgado all with 30 HR power, and Castillo and Pierre at the top of the order, and you have a tough team to face... GO FISH!

Dontrelle pitched his first game on April 8, I thought. A complete game shutout. Anyways, the Marlins once again have an excellent lineup and could be the team to beat in the NL.
My Cards just don't have the pitching; they've gone backwards. Mulder sucks big time, Suppan is at best a number 4 pitcher, Morris's arm is shot, and Carpenter is iffy. That only leaves Jason Marquis, who can pitch and hit, but he can't win 90 games alone. I wish the Cards had gotten some real pitching, but no, they're content to live with last October's total humiliation, at least for now.

Josh Beckett pitched well enough to win, but the Marlin's bats went south, as Aaron Heilman pitched a one hitter for the Mets. Mike "I'm not gay" Piazza had a couple of big hits for New York....

AJ pitched yet another complete game, and the Marlins were able to take the final game against the Mets. I love where out pitching staff is this early. I just hope the bats can pick up steam.

The Marlins' bats are waking up! They pounded out 15 hits last night beating the Mets 9-2. LoDuca, Delgado, Pierre, Cabrera & Encarnacion all continue to hit the ball, and even Castillo is showing signs of coming out of his slump. Beckett is now 3-1 w/ an ERA of 1.0. Willis is 3-0 with an ERA of 1.13....
The Marlins are currently 9-6 and tied for first with Washington.

Big win last night in Atlanta! Leiter finally pitched a good game, which is great since he's been the only weak link on the starting staff. The bats were huge last night as well. Delgado and Cabrera each hit a HR and drove in 4.
On the darker side, the stadium is on life support in the senate at the moment, which does not look good for team staying in South Florida. That would really stink.

The bats have finally come alive as the Fish take two of three from the Dodgers. But the biggest news was Mike Lowell getting hit in that glorious face of his by a pop fly he lost in the sun. Here's hoping there's no permanant damage!

Lowell was very fortunate. The diagnosis is a "facial contusion;" it could easily have been a broken cheekbone or fractured orbital socket.

Also, Dontrelle is now 8-1, with the second lowest ERA in either league, after Clemens's. He's pitching even better than he did in his rookie year. His WHIP is a miniscule 0.95, and batters are only hitting .210 against him.

Hey Spartan...I'm new to this board. It's almost painful watching this team struggle and waste some excellent starting pitching (for the most part). To be 2nd in batting average and near the bottom in run production is frustrating. Fortunately they haven't fallen too far out of contention yet. In years past, Atlanta would be running away with the division. WSH and PHL are hot now, but I don't think either of them will last. We've got to find some way to get Pierre and Lowell going. Seems like they're rocks sinking the boat right now.

Just as you're ready to pull you hair out due to frustration, quietly this club has won 3 of 4 and 4 of 6 and are starting to score some runs. And Mike Lowell is starting to show some life. Another solid if unspectacular showing by Willis. This team is keeping close and should make everyone else in the division very nervous when things finally come together completely.

Yea, Nice win last night, and antoher solid performance by Dontrelle, who also picked up a couple of more hits. I'm hearing rumours, tho, that the Marlins may try to pick up Lou Pinella if he should suddenly become available in Tampa...Wouldn't mind seeing that happen.

Could/should the Marlins get rid of McKeon? Read this in my paper this morning:
QUOTE
With the Marlins continuing to run in place, club sources indicate that the idea of firing manager Jack McKeon has at least been discussed. And it's not only a few players who are unhappy with his methods. A small group in the front office has grown weary with the periodic battles over roster help and the manager's blunt criticism of anything or anyone that doesn't meet his standards.
That doesn't mean that McKeon, 74, is in trouble, though. Only one manager in the last quarter century, Baltimore's Joe Altobelli, has been fired within 2 years of winning the World Series.
Said one National League club official: \"The problem with firing Jack is that Jack has become bigger than the team. He has become the Marlins. On a national level, that's what you hear about... He's become so beloved, I don't know if the Marlins have the guts to fire him.\"

I'm not willing to rule out any option. Maybe firing McKeon is the answer, I don't know. I'm not that convinced about Piniella...they seem to be very similar. Both old school, surly at times. Have had problems getting along with players at times (plus Lou still has a job, and I can't remember anyone leaving one team and going to another during the same season). Mark Wiley has done a great job with the rotation, and the recent gaffes notwithstanding, the bullpen has actually been pretty solid. So, maybe he deserves the shot at running the show. If you're going to fire McKeon, then Robinson must go also. I don't have the answers, but I know something has to be done. This team has too many very good parts to be playing so lousy. Anything short of the playoffs is a miserable failure.

There ya go... three straight in Tampa. Cap it off with an EXCELLENT performance on the mound by AJ today. He was supposed to have left me tickets for today (it wasn't his fault though I didn't get them, grrr...) so I was glad he didn't have an extraordinary showing, but was glad he threw so well. He just had everything going for him. He wasn't trying to blow 'em by everyone, and I think it helped him not putting all he had on ever fastball he threw. That helped him still hit the mid-90s in the 9th. Well, that and the fact that he only faced 30 batters. I think I'll become a Marlins' fan every fifth day.
Of course, you kinda have to be disapointed about your offense today, but McClung did well for my Rays. Take a couple from the Braves this week and go from there. I think y'all will be okay.

Jun 26 2005, 11:25 PM
AJ was outstanding today. Good thing, since the offense was anemic. But, a sweep is a sweep is a sweep! 4 at home vs. Atlanta, and no Smoltz to face. Fish need to keep the streak going. Starting pitching remains excellent. Bullpen was good this weekend. And Juan Pierre is starting to stir. Now if we can just get Mike Lowell going, this team could really start to make a move upward in the standings. (Watch, just as I'm getting optimistic...tomorrow they'll be shut out and strand 12 runners on base. Boy, you gotta love baseball!)
