Well, the Brewers stand with the identical record at this point last season (when they finally reached the milestone of a .500 record for the year) -- and things are looking up (maybe).

Ended a slide yesterday with a nice win in AZ -- now out to SF and then a good stretch against NL Central teams.

The bad news: closer Derrick Turnbow has lost his mojo.

The good news: starters Okha and Sheets should be back soon. The guys who replaced them in the rotation have been something like 5-16 -- had they even gone .500 the team would be sitting pretty.

Rookie of the Year candidate Prince Fielder is producing as expected. Bill Hall is a indispensable utility infielder. Jeff Cirillo has been a great clutch hitter.

The big dilemna is whether to trade Carlos Lee before 7/31 - -he wants to stay (I want him to stay) -- but the club probably can't afford the $$$ to keep him after this season.

WILD CARD OR BUST!

(As in seasons past, I may be the only one contributing to the thread, but here goes wink )

We'll just have to prove you wrong then, won't we? wink

If Carlos Lee really wants to stay, how much money is he willing to give up in order to stay? And how much are the Brewers willing to spend to try and keep him?

Despite a god-awful week on the road, the team's still only 5 games behind the Reds in the WC race -- and they get to play them 3 more times next weekend in M'waukee. So chances are they'll hang onto Lee for the rest of the season.

Okha had two fine starts (including yesterday's win). Ben Sheets may get a start on Tuesday against Pittsburgh. And finally someone was able to get a save -- Kolb, although it was a little shakey in the 9th. Turnbow had blown 4 straight.

So the big news coming out of M'waukee is that the Chorizo has been added to the line-up in the Sausage Race -- just in time for Saturday's hispanic day at Miller Park when the Brewers become the "Cerveceros". They're playing the "Rojos." ¡Andale! (still no word on what Chorizo will wear -- that will be revealed by the team and Klement's Sausage Company manana).

Actually bigger news was that Ben Sheets had a fine outing pitching for the first time since April -- 1 run over 7 innings. But got no run support and the bullpen once again stunk.

And the Brewers did make a trade -- but not Carlos Lee. Instead, due to the decimated infield (JJ Hardy, Rickie Weeks and Corey Koskie all injured) they picked up utility man Tony Graffanino.

But when are they going to add a tofu dog for our vegetarian friends?? wink

Ah -- but it could be the current hot dog in the race is made of tofu. Maybe the Brewers made like Apu -- he sells only tofu dogs on the rollers at the Kwickie Mart. Apu: "And only thrice the fat of a normal hot dog. I made the switch and nobody noticed." tongue.gif

Carlos Lee traded to Texas...the Brewers get reliever Francisco Cordero and outfielders Kevin Mench (a HUGE Eagles fan, Bucky wink )and Laynce Nix.

It became clear last week that Lee was going to try the free agent market at the end of the season and that the Brewers were sliding out the WC race -- so dealing him was a good idea. Whether the players they got in return will pan out -- time will tell. The last couple trades they've made -- 1) Spivey for Okha and 2) Sexton for all those Brewerbacks a few seasons back -- worked out quite well.

As for Mench -- an Iggles fan, huh? Well he's gonna have to work extra hard for some bucky love! smile.gif

Did I hear this correctly??? MLB has ordered the Brewers to keep the chorizo out of the sausage races for the remainder of the season because it's an unauthorized mascot??? The powers that be failed to prevent the use of steroids or human growth hormones by its players (with the assistance of the players' union) but, by God, they won't allow an unauthorized mascot to join a sausage race.

?????

And I have to wonder what "mascot rules and regulations" there are to determine what is authorized and unauthorized???

Maybe this mascot tested positive for something, I don't know....anyone got a photo of it?

It's true, and it's asinine:

Last week, the Milwaukee Brewers introduced a new member of their famed sausage race with much fanfare.

Now comes word that Chorizo is heading back into the freezer ... at least for a little bit.

According to a report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the new mascot did not go through Major League Baseball's approval process with regard to new characters and promotions.

MLB spokesperson Susan Goodenow told the newspaper baseball wants to be sure that fans tie into new characters or promotions from a marketing and licensing standpoint. She also said the process would take a number of months, which presumably means that Chorizo could be called up in time for Opening Day 2007.

MLB did approve a one-time appearance for Chorizo, who raced against the Hot Dog, Bratwurst and Italian and Polish sausages as part of the Brewers' special Cerveceros Day celebration on July 29. In his lone race of the 2006 season, Chorizo finished a disappointing third.

The Brewers tried to put a humorous spin on the promotion demotion, saying they were sending the Chorizo down to the minors for more \"seasoning.\"
