The Rangers have fired (the great) Bryan Trottier--considering their payroll & record (in 11th place in the Eastern Conference) you ust know that something had to give. This does give Scotty Bowman yet another chance to say "thanks...I'll stay retired" when a desperate GM calls.
I wonder if LA King coach Andy Murray is sleeping easy these days??

This planet is running out of hockey coaches. Maybe Glen Sather will watch his Rangers lose from behind the bench for the rest of the season? (And do I dare mention Ted Nolan's name again?)

I think Trottier's dismissal brings the total for the season to date to at least seven or eight coaches fired...must be some kind of new record, isn't it?

I don't follow hockey very closely, but it does seem as if coaches get fired much more frequently. And they recycle fired coaches more frequently as well. There must be a lesson in there somewhere.

I would say one of the lessons for the Rangers should be quit dumping so damn much money into a medicore team!

Chuck, this should help you.
http://espn.go.com/nhl/coachingchanges02.htmland, I must post a really funny e-mail from my seat mate:
Calgary: lost to the Caps, fired their coach
Colorado: tied the Caps, fired their coach
Columbus: tied the Caps, fired their coach
Rangers: lost to the Caps, fired their coach
See, Jagr IS a coach-killer, just OTHER team's coaches.

It mentions in "Jock Talk" that the firing was puzzling because the Rangers won 5 of 6--but actually, that was a while back. Since that burst they lost two games to the lowly Thrashers as well as the Caps game Trevor mentioned.
I saw a graphic on ESPN last night showing the won/lost percentage for the last 5 or 6 coaches hired by Glen Sather (in NY and Edmonton)--all had losing records.

With just 9 games left in the regular season, the Bruins have
canned coach Robbie Ftorek. Is there any remaining doubt that this team will crash and burn in the first round of the playoffs - again?

Wow, unbelievable!! Buts the Bruins really have had a horrid year, cept for the first part, maybe quarter. Nope, I think they will be toast in the first round also.

The timing of this firing comes as more a surprise than the fact he was actually let go. As it stands, the Bruins are playoff-bound, in part because of Ftorek. A change in coach at this time--even to a former King coach wink --is beyond questionable.

On the other hand, in 2000 the Devils fired a coach with 8 games left in the regular season and then won the Cup.
The coach the Devils fired? Robbie Ftorek.
Makes you think he should make himself scarce this time of year, eh? wink

I remain baffled by the timing of this firing. If it had happened three weeks ago--when the Bruins were losing consistently--it would have made some sense. But the team--under Ftorek--had seemed to get back on track & was trending in the right direction heading to the playoffs. I don't think the firing had anything to do with what was happening on the ice but was, instead, somehow a personality conflict between Ftorek and O'Connell.
